Thousands of Maoist opposition supporters have poured into the streets of the capital Katmandu as part of an indefinite strike to depose Nepal's prime minister.

Disgruntled opposition supporters, some brandishing the Maoist party's red flag and bamboo sticks, brought the country into a standstill on Sunday as their general strike forced schools, markets and transportation networks to halt normal activities.

Obama: BP liable for oil cleanup bill

US President Barack Obama says the British Petroleum is responsible for the cost of the clean-up of an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

"BP is responsible for this leak," said Obama. "BP will be paying the bill." He made the remarks during a visit to Louisiana on Wednesday. He emphasized that the slick is a "potentially unprecedented" environmental disaster.

4 killed in Darfur protest

Clashes between Sudanese security forces and angry investors who were protesting an abortive investment scheme left at least four dead in Darfur.

The joint United Nations and African Union peacekeeping forces in Darfur have said that gunfire was heard after hundreds of angry protesters marched toward El Fashir, the capital city of Sudan's north Darfur to demand reimbursements.

Israeli forces arrest six teenagers

Israeli forces arrest six Palestinian teenagers, all under 16, in the town of Beit Ummar, and take them to an unknown detention center, witnesses said.

The soldiers claim that the youth took part in a protest on Sunday over settlements in the area between Beit Ummar and the nearby Karmi Tzur settlement.

A senior Iranian official says although Iran has gotten beyond Western-led nuclear challenges, it still faces provocations by the West under the pretext of human rights.

Secretary General of Iran's High Council for Human Rights Mohammad Javad Larijani reiterated that the second major and "greater" challenge, after the nuclear issue, that has been brought by the West against Iran concerns human rights issues and resolutions of (UN's) International human rights bodies.

A Fatah official says the Arab League support for indirect talks is not enough without firm promises from the United States or Israel over settlement freeze.

Before the Palestinians and Israelis begin talks on any peace deal, Nabil Amer said on Sunday he called for an emergency meeting of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Central Council to discuss the legitimacy of any step to be taken in this direction.

Blast leaves 7 dead in Afghanistan

A powerful bomb blast has killed 7 people and injured 14 others in southeastern Afghanistan amid escalating violence in the war-weary country.

According to Afghan officials, the blast took place in Zormat district in the southeastern province of Paktika on Sunday. Eyewitnesses in the area say most of the victims are women and children.

Two African migrants 'shot' in Egypt

Law enforcement agents in Egypt have killed two African migrants who were trying to cross into Israel, a security official has said.

The Egyptian police on Sunday separately shot dead an Eritrean migrant and another African of undetermined nationality near the border, the official said, according to AFP.

Founder of the Stalin Museum has been electrocuted and bludgeoned to death while resting at a tennis court southeast of the Russian capital of Moscow.

According to Volgograd newspaper Pervaya Gazeta, three men attacked businessman Vasily Bukhtiyenko with electric shock devices and then repeatedly hit him on the head.

New York police hunt failed bomber

US police have said it is not yet clear whether a failed bombing in New York was of domestic or foreign origin, after a US monitoring group said the Pakistani Taliban had claimed responsibility in an internet statement.

Raymond Kelly, the New York City police commissioner, said on Sunday that officials have "no evidence to support this claim" and Pakistani Taliban sources also told Al Jazeera that they were not involved.

US attack kills two Afghan children

At least two children have been killed in a US missile attack in eastern Afghanistan, amid rising public opposition to the presence of foreign troops in the country.

Afghan authorities say the incident took place after rockets hit a residential area in Kunar Province. At least six people, including one woman, were severely injured in the attack.

A statement posted on the internet on Sunday said the attempted attack the previous day was to avenge the killing of two "Muslim martyrs", leaders of al-Qaeda linked groups in Iraq.

Egyptians protest over minimum wage

Hundreds of Egyptian workers have gathered outside Egypt's cabinet building demanding a rise in the minimum wage, which has been set at $6.30 a month since 1984.

The protesters were calling for the government to implement a court order that would boost the minimum wage and help millions of poor cope with rising prices.

Indian police have increased security around a court in Mumbai before the expected verdict in the trial of a Pakistani man accused of killing scores of people during the November 2008 attacks on the city.

UN investigates DR Congo massacre

The United Nations has started investigating reports of the killing of about 100 Congolese in an attack by Uganda's Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels in February.
