US : UK troops to leave Helmand

Simmering negotiations are being held between top US commanders and Senior British military officials to decide over the proposed relocation of British troops from the Helmand province to the Kandahar region.

US commanders have pushed for the redeployment of US Marines in the Afghanistan's Helmand province in a bid to simplify the command arrangements, while some senior British figures fear the move would sap the public support for war.

Car bomb explodes in County Armagh

A car bomb has detonated today in Northern Ireland, leaving two people slightly injured during an attack outside a police station in County Armagh.

Local residents warned in a call to police officers that a suspected car had been left outside a police station in County Armagh. The officers were on their way to the scene when the bomb went off and consequently injured a woman in her 80s and a man who sustained a minor injury.

In one incident in Saheb district of the Kunduz province on Friday, Afghan police forces killed several militants, said senior security official Daud Ibrahimi on Saturday.

An Essex man was arrested and suspended from driving for three years after police caught him driving drunk in his daughter's 4ft by 2ft Barbie mini jeep.

Paul Hutton, 40, and father of four, was spotted by police at 9pm crawling down Brooklands Road near his house in Jaywick, Essex, at 4mph in his daughter's pink and white Barbie mini jeep. Never making it to his friend's house, he was instead taken to Clacton police station and given a breathalyzer test which determined that he was over the blood alcohol limit to be driving. Mr. Hutton was released at 5:30am and later appeared at Colchester Magistrates' Court where he was given a 12-month conditional discharge, banned from driving for three years and ordered to pay £85.

Iran says its ongoing military maneuver in the Persian Gulf displays Tehran's capability in countering insecurity and disruption of order in the region.

Riots follow Greek bailout request

Greek riot police have clashed with protesters in the capital Athens demonstrating over the government's decision to request an aid package from the European Union and International Monetary Fund (IMF).

About 2,500 people marched in the capital on Friday after George Papandreou, the Greek prime minister, asked for the activation of an $60m EU/IMF aid mechanism aimed at pulling Greece out of a debt crisis shaking the euro zone.

A White House Middle East envoy has told Israeli and Palestinian leaders that Barack Obama, the US president, wants a peace deal in the region "soon, not in some vague and distant time in the future."

George Mitchell delivered the message on Friday after a busy day of talks with Israeli and Palestinian officials aimed at kickstarting the stagnant peace process.

US launches unmanned space plane

The US Air Force has launched an unmanned space plane on its maiden voyage into orbit to serve as a test platform for unspecified experiments.

"It is a very versatile space craft and can do things that a space shuttle cannot," Joan Johnson-Freese, chair of the National Security department at the US Naval War College, said to Al Jazeera on Friday.

Ash from a volcano in Iceland has forced the country's main airport to shut down, as the rest of European airspace returned to normal following days of chaos.

A change in wind direction swirled debris from the Eyjafjallajokull towards Reykjavik, Iceland's capital, halting airline operations on Friday for the first time since it erupted nine days ago.

A White House Middle East envoy has arrived in Israel for talks with Israeli and Palestinian officials in an effort to kickstart the deadlocked peace process between the two sides.

George Mitchell met with Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, on Friday, a day after Netanyahu said in a television interview that there would be no construction freeze of Israeli buildings in Arab sectors of Jerusalem.

At least a dozen Palestinian and international civilians were injured during the weekly nonviolent protest at the central West Bank village of Bil'in.

This Friday protest marked the end of the Fifth Bil'in International Conference for Palestinian Popular Resistance, which began on Wednesday, April 21 with a full line-up of speakers including politicians, leaders of Popular Committees, Israeli activists, and international solidarity activists.

Like an arsenal of other out-of-left-field ideas that Myhrvold's firm, Intellectual Ventures, is working on to combat the disease, the concept sounded more like Star Wars than a development project. But Myhrvold -- whose prior experience includes 14 years as Bill Gates's ideas guru at Microsoft -- and his colleagues built it out of ordinary electronic devices they bought on eBay.
