Rachel Corrie and Furkan Dogan: Murdered American Heroes

Posted: 11 Jun 2010 10:44 AM PDT

In the past seven years, two Americans were unjustly, maliciously and violently killed by the Israel "Defense" Forces (IDF). Both had unwittingly given their lives for Gaza, and in the aftermath of their murders, their government forsook them.

Their names were oft-repeated—if not by follow citizens, then by citizens of the world—as events surrounding Israel's horrific assault on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla were discussed. These two young and brave individuals were Rachel Corrie and Furkan Dogan.

Gulf Oil Spill "Could Go on Years and Years" ...

Posted: 11 Jun 2010 10:04 AM PDT

According to Kutcherov, a leading specialist in the theory of abiogenic deep origin of petroleum, "What BP drilled into was what we call a 'migration channel,' a deep fault on which hydrocarbons generated in the depth of our planet migrate to the crust and are accumulated in rocks, something like Ghawar in Saudi Arabia."[2] Ghawar, the world's most prolific oilfield has been producing millions of barrels daily for almost 70 years with no end in sight. According to the abiotic science, Ghawar like all elephant and giant oil and gas deposits all over the world, is located on a migration channel similar to that in the oil-rich Gulf of Mexico.

Military Watershed: Longest War In U.S. And Afghan History

Posted: 11 Jun 2010 09:50 AM PDT

This week news about the U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organization armed conflict in Afghanistan, the largest and longest-running war in the world, has begun to penetrate the wall of triumphalism and complacency erected by Washington during the past year's unparalleled military escalation in the South Asian nation.

Sweden's New Masculinity

Mikael Karlsson owns a snowmobile, two hunting dogs and five guns. In his spare time, this soldier-turned-game warden shoots moose and trades potty-training tips with other fathers. Cradling 2-month-old Siri in his arms, he can't imagine not taking baby leave. "Everyone does."

From trendy central Stockholm to this village in the rugged forest south of the Arctic Circle, 85 percent of Swedish fathers take parental leave. Those who don't face questions from family, friends and colleagues. As other countries still tinker with maternity leave and women's rights, Sweden may be a glimpse of the future.

Ireland's Bloody Sunday: Why the Israeli State Must Not be Allowed to Hold its Own Inquiry into Bloody Monday

Posted: 11 Jun 2010 09:27 AM PDT

The British inquiry into Bloody Sunday should serve as a salutary lesson as to why such probes controlled by the state are inadequate to establish truth and justice. The lesson is particularly apposite in the light of events of Bloody Monday on 31 May, 2010, when Israeli commandos opened fire on humanitarian aid workers onboard the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, killing at least nine civilians and wounding several dozen.

Murders at Guantánamo: The Cover-Up Continues

Posted: 11 Jun 2010 04:15 AM PDT

Sometimes the truth is so sickening that no one in a position of authority — senior government officials, lawmakers, the mainstream media — wants to go anywhere near it.

This appears to be the case with the deaths of three men at Guantánamo on June 9, 2006. According to the official version of events, Salah Ahmed al-Salami (also identified as Ali Abdullah Ahmed), a 37-year old Yemeni, Mani Shaman al-Utaybi, a 30-year old Saudi, and Yasser Talal al-Zahrani, a Saudi who was just 17 when he was seized in Afghanistan, died by hanging themselves, in what Guantánamo's then-Commander, Rear Adm. Harry Harris, described as an act of "asymmetric warfare."

Some Big Lies of Science

Posted: 11 Jun 2010 03:29 AM PDT

The maintenance of the hierarchical structures that control our lives depends on Pinter's "vast tapestry of lies upon which we feed." Therefore the main institutions that embed us into the hierarchy, such as schools, universities, and mass media and entertainment corporations, have a primary function to create and maintain this tapestry. This includes establishment scientists and all service intellectuals in charge of "interpreting" reality.

Friday: 2 US Soldiers, 16 Iraqis Killed; 39 Iraqis Wounded

Posted: 11 Jun 2010 03:26 AM PDT

Margaret Griffis

Two U.S. soldiers were killed and six were wounded during a suicide car bombing near the Iranian border. At least 16 Iraqis were killed and 39 more were wounded there and in other attacks across the country. Several attacks on U.S. targets have occurred in recent days.

A suicide car bomber in Jalawla killed two U.S. soldiers and wounded about six more. As many as eight Iraqis were killed and 24 more were wounded. According to witnesses, the Americans appeared to be searching for weapons when the suicide bomber drove up to their convoy in a taxi. A policeman and a woman were among the dead. Conflicting figures are common after bombings, especially those that result in U.S. troops sealing off the areas around attacks.

Hypocrisy Reigns. "The World has been taken over by Lying, Hypocritical, Mass-murdering Madmen"

Posted: 11 Jun 2010 01:41 AM PDT

Things internationally are so dispiriting there's nothing left to do but fantasize. I picture Turkey, as a member of NATO, demanding that the alliance come to its defense after being attacked by Israel. Under Article 5 of the NATO charter an armed attack on one member is deemed to constitute an armed attack on all members. That is the ostensible reason NATO is fighting in Afghanistan — the attack against the United States on September 11, 2001 is regarded as an attack on all NATO members (disregarding the awkward fact that Afghanistan as a country had nothing to do with the attack). The Israeli attack on a Turkish-flagged ship, operated by a Turkish humanitarian organization, killing nine Turkish nationals and wounding many more can certainly constitute an attack upon a NATO member.

Afghanistan: Funding Both Sides

Posted: 11 Jun 2010 01:26 AM PDT

War junkies popped their champagne corks on 7 June to celebrate the 104th month of US military engagement in Afghanistan, America's longest war in history (Vietnam lasted 103 months). Presumably they toasted the five NATO soldiers killed on 6 June. Troop deaths have skyrocketed this year and NATO forces are continuing to "mow the grass", killing dozens of "Taliban" every day, and lots of civilians, though no one seems to know just how many of each or how to tell the difference. In any case, what's the point of questioning numbers provided by those doing the killing?

War, Politics and the Economic Crisis: Why We Barely Know What's Going On

Defending America covertly has become an ongoing theme for one more TV series. Salute the flag and praise NBC (GE) for its latest effort to persuade the population to accept the kind of secret operations that now drive the war in Afghanistan. Their latest show is called "Covert Affairs" and airs on the patriotically named USA Network.

UN "Green Light" for a Pre-emptive US-Israel Attack on Iran? Security Council Resolution Transforms Iran into a "Sitting Duck"

Posted: 11 Jun 2010 01:15 AM PDT

The UN Security Council voted on June 9 the imposition of a fourth round of sweeping sanctions against The Islamic Republic of Iran, which include an expanded arms embargo as well "tougher financial controls".

In a bitter irony, this resolution was passed within days of the United Nations Security Council's outright refusal to adopt a motion condemning Israel for its attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla in international waters.

9/11: The Great Nose In -- Nose Out Hoax

Proving, conclusively, who was responsible for the video fakery. We know that the 9/11 Commission lied. Telling more lies, about what happened on that terrible day is an insult to the memories of those who died, and to those who want to see the true perpetrators of those dreadful crimes brought to justice.

Does Obama Really Know or Care About Who Is at Guantánamo?

Posted: 10 Jun 2010 11:38 PM PDT

The recently released Final Report of President Obama's Guantánamo Review Task Force (PDF) was supposed to provide a cogent and definitive analysis of the status of the remaining 181 prisoners, given that it took eleven months to complete, and involved "more than 60 career professionals, including intelligence analysts, law enforcement agents, and attorneys, drawn from the Department of Justice, Department of Defense, Department of State, Department of Homeland Security, Central Intelligence Agency, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and other agencies within the intelligence community."

Obama, the ADC and the Gaza Freedom Flotilla

Posted: 10 Jun 2010 08:51 PM PDT

Imagine the media coverage that would have awaited us in our local and national newspapers, our radio, facebook, twitter and television news alerts and special bulletins had Iran or another 'enemy' nation killed –and in some cases executed – 9 or more Israeli or American Jewish peace activists aboard a Turkish vessel (and therefore a NATO partner). What if that vessel were leading a convoy of 700 unarmed activists aboard ships filled with humanitarian aid to a million and a half Jewish political prisoners held hostage by that nation on spurious and sinister claims of 'national security'?

The Outrage at Helen Thomas

Posted: 10 Jun 2010 08:48 PM PDT

Whenever Israel commits yet another atrocity, its defenders are quick to redirect public attention away from the grisly crime scene.

Currently, there are headlines about allegedly anti-Semitic comments made by senior White House correspondent Helen Thomas. Pundits across the land evince outrage at her off-the-cuff 25-second statement made to a man who appears to be holding a camera right in her face.

€uro: the worst case scenario

Posted: 10 Jun 2010 07:44 PM PDT

The financial attack launched against Greece because of its sovereign debt and its potential insolvency soon proved to be an offensive against the Euro and to have only a distant relationship with the flaws and structural deficits of the Greek economy itself. These 'vices', incidentally, are largely shared by the bulk of post-industrial countries which have acquired the bad habit of living beyond their means and on credit, hence the soaring quantum of debt, a bubble (as any other) doomed to burst.

Strengthening NAFTA Ties and the Push Towards a Common Security Front

Posted: 10 Jun 2010 03:40 AM PDT

As a result of the demise of the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) of North America, the NAFTA trilateral relationship has suffered. This has forced many of the SPP's objectives to be funneled through various bilateral initiatives.

Mexico's drug war is also serving as a catalyst for more North American cooperation and integration in areas of border security, law enforcement and the military. Canada is being encouraged to further engage and commit itself alongside the U.S. in helping Mexico.

Drones: Backfiring on U.S. Strategy

Posted: 10 Jun 2010 03:00 AM PDT

Predator drones are equipped with large and powerful cameras that beam real-time images to their operators. Last February, a Predator crew operating out of Creech Air Force Base, Nevada, asked for an air strike against three vehicles with males supposed to be insurgents. An OH-58D Kiowa helicopter fired Hellfire missiles and rockets which destroyed the three vehicles. Instead of insurgents, 23 innocent men, women and children were killed and 12 more were seriously injured.

Public campaign: Lift siege on Gaza

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 06:26 PM PDT

One year after Operation Cast Lead, B'Tselem is today (27 December) launching a public campaign demanding that Israel lift its siege on the Gaza Strip. This is necessary in order to rehabilitate the Gaza Strip from the destruction wrought by the hostilities. As part of the campaign, the organization is releasing a new animated short film, by Alon Simone. The film shows how goods that are forbidden entry into Gaza from Israel enter from Egypt through tunnels, a process that enriches Hamas, which collects taxes on the goods. Through the film, BTselem hopes to demonstrate the absurdity of the Israeli siege policy: while seeking to topple the Hamas government, Israel is gravely harming Gazas million and a half residents, and is achieving the opposite outcome.
