A very good friend, a classmate of mine in the fifties when we were both students at the American University of Beirut, called me from Germany last week abruptly announcing that he and his German-born wife will not be coming to Washington in June as promised. The Guardian/ ICM Research poll torpedoed recent predictions that Labour`s chances of securing majority of seats in the upcoming General Election in Britain would be far fetched, putting the gap between two main rivals ( Labour and Tory parties ) at only 4%.
Despite a string of polls, a number of which - YouGov poll for the Sunday Times -showed 10 points lead for conservatives , the latest ICM survey suggest they lay on a bit thick about how Tories would fare in May 6 election . The latest figures put public support for Labour party at 33% - four points increase since ICM poll carried out for the Guardian last week, while at the same time conservative support has dropped one point since then to 37%. According to the findings Labour Party now is closely trailing behind Conservatives with a wafer-thin 4% lead.

The problem our nation faces is very much like a marriage where one partner has broken, and has no intention of keeping, the marital vows. 7.8-magnitude quake hits Indonesia, tsunami alert issued

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's north Sumatra early on Wednesday morning.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake struck at a depth of 46 kilometers (29 miles), just off northern Sumatra, at 5:15 am (2215 GMT Tuesday), AFP reported.

Israel refused to recognise an Israeli nationality at the country's establishment in 1948, making an unusual distinction between "citizenship" and "nationality". Although all Israelis qualify as "citizens of Israel", the state is defined as belonging to the "Jewish nation", meaning not only the 5.6 million Israeli Jews but also more than seven million Jews in the diaspora.
