The question for Kinsley isn't whether negative qualities of Jewish bankers or the bad behavior of Jewish firms like Goldman have anything to do with being Jewish.

In his report on Gaza issued late last year, prominent South African jurist Richard Goldstone accused Israel and Hamas of committing war crimes. His language also showed awareness of the fact that the former is an occupying power with most sophisticated weapon arsenal (as reflecting in the number of Palestinian victims), and the latter is a besieged, occupied faction in a state of self-defense. Although Goldstone must have been aware of the kind of hysteria such a report would generate, he still did not allow ideological or ethnic affiliation to stand between him and his moral convictions.

After a week away, here's my advice: in news terms, you can afford to take a vacation.  When I came back last Sunday, New Orleans was bracing for tough times (again).  BP, a drill-baby-drill oil company that made $6.1 billion in the first quarter of this year and lobbied against "new, stricter safety rules" for offshore drilling, had experienced an offshore disaster for which ordinary Americans are going to pay through the nose (again).  News photographers were gearing up for the usual shots of oil-covered wildlife (again).  A White House — admittedly Democratic, not Republican — had deferred to an energy company's needs, accepted its PR and lies, and then moved too slowly when disaster struck (again).

A Timetable For War

Posted: 05 May 2010 11:00 PM PDT

Readers of my articles will know that I am extremely pessimistic about the prospects for peace in the Middle East.  I do not believe for a second that the leaders of Israel actually consider Iran to be an "existential" threat but the fact that they have cried wolf so often has convinced the Israeli public that it is so.  Worse still, Israel's friends in the US have convinced the American public of the same thing even though Iran does not threaten the United States at all.  Relying on a complaisant media that has fully embraced the fabricated narrative of fanatical Mullahs brandishing nuclear weapons shortly before handing them over to al-Qaeda, a majority of Americans now believes that Iran must be dealt with by force and that it already has a nuclear weapon.  As in the case in the lead up to the invasion of Iraq, the fictitious threat has taken on an ominous reality because the lie has been repeated often enough to appear to be truth.

So we exchange information about photography and current events. He was dead set against Obama from the start. I knew Obama had a real shot. Therefore, I was hoping (like most every sane individual) that Obama might be just fine, a breath of fresh air, a nice transition from the excruciating, malfeasant co-presidency of G.W. Bush and Dick Cheney. I had an open mind on the subject. My tailor did not. He felt that Obama would be a disaster, and told me so in no uncertain terms.  Now he likes to greet me when I walk into his shop, "Hey Obama!" My retort: "My name ain't Obama!" His response, "I told you so!" My follow-up, "Yes, you did!"
