Katy B has revealed that she auditioned to play Hermione Granger in Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone when she was eight years old. However, the singer was cruelly rejected for the 2001 film after telling producers she hadn't read the book it was based on. "I auditioned to be Hermione in Harry Potter," she explained. "They were like, 'Have you read the book?' I was like, 'No.' And then they said, 'Next!'"

"I corresponded to their idea of Hermione. More by my way of playing her than by my physical appearance. But I think what was determining for them was how perfectly compatible our three personalities were. Very early on, I was confronted to Rupert and Dan so that they could see how we functioned as a trio. After all, we were supposed to become friends until the end of the series."

Thank goodness she read the book. Katy should have said she read the book. I think Emma was chosen because she was a cute little tart that read the book. How else would you explain the 8 auditions she had to go through. All Emma has been in eyebrows and over dramatic. She's won no stellar awards for her role as Hermione. She was a cute little girl that became a cute woman. That's all. That's all you need in Hollywood these days.

SHE’S got brains, beauty and a big bucks deal with a top fragrance house. But the one thing Harry Potter star Emma Watson lacks is that little bit of showbiz magic. Which is ironic considering she shot to fame as frizzy-haired heroine Hermione in the JK Rowling film franchise. The achingly hip 20-year-old has interrupted her studies at Ivy League Brown University to return to Tinseltown and become the face of Lancome. “Emma Watson has become the icon of her generation,” gushed one spokesman. An “icon”? Lucky, more like. From Mia Farrow through to An Education actress Carey Mulligan, Watson’s elfin crop has been done to death. As has the aloof British beauty. Just ask Keira Knightly. Then there’s the masculine get-up she sports in the fragrance campaign – a look that can only be carried off by Diane Keaton circa Annie Hall. A word of advice, Emma: go back to uni and find yourself a personality.

YOU wouldn't catch Hermione Granger jettisoning her studies to become the "face" of a French cosmetics company. But it seems the Hogwarts brainbox's flowing locks were not the only of her alter ego actress Emma Watson was determined to shed when filming the final Harry Potter film ended last year. Watson - who has spent more than half of her life playing Hermione - once claimed her personality was fused with her character's to such an extent that in the latter films she hardly felt she was acting (She uses Hermione to her advantage to defend her dating life. Click on LOVE LIFE and GEORGE CRAIG below) Like Hermione, Watson was bookish and focused, gaining three A-grade A-levels despite having missed out on a great deal of schooling while filming.

When she left the UK to study at an Ivy League university in the US she insisted she wanted to be allowed to live a NORMAL STUDENT LIFE. Yet for all her apparent ambivalence about fame, she has quite self-consciously set about turning herself into a fashion icon. By the time she was 18, she was already a regular on the London PARTY SCENE, courting the PAPARAZZI even as she complained about them. But ever since she had her hair cropped, she has indulged in an ORGY of self-promotion that would make Simon Cowell
BLUSH.

Having put her STUDIES at Brown University on Rhode Island on hold, she has been photographed on a succession of red carpets and graced the cover of Marie Claire and Vogue. In the last few weeks alone we have seen Watson in a white Hakaan dress (The Elle style awards); in a lacy Valentino dress (the Baftas), and in a Burberry trench coat (leaving the Mahiki nightclub in London with American movie producer Harvey Weinstein.) (They left out Bungelow 8 which is her favorite night club and the groucho club but she's been doing this since she was 17 while claiming she doesn't like to drink or party.)

Last week she had another career boost and managed to wring as much publicity out of it as possible. For three days she had been tweeting teasers before revealing all in a final riddle: "It starts with an L and ends with an E, I'm sure you have guessed, the new face of LANCOME  is ME!" The revelation signaled another round of photographs - including Watson in lace shorts and a man's jacket - as a new ad was shot in Paris. "Thanks to her charm, romanticism and her incredible modernity, Emma Watson has become the icon of her generation," Lancome's president Youcef Nabi said.

That's some accolade for someone who's not quite 21. But then Watson is not your average young woman. Not only have her films netted her £19 million (she was the highest earning woman in Hollywood in 2009), she has also carved herself a career in the fashion industry, designing eco-friendly clothes for Fair Trade company PEOPLE TREE  and a capsule collection, Pure Threads, with ALBERTA FERRETTI. At Brown University she may have shared a dorm, but she was mingling with the likes of Demi Moore's daughter Scout Willis, while in the UK she owns a £3m mansion in north London.

Yet her success has not always made her popular

In November, the Ivy League blog IVYGATE wrote an open letter mocking her pleas for ANONYMITY. "We feel for this lost soul, awash in misery and Burberry, so desperate to lead that magical life where you have to hold your own umbrella and wash your beer-stained pants with Woolite in a dingy dorm bathroom," it said. Advising her how to fit in better, it went on: "If you want to be a normal college student, stop dating Spanish rock stars and wearing your hair like Mia Farrow from Rosemary's Baby."

When Watson auditioned for The Philosopher's Stone at the age of nine, she could not have imagined the way the films would come to dominate her life. Although she had no professional acting experience, she felt she was destined to play Hermione because they had so much in common. "I was very keen. I was super-eager to please and be good. And I was always kind of bossy," she said.

Like Hermione, Watson was born into a successful middle-class family. Her parents, lawyers Chris Watson and Jaqueline Luesby, moved home to England from France when she was five, but split up soon afterwards. She and her younger brother lived with their mother in Oxfordshire, visiting their father at weekends. Yet her dad seems to have exerted a greater influence on her career. It was he who urged her to think carefully before signing up to the few Potter films (a move which led the studio to up her fee).

In the early days, Watson seemed quite happy to live up to her geek image, telling how her exhaustive knowledge of the Harry Potter books led other cast members to ask her for advice. As she blossomed into a beautiful young woman, however, she found herself the focus of a different kind of attention. Her explosion on to the London scene fuelled speculation about her LOVE LIFE, with gossip columnists linking her to Daniel Radcliffe, although she has always said dating her co-stars would feel "incestuous".

So frenzied have reports been that it's difficult to tell fact from fiction. But boyfriends have included financier Jay Barrymore; front man of indie band One Night Only, GEORGE CRAIG; and the aforementioned Spanish rocker Rafael Cebrian. Unfortunately, her high profile has also led to her being stalked on several occasions, with the police called in to warn off one male fan who approached her at open lectures at her school.

For a while, Watson - who was the voice of Princess Pea in The Tale Of Despereaux - seemed insecure about her abilities and unsure if she wanted to continue acting. Having signed up for a drama class in the US, she declared herself the worst actress there. But recent projects including roles in the films  PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER and MY WEEK WITH MARILYN suggest her confidence has returned. Her modeling career, which took off when she was the face of Burberry, has also been helped by her flourishing relationship with Mario Testino who has been photographing her in Paris.

Yet, with The Deathly Hallows Part 2 due out in the summer, it will be a while before she can escape Hermione's clutches completely. Perhaps that's why those who know her best are warning her not to get too complacent about her success. As her father said when he first saw her with SHORT HAIR : "Don't get carried away. You're not Audrey Hepburn yet."

A jumble of books and clothes — cream Prada pumps, suede Louboutin platforms and piles of Agnes B casual wear — remain. The girls in her dorm, who include Scout Willis, the daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, expect she will send someone to pack. They are already saying how much they will miss Emma Watson, the unassuming star of the Harry Potter films, who bunked down in a single bed in a shared room for the past year and a half. She started studying history at the college in September 2009, and was on course to complete her degree in 2013. That has been deferred, she says just by a few terms, though many believe she won’t be back at all.

And the reason, it seems, is that Emma — 21 next month — is confident she can put the Potter films behind her and become a star in her own right. This week, it was announced she has been anointed the face of Lancome, succeeding Julia Roberts. It is a huge role that will not only net her millions, but ensure her face is on billboards all over the world. Lancome said: ‘Emma Watson has become the icon of her generation.’She is emerging from her shell. After a couple of years of uncertainty, Emma no longer feels crushed by her £30 million wealth or embarrassed by her success. When she first found out how much money she had made, aged 18, she says she felt physically sick. It seems it has taken her all this time to get used to it.

After ten years of playing Hermione Granger and, she says, sacrificing her childhood and normality on the altar of the Warner Bros agenda, she was ready to give it all up. That, though, has changed. She’s learning to enjoy the pleasures of success. You’ll see her taking a spa break with friends in Thailand and propping up the bar in top London clubs. Home is a £3 million pad in North London, where her Toyota Prius is proudly parked outside.  She has had cookery lessons from celebrity chef Joel Robuchon as she is tired of paying caterers for her dinner parties. It’s all rather grand. Her friends are starting to include the glitterati, and she has shown a particular interest in making an impression on all of the more important people in fashion, such as Burberry’s Christopher Bailey and Antoine Arnault, son of LVMH (Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton) boss Bernard. She’ll soon shoot a campaign for Joel Robuchon with Mario Testino. Come Bafta season this year, she was the most flirtatious of all the starlets, parading in a series of carefully chosen outfits, and working the room at the best parties. Film mogul Harvey Weinstein, the man who helped to make the careers of Gwyneth Paltrow and Cate Blanchett, was among those she dazzled. ‘For ten years she has been this schoolgirl in the Harry Potter films and now you see her as a woman for the first time,’ he said. ‘She has an elegance about her — she looks like Jean Shrimpton — plus she has a gift for comedy and drama, and we’re just starting to see her range. I feel we’re going to work together a lot in the future.’This week, her starring role in a new film is to be announced — possibly a project with Weinstein. She has already filmed a small part in My Week With Marilyn about Marilyn Monroe, starring Michelle Williams, and from May she will be shooting the film Perks Of Being A Wallflower.

Over the summer, she will have to fit in a final hit of promotional activity for the last instalment of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows — a task which, it seems, may not fill her with delight. For Emma has moved on. When the cast and crew held a wrap party after shooting the final set of re-shoots around Christmas, she didn’t go. Co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint did. While the three key actors were genuinely good friends during the making of the early films, the bond seems to have loosened considerably during the last movie. Perhaps there was resentment over the way Emma took her time signing for the final two films. Her contract came up for renewal in 2006, but while Daniel and Rupert signed for five years without a second thought, she admitted in an interview this year that she ‘agonised’ before deciding that she would, and was considering giving up being an actress.

So why the sudden change of heart about her film career? People who know Emma say it’s simply a question of having had some time to catch her breath — she needed to get some space away from the Potter juggernaut and to decide whether she wanted a life in the public eye. Friends say the revival of her career ambition is also partly down to the sage counsel of her father, lawyer Chris Watson. An Oxford graduate who works at a senior level for one of the larger London firms, he has supported her every step of the way. He has often been with her on publicity junkets and film premieres around the globe. She adores him, and takes his advice on everything. Significantly, his views were the first she sought on that haircut — the pixie crop she had to celebrate the end of her Potter years. She says: ‘He said: "Don’t get carried away. You’re not Audrey Hepburn yet." But he loves it now, and so he’s eating his words.’He and Emma’s mother Jackie were divorced in 1995. He has since remarried, to Elizabeth Green, and they have three further children, Toby and twins Nina and Lucy. Their North London home is a five-minute stroll from Emma’s.

Her one financial splurge — a £1 million ski chalet in France — was made with her father in mind. He is a passionate skier.Those who know her from the Potter days say that, even though she lived with her mother, her father’s influence was paramount. She was, though, troubled from time to time by their ‘wringingly awful’ divorce. And it was even whispered that her parents had opposing views on whether she should make the Deathly Hallows films at all. ‘All I can tell you is that there was a lot of unhappiness connected with the parents,’ says a Potter source.

Will she ever go back to university? She says she ‘fully intends’ to return to Brown and her academic career is ‘very important’ to her. But there is rather a lot of cynicism about that on the Ivy League campus, where it has also been noticed that she chooses to hang out with only the wealthiest and best-connected girls. Her best friend is Scout Willis — she went to her home over New Year. She’s also close to Madison Utendahl, a glamorous young lady whose banker father is stepping out with supermodel and TV personality Tyra Banks. Her college romance was again with someone connected to the fringes of stardom — a Spanish acting student named Rafael Cebrian, who is the son of the co-founder of El Pais newspaper. He was also the drummer in The Monomes.

It seems Emma has a weakness for rock musicians. Take her flirtation with Johnny Borrell at a Fashion Week party in 2008 or her romance last summer with George Craig, singer of pop band One Night Only. They did Glastonbury together, and were spotted snogging in hospitality tents across the site. But it didn’t last — Emma says she is starting to wonder if her wealth is an issue. ‘I hope it doesn’t complicate relationships for me,’ she says. ‘I think it can make guys quite uncomfortable. I do have to be sensitive.’ She probably needn’t worry too much. Because the direction in which she is heading means that pretty much everyone she meets from here on will be wealthy, famous or both
