On Arabs and Arab States

On Arabs and Arab States

Agha H Amin

The first Arab officer that I saw was in 1981 while a cadet at the Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul. This was Sergeant Tamimi a PLO officer and a final term cadet. He seemed to be an interesting personality.

In the basic course a Jordanian was with us at the Armour School Nowshera in January-June 1984.

He seemed truly pathetic.Mentally slow, physically bulky and academically nil.

I then saw more Arab officers while serving as a GSO 3 Research Trial and Publications at Armour Schoool Nowshera from October 1990 till January 1991 and as an Instructor at the Tactical Wing of the same school from January 1991 till January 1992.These included Iraqis,Jordanians.

These officers had little or no initiative sign of a regime that dislikes officers with initiative.

My friend Colonel Munawar Hussain who served as armour advisor with the Iraqi Army in 1982-85 states that some Iraqis that he saw as tank squadron commanders were very good but many died in the war.

His opinion about the extreme paranoia of Saddam Hussain was poor.He was asked many times by Iraqis " Major Munawar Hussain are you a Shia" because of Hussain in the end.Munawar retorted " Is Saddam Hussain a Shia " and his Iraqi friends turned red in the face and dumb struck.

An officer who was part of Pakistani tank brigade in first Gulf war described Saudi border posts opposite Iraq as ready to bolt away with all supplies packed in a truck once the first Iraqi shot was fired.

My net impression about Arabs militarily was that no Arab regime really wanted to beat Israel. They see Israel secretly as a blessing , in diverting the Arab masses attention away from real problems of life in Arab states.

With so much oil , manpower and land the Arabs stand out as a classic example of political failure. They have millions to gamble and lose in one night at a Monaco Cassino , millions to spend on East European prostitutes imported by plane loads to Dubai and Sharjah but not thousands to improve their army.Yet they blame the USA,Israel and even Allah for all their woes.Pathetic par excellence !

A distant relative Hafeezullah Niazi taunted his Arab Airforce students in Pakistan stating " you are shameless guys , even if you all urinate , you can drown Israel, but you are hopeless".

The behaviour of many Palestenian and Arab students in Pakistan was shocking. As students they were having the best alchohol.Engaging highly paid call girls ?

Most Pakistani workers who worked in Arab states described their Arab masters as worse than Jews, rude, unjust in paying and highly arrogant.

A distant relative of mine died crashed in a Syrian Mig fighter near Golan Heights in 1973.Another relative died fighting the Saudi Forces in the failed 1979 coup inside Kaba.

In retrospect this was a waste of precious human lives fighting for ignorant people lost in debauchery and vice.

The Turks once took pride in secularism but now cold shouldered by the West have re-discovered Islam. The major reason has been their non admission to EU.

The real issue now is about leadership in Islamic world and both Iran and Turkey want to be so.

Iranians are a proud race. They have executed more Muslim Baloch and Kurds in last 30 years than all Muslims killed by Israel. They too eye leadership of the Muslim world .Thus their aid to Sudan,Hamas and some anti US factions in Afghanistan.

All said and done the present crisis in the world is because of pathetic strategic incompetence of US viz :---

Failure to decide the Iraq issue in first Gulf war.

Failure to aid the Iranian Baloch in 1980-1990.

Failure to have a decisive and clear cut strategy in Afghanistan and Pakistan after 9/11.

All this has led to the strategic initiative passing to the anti US forces and today Russia,Iran and China are well poised to counter any US move in Central Asia and Afghanistan.

The conflict as I see is not wholly religious and has many shades of ethnicity, sect, ego and illusions.
