The Turkish president has said that Israel's military raid on civilian aid ships bound for the Gaza Strip has caused "irreparable" damage to his country's relations with Israel, and will "never" be forgiven.

US detention centres face legal limbo

When undocumented workers are caught they get sent to a detention facility run by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). There are dozens of detention facilities across the US and some immigrants are even kept in actual prisons with convicted criminals. There have been accusations of mistreatment, lack of medical care, and lack of attorney access at some of these detention facilities. The ACLU successfully sued the ICE to have undocumented families removed from one of the detention facilities because of the conditions. Now, the ACLU is calling for federal oversight for the detention centres to ensure that there are standards in place. Al Jazeera's Mike Kirsch reports.

AL urges UNSC action against Israel

The Arab League (AL) has agreed to ask the UN Security Council to take action to end Israel's blockade on Gaza, a few days after an Israeli attack on an aid convoy.

AL Secretary General Amr Moussa told reporters after an emergency ministerial meeting in Cairo that the Arab states decided to work actively to end Israel's "illegal siege," Reuters reported.

Under U.S. pressure, Netanyahu may ease Gaza siege

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is willing to consider easing the naval blockade on the Gaza Strip, as well as possible creative solutions for monitoring the goods that are allowed to enter the Hamas-ruled territory.

According to Netanyahu, the siege should focus on preventing the smuggling of rockets and weapons in order to avoid what he termed an "Iranian port in Gaza" in a speech he gave in Canada on Monday.

Scientists launch mock Mars mission

An international team of researchers has launched a mock mission to Mars that will keep them locked in a capsule of windowless modules for 520 days - the amount of time required for a return trip to the Red Planet.

The six-member, all male crew of three Russians, a Frenchman, an Italian-Colombian and a Chinese, began the simulation on Thursday at a space centre in the Russian capital, Moscow.

Thousands of mourners flocked on Thursday to a funeral for the Turkish activists killed during an Israeli raid on an aid flotilla, as President Abdullah Gul told an outraged nation that ties with Israel would never be the same again.

Coffins of most of those killed, draped in Turkish and Palestinian flags, were brought to Istanbul's Fatih Mosque for the service before the bodies were taken to their home towns for burial.

"News Alert-Israeli Ambassador's comments prove attack on ship was premeditated: Oren says Marmara was 'too large to stop by nonviolent means'" In other words, Israel planned to take this ship out, and they planned to take it out violently, putting the lie to IDF assertions that the deaths were only caused when the soldiers had to defend themselves.

In the online public relations arena, it appears that the Israel Defense Forces is winning the battle, at least for now. Three of the four most viewed clips on the popular video website YouTube in recent days were posted by the IDF Spokesperson's Unit.

The videos were posted after a clash between Israeli navy commandos and activists aboard a boat carrying aid and heading toward blockaded Gaza resulted in 9 deaths and dozens of injuries early Monday morning.

Israel rejects int'l probe into raid as new Gaza Flotilla about to sail

Nine activists killed during the Israeli storming of a Gaza aid flotilla have been buried in Istanbul. All but one were Turkish, the other was a US national of Turkish origin. Their bodies arrived in Turkey earlier on Thursday alongside hundreds of detainees deported by Tel Aviv. Israel decided to send home some 700 activists from various countries as international condemnation grew over its troops' actions.

A Frenchman, an Italian, a Chinese and three Russians, all with higher technical education, will spend 520 days in a simulated space module in the Institute of Medical and Biological Studies. The experiment aims to examine how those men will cope both physically and psychologically.
