US can use Krygyz base for another year

Following the ousting of its president, Kurmanbek Bakiyev...Kyrgyzstan has extended the contract permitting the United States to use the Manas air base for another year. The present contract expires this June.

The Manas base is a crucially important part of the supply line to US troops in Afghanistan. Kyrgyzstan's recent political turmoil has been seen as a threat to the continuing use by the US of the base that has been operational since 2000. Last year, then-president Bakiyev threatened to close the base but eventually allowed it to remain open.

Mr Bakiyev has now gone into exile in Kazakhstan, following mediation by the US, Russia and the European Union. The country's interim government says he has officially renounced the presidency. It is not known whether he will return. Interim government leader Roza Otunbayeva is, however, still insisting he stand trial for the deaths of dozens of protesters in the uprising that drove him from power.

Russia's Security Council voices major threats to Russia

Moscow: Russia's Security Council has named the main threats to Russia's national interests.

According to Yury Baluyevsky, the council's deputy head, the territorial claims of Japan, Latvia and Estonia, and the deployment of the U.S. global missile defense system pose the major military risks.

He also expressed concern over the spread of outer space militarization and international terrorism.

He cited findings of both Russian and foreign specialists which showed that the number of countries with nuclear weapons would rise as nationalism and separatism spread wider. In the long term, international political relationships will focus on the struggle for energy resources, food and drinking water.

Today, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev received a delegation headed by Deputy Defense Minister for Policy Michele Flournoy, AzerTaj state news agency reported.

Various aspects of Azerbaijani-U.S bilateral relations were discussed at the meeting. Views on the current state of relations between the two countries were exchanged.

Azerbaijani minister of foreign affairs receives US undersecretary of Defense

Baku: Azerbaijani minister of foreign affairs Elmar Mammadyarov has received US Undersecretary of Defense Michèle Flournoy.

According to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the sides discussed bilateral cooperation as well subjects of regional and global security.

According to Michele Flournoy, the USA appraises Azerbaijan's support in the direction of ensuring peace in Afghanistan.

Azerbaijan collaborates with the USA in different spheres, said E. Mammadyarov.

Netherlands Defence Ministry says 2 soldiers killed in Afghanistan

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands: Two Dutch soldiers serving as part of the NATO mission in Afghanistan have been killed by a roadside bomb, the Netherlands' Defence Ministry says. Another was seriously wounded.

Ministry spokesman Otte Beeksma says the men were killed by an improvised explosive device near the outpost Tabar in the southern province of Uruzgan. Their families have been informed.

The deaths bring the total number of Dutch fatalities in Afghanistan to 23 since 2006.

The 1,600 Dutch troops in Afghanistan are due to return after the end of the country's mission there in August.

The Dutch government collapsed in February in a dispute over whether to keep troops in Afghanistan at NATO's urging.

Kosovo: NATO military contingent wants to assure personally of positive development of the situation

Pristina: Representatives of the NATO military contingent, led by Admiral Janpaolo di Paola and the commander of the NATO Allied Joint Force Command Na Admiral Mark Fitzgerald will visit Kosovo to "assure [themselves] of the positive development of the situation personally", Serbian Radio Media reported.

In the framework of the visit, the NATO representatives will watch a training of Kosovo security forces [the Kosovo Security Force], which will be held at a power station in Obilic.

The aim of the training is to show the readiness of Kosovo security forces to react to crises.
