Top 100 Most Subscribed UK Youtubers: August 2011

I figured it was about time for a new Top 100 Most Subscribed UK Youtubers list because the old one was a bit out of date. Had to update it to reflect Charlie McDonnell's getting his one millionth subscriber and show the changes that have occurred since last October.

As always there is a lot of movement on the chart with some moving up and others dropping off to be replaced by newer channels. I always point out that you need to look beyond the Top 10 and scour the choices offered by those in the middle and the new ones debuting towards the bottom. It is getting more difficult to make the top 100 in the United Kingdom as you need at least 80K subs when just last year you could be on the list with only 40K.

Here is the list of those UK YouTube channels with the highest number of subscribers. Leading the way is Charlie McDonnell with his charlieissocoollike of course. Actually, the first 4 are all on the worldwide Top 100 Most Subscribed List.

1. charlieissocoollike - Charlie McDonnell broke the one million subscriber mark recently and he'll probably add more because of his show at VidCon 2011 (he dropped his trousers if you haven't seen it) and Charlie has about a 340K lead on the next highest Youtube channel in the UK. Charlie has another new channel that's is getting lots of subs called "charlieissoboredlike" which currently sits at number 70 on the list and will probably be much higher by the time this list next gets updated.

2. bubzbeauty - Lindy's main channel is growing by leaps and bounds. She added about 300K new subs since this list was last updated and she's the 2nd most subbed UK youtuber and, of course, also the most followed makeup guru. She just zipped past 300K subs on her 2nd channel called bubbiosity where she does random skits and vlogs.

3. BlueXephos - BlueXephos is new to the Top 10 and the channel is by Lewis (Xephos) and Simon (Honeydew). They take you through several different video games step by step with a bit of humour, so they have been garnering massive subs. Do you think they might pose a threat to Charlie McDonnell's top status? Not yet I think, but if they keep getting numbers like they have they might just be the ones to knock him out as the most subbed in the UK.

4. UKFDubstep - Wall to wall dubstep. In case you don't know what "dubstep" is (how long have you been under that rock?) it is a genre of electronic dance music that started around the area of south London. This channel had a mere 123,337 subscribers last October and now UKFDubstep's sub base has exploded growing 5 times as large to 639K.

5. TopGear - Cars, motorcycles and all things mechanical is what you will find on TopGear channel. They've grown their subscriber list from 373K to 575K although they've slipped from 4th most UK subbed to 5th (still not too shabby). You can also find more about them at their website topgear.com/uk/.

6. simonscat - I love Simon's Cat! It's simple animation (you can do it too). Just get a Youtube channel and upload funny animation and you will be surprised at the response. The channel has added about 200,000 new subscribers since Oct 2010 and now sits at 478K and will likely hit 500,000 subscribers shortly.

7. panacea81 is Lauren Luke who remains one of the top UK make-up gurus. Check out her book called Lauren Luke and her personal blog: About Lauren Luke.

8. TotalHalibut - was sitting in 16th spot last October but increased their base from 148,000 to 412K (passing Nerimon in the process). The channel does various games with commentary by the one and only Total Biscuit aka John Bain.

9. nerimon - Mr Alex Day's vlog where he gets to ramble on about his life. Humourous and sometimes enlightening. Alex and Charlie McDonnell are partners in crime on several projects as well as a another channel.

10. BBCWorldwide - From the national television we have BBCWorldwide which currently has over 5,000 videos uploaded from different TV shows. Everything from Fawlty Towers to dinosaurs, you will find great fare on this channel.

That's the Top 10 for the United Kingdom, but there are a LOT of other equally good or better channels the further down the list.

Biggest moves up the list: UKFDrumand Bass jumped 35 spots almost to the Top 10 by adding over 250K new subscribers since last October. Impressive numbers. The largest jump up the list was by glyphmedia who went from number 98 on the last list to number 35 on this one. They increased their sub base by 113,000.

Biggest moves down the list: Minus 50 spots for BritainsSoTalented! WTH happened there? I guess XFactor and the other shows have swamped the viewer base for this channel and they actually lost 800 subscribers since Oct 2010. Another big drop was TheRealParis who slipped from 52 to 94th position and looks to be heading off the list shortly. A couple of the British girls I like watching are dropping in the ranks too. mememolly must be too busy working with RocketBoom and her personal channel dropped 31 spots. Also, Katers17 is vlogging daily on her 2nd channel (katersoneseven) and her first channel has slipped a bit losing 19 positions and sitting at number 76 overall.

All together there are about thirty new additions to the Top 100 Youtubers (UK Edition) which should keep you busy for a while trying to check them all out. They are spread out pretty fairly throughout the list with 11 new channels listed from 76-100. There are some channels that are not "new" but I have seen listed in other countries. I don't like seeing it when channels try to game the system by switching their country of origin to get awards and to try to get noticed in other areas. But most are just new channels. Check them out and report back. Let me know if you find any really good channels because I want to try to promote channels with smaller subscriber bases.

That is the list for the United Kingdom as of August, 2011. I'll make sure I get it updated each month and posted on Bradshaw's Blog. I will try to get this list updated month to month.

When I last did this list in October 2010, it took 44K subscribers to break into the Top 100 and and as you can see that number has jumped up to almost 80,000 before you are in the Top 100 Most Subscribed Youtubers List. Charlie McDonnell has the only UK channel with more than one million subscribers (there are about 43 Youtube channels worldwide with at least 1,000,000 subs) but I think there are some in the UK who are hot on charlieissocoollike's heels and will break that number shortly.

Charlie McDonnell Has A Big Coming Out Video: We Suspected As much

If you have been watching Charlie McDonnell's charlieissocoollike channel you have probably thought that something was a little "off" about Charlie through the years and in this video he reveals the truth of the matter.



So, with the help of robotics technician Artie Blotch (as well as general lab assistant Alex Day) we find out that yes, Charlie is in fact a fabricated life form. He is a robot. It is as we all suspected from day one, what with all of those odd jump cuts (explained as being required due to overheating of the Charliebot). Now how do you explain Nerimon?

TheHumanBanana Answers 100 Questions In Under 2 Minutes

I like this one. I found it attached to the latest video by MysteryGuitarMan and thought I would check it out based on the title. That's one of the best ways to find interesting stuff on Youtube - click on videos that look interesting or have odd titles. It is from TheHumanBanana, a youtuber I hadn't seen before. Take a look:



Apparently, TheHumanBanana is a banana (duh) and he simply answers 100 questions as quickly as possible. He got his inspration from Charlie McDonnell (charlieissocoollike) who did his video last April. Charlie actually kicked some butt in his video, answering 148 questions in two minutes, 25 seconds.



But, as Charlie says in the video, he got the video idea from John Green of the vlogbrothers who made a video answering 100 questions as follows:

What's This?! Charlie McDonnell Chopped Off His Red Hair?

Yes, Charlie McDonnell has let down the vast female membership of his viewing audience by losing the red mop top he has had for about 10 months now. He originally dyed it red on a dare and has been stuck with the Weasley-esque hairdo ever since, but as he mentions, he had enough of the jokes about "Ron Weasley Is So Cool Like" and "Charlie Weasley" so after growing it out he's finally chopped it off.



As well, Charlie is all wide-angle with his new camera. It's a Canon 60D with "a big lens thing and a road video mike" for about 2 thousand pounds (that's about $3100 U.S. dollars - quite a sum) but you can see that the picture is vastly improved on his old Sony HD SR10.

Must admit I liked his "tribute" to his now missing hair that's "now in the bin". Just in case you haven't seen the video where he dyed his hair, here's that video:

Elmify's (Not So) Secret Plan To Ambush Charlieissocoollike

After being given a shout out by Charlie McDonnell (he's a well-known youtuber charlieissocoollike in case he's not well-known to you), Elmify has decided to repay him by giving some shout outs of her own. And probably lying in wait when he emerges from the airport when he arrives in the States (in December according to Charlie).



I've been watching Elmify's videos since around July 2010 and always laugh at her vlogs. It seems like just a little while back that she hit 10,000 subscribers and checking her channel, she's up to 30K after getting the thumbs up from Charlie. So a big congrats to Elmify - 50,000 by the end of the year? And 100K by mid-2011? I say yes it will happen.

Elmify was given a shout out by Charlie because of a video he had originally watched when he first joined Youtube over 3 years ago called The Liker Chain (see the post on Bradshaw's Blog: Charlie McDonnell Pays It Forward To Other Youtubers for more) and one of the youtubers he mentioned was Elmify.

So she is returning the favor by giving shout outs to other youtubers that she likes:

I haven't heard of those folks except for Lesliefoundhergrail who I am subbed to already and I agree needs more subs. The others will get the onceover and I will try to get them featured on this blog as well.

I took a quick look at electricfaeriedust (because of the name) and I don't know if that's a scottish accent or not. Usually it's relatively easy to tell where folks are from in the UK by their accent (there's a wide variation in accents the further from London you head) but I could be mistaken. She's a cute 18-year-old girl with a high nerdness factor which is obviously a plus but I'll have to watch more of her videos and those of the others I haven't subbed to yet.

You should check them out too because one of them might become you newest favorite youtuber.

Charlie McDonnell Pays It Forward To Other Youtubers

I just finished watching this video by charlieissocoollike or Charlie McDonnell as he is known to folks IRL and he did a sort of mini "My YouTube Story" of how he began on YouTube back 3 years, 7 months and 1 day ago. Like many, Charlie stumbled onto YouTube and found an intriguing video. Flash forward to today and Charlie has decided to make a video like the one that made the light bulb go off in his head and highlight some of his fellow youtubers that he particularly likes:



I have to agree with Charlie on his choices. I've been subscribed to Wheezy Waiter since he had only 3,000 subs or so - he's since been "discovered" and now is getting gobs and gobs of new subscribers and sits at 223K subscribers. I watch Wheezy regularly (and post here about him all the time: check here for Wheezy Waiter posts on Bradshaw's Blog).

Also, I liked seeing Charlie's shout out to elmify who I am also stalking, er, subbed to. I've been subbed to elmify since about mid-July after she was given a shout out by meekakitty and John Green of the vlogbrothers. With elmify, I would suggest watching her videos from the first one - she is so funny! I have put up some posts on here about her, but not enough. Check here for more elmify posts.

I had no idea who BrettDomino is, but because Charlie gave him a shout out I had to check out his channel and that's a definite thumbs up lol! Brett, along with band mate Steven Peavis make all sorts of great take offs of popular songs. I just watched their versions of Lady Gaga's Bad Romance along with We Speak No Americano and that is some wacky stuff! If you haven't been to Brett's channel, go over and subscribe.

The last one that Charlie wanted to highlight is the channel his mom does called Liliesarelike. I didn't know that Mrs McDonnell had a channel (she's up to 14K subscribers herself) and you might enjoy checking out what she has to say.

1. charlieissocoollike - Charlie McDonnell is well out in front of all in subscriber count with about 100,000 more subs than then next highest YouTube channel. McDonnell's channel is just about to hit the 500K level in subs. He also recently dyed his hair red just before attending VidCon in Los Angeles. 5. miaarose - Ah, the lovely Mia Rose and her music. She sings and plays guitar on 49 videos and is one of the most popular youtubers.

6. simonscat - Simple animation about a man (Simon) and his mischievous cat. I just wish there were more of them than the 7 videos uploaded. You can also visit the website simonscat.com.

8. nerimon - Alex Day's vlog. He is in with Charlie McDonnell in another channel, but this is where Alex rambles on about his life. I just subbed a short time ago and have yet to plow through all 100-plus of Alex's videos, but will do so and post a review of his channel.

9. THEMIDNIGHTBEAST - Stefan Abingdon, Dru Wakely and Ashley Neil Horne make up the group that says "We mock the living hell out of stuff for a living." Haven't been able to get past their latest video called "Daddy" but plan to review them as well. They are closing in on 200K subs, but are currently sitting at 177,235 for 9th spot on the Top 100 Youtubers in the United Kingdom.

10. eddsworld - Rounding out the Top 10 is Edd with his odd animation series "eddsworld." Edd is the creator and only animator and has his friends voice various characters (usually with the same name as his friends). Currently has 61 videos uploaded. More than worth a look.

My plan is to begin reviewing as many of these channels as possible. So far they've been given just a cursery overview, although I have been subbed to mememolly for some time. She's currently one of the main people online at ROCKETBOOM. I also want to take a closer look at Justin Sandercoe's channel, but that's because of my own exceedingly poor guitar playing.

In the 26-50 Most Subscribed U.K. List, there's some that I have been subbed to, like Paperlilies (hey, I like Bryony, so sue me), and I'm just scratching the surface on some others. I just watched the very weirdly funny Nicolas Cage Wants Cake by Harry Partridge (it's disturbing that I liked that one isn't it? lol), followed by the actual scene from the movie The Family Man that Partridge's video was based on.

That is the list for the United Kingdom as of today. I'll update it each month and post on Bradshaw's Blog. Quite a few successful folks on the list as far as getting subs is concerned. Personally, I think there are a bit to many of the gamers channels, but then again I don't have the time to waste playing videos games all day.

Obviously other youtubers love them because they are heavily subbed. It's too bad they are mostly all alligned to the massive machinima channel because they all look pretty much the same. If someone comes up with something original as far as gamer channels goes, they would probably have a hit channel on their hands.

Another thing I've noticed is that there doesn't seem to be quite as many actual vlogs in the United Kingdom as elsewhere, aside from Charlie McDonnell and some others, that genre seems a little lax. Daily vlogs can become very popular on both sides of the Atlantic and other parts of the world, but they do usually take a lot of commitment. Perhaps that's a challenge someone in the U.K. will pick up. But of course I am not criticizing the overall channels in a negative way. As you can see, to make the Top 100 in the U.K., you need to have more than 40,000 subscribers. There are lots of people who don't make that cut, but who are making great content and need to be seen.
