Afghan 2010 troop death toll reaches 593

KABUL: The toll of foreign troops killed in Afghanistan this year crept closer to 600 Sunday with the death of a NATO soldier in a Taliban-style attack in southern Afghanistan, the alliance said.

The soldier, whose nationality was not given, died "following an improvised explosive device attack," NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said, referring to remote-controlled bombs widely used by the insurgents.

The death brings to 593 the total number of foreign soldiers to die so far this year in the Afghan war, according to an AFP tally based on the independent icasualities.org website. The total last year was 521.

The United States and NATO have more than 150,000 troops in Afghanistan fighting the nine-year Taliban-led insurgency....

The rebels have stepped up attacks every year since the Taliban regime was toppled in a US-led invasion in late 2001.

As part of a counter-insurgency strategy arrived at late last year, Washington deployed an extra 30,000 reinforcements, with NATO contributing an additional 10,000 soldiers.

Many of the new deployments are currently engaged in what is seen as a key push against the Taliban in their southern heartland of Kandahar, where the insurgency is at its fiercest.

Swedish soldier dies in Afghanistan

A Swedish soldier died in northern Afghanistan and two others were wounded when their vehicle ran over an improvised explosive device, a Swedish military communique said. The vehicle had been called in after clashes west of Mazar-i-Sharif. The wounds to the two other soldiers were not in life-threatening, the statement said.

Some 500 Swedish troops are currently posted in northern Afghanistan serving in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

Swedish troops were sent to the country in early 2002, even though Sweden is officially neutral and not a member of NATO.

According to the armed forces five Swedish troops have died in Afghanistan since that date.

ISAF said yesterday that two coalition soldiers had died in separate attacks.

The first soldier died following an improvised explosive device blast in the south of the country, while the second was killed in an "insurgent attack" in the north, ISAF said without releasing any further details.

It is ISAF policy not to identify the nationalities of dead soldiers.

This year, the deadliest yet for foreign forces, 592 NATO-led soldiers have been killed in fighting in Afghanistan, according to an AFP tally based on the independent icasualities.org

One Swedish soldier killed, two injured in Afghanistan

Kabul: One Swedish solider was killed and two others were injured after their vehicle hit a roadside bomb in northern Afghanistan, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) reported on Sunday.

The bombing occurred on Saturday when the Swedish soldiers were on patrol in the Chemtal district of the Balkh province, the NATO-led coalition said.

Since the beginning of this year, a total of over 590 international forces have been killed in Afghanistan compared to 521 servicemen killed in the entire year 2009.

Violence has surged in Afghanistan in recent months, with the Taliban group, which was toppled in a 2001 U.S.-led campaign, staging regular attacks on provincial government officials, police and civilians and planting roadside bombs to target Afghan, U.S. and NATO troops.

NATO Service Member Killed in Southern Afghanistan

NATO say one of its service members was killed Sunday in a bomb blast in southern Afghanistan.

On Saturday, NATO said two service members died in two bomb attacks in the southern and northern parts of the country.

NATO did not release the identity or nationality of those killed in either the Sunday or Saturday attacks. However, the Swedish military identified the soldier killed in the north Saturday as one of its own. It said two other troops were wounded when their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb.
....
NATO has been supporting efforts by Afghan President Hamid Karzai to reconcile with Taliban militants.

A spokesman for Afghanistan's High Council for Peace, Bryali Helali, told VOA Saturday there have been "unofficial" discussions between the Afghan government and the Taliban.

Helali's comments came a day after the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, U.S. General David Petraeus, said NATO was facilitating the safe passage of Taliban leaders to Kabul.

The Taliban has not commented since Wednesday, when it categorically denied any contact with the Afghan government.

Sofia Waiting for Ankara's Decision on Common Missile Shield Radar System

At present, Bulgaria's defense experts are waiting for their Turkish colleagues to decide if they want a radar system of the common missile defense project to be installed in their territory.

If Ankara says No, Sofia will officially state its readiness to host the missile defense facility, diplomatic sources informed the standart.

Turkey's stand on the construction of the common European missile defense shield is expected to be a much debated issue during the oncoming summit in Lisbon. Being a neighbor of Tehran, Ankara has not yet stated if it will agree to host one of the shield's key radar systems in its territory and even the visit of NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, to Ankara not long ago could not help the Turkish authorities make up their mind.

In this line of thoughts, Sofia's readiness to host the radar station will be used only as plan B. Sofia will officially state its stand after the talks in Lisbon. According to well-informed diplomatic sources, Sofia may table a bid to host the radar station shortly before Lisbon's summit.

Slashing UK defence budget 'could cripple Nato's global military power'

Slashing the UK defence budget could cripple Nato's global military power, US experts have warned.

Downing Street yesterday refused to guarantee armed forces spending will remain above the 2% Nato requires.

Former White House adviser Anthony Cordesman said: "We might end up with a Nato with almost no one who could seriously project power outside Europe."

Petraeus Recruits 1,200 More Italian Troops For Afghanistan

Italy to send 1,200 more soldiers to Afghanistan

Baku: Italy wants to expand its troop presence in Afghanistan by more than a third, Italian media quoted Defence Minister Ignazio La Russa as saying Saturday during a meeting with United States General David Petraeus in Milan, APA reports quoting Earth Times.

"We have decided to increase our contingent in Afghanistan to 4,000 troops by the end of the year," he said.

Italy currently has some 2,800 soldiers participating in the NATO- led International Security Assistance Force. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi had repeatedly promised to deploy more soldiers this year for a limited time to the war-torn country.

An additional deployment of military trainers early next year is not to be ruled out either, in a bid to hand over regions in the west of the country to Afghan troops by the end of 2011, La Russa added.

Petraeus, the commander of international forces in Afghanistan, was said to have emphatically welcomed during the meeting with La Russa reported peace negotiations between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Taliban fighters.

NATO must keep military pressure on Taliban: Rasmussen

PARIS: NATO does not favour suspending military action in Afghanistan in support of peace moves with the Taliban, the military body's general secretary said here Friday.

"I am not in favour of suspending military operations in Afghanistan. On the contrary, I think that a continuation of military operations is a precondition for a successful reconciliation process, because victory over the Taliban will facilitate reconciliation," Anders Fogh Rasmussen said at the French International Relations Institute.

He called on major Asian powers to unify actions for the security objective in Afghanistan, stressing the key role of Afghanistan's neighbors in the fight against terrorism and in helping the country to restore stability and security.

"To find a solution in Afghanistan, we must engage Pakistan and also India to reduce tension, and turn their attention to their borders with Afghanistan. China plays a key role, too," he told the French think tank.

Djibouti: U.S. Air Force Leaves Footprints Throughout Africa

Top enlisted Airman visits Horn of Africa
by Staff Sgt. Heather Stanton
Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa Public Affairs Office

CAMP LEMONNIER, Djibouti: The chief master sergeant of the Air Force spent a day here to see firsthand the role Airmen play in the mission of Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa and throughout the U.S. Africa Command theater.

During the Oct. 13 visit, Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James A. Roy visited Airmen in various work centers around the camp.
....
Though this was the first time Chief Roy has been to Africa, he noticed how engaged U.S. AFRICOM and 17th Air Force officials are throughout the continent.

"I see their presence in the theater," he said. "You can't do this mission from afar, and it's evident to me that AFRICOM and 17th Air Force leaders are engaged in this theater."
....
Another challenge, Chief Roy points out, is the new focus on building partner nation capacity.

"That's fairly new for us as an Air Force," Chief Roy said. "For Airmen coming into U.S. AFRICOM and 17th Air Force, the biggest challenge, I believe, is understanding the mission. It's different, but that's who we are today. Our people will adjust, and they'll train for that (mission)...."

During his visit, Chief Roy held an Air Force enlisted call where he shared his focus areas: being ready for joint and coalition operations, deliberate development and building resiliency.

"We are the smallest Air Force we've ever been," the chief said. "We have about 40,000 Airmen deployed around the world. But every single day, we have about 200,000 of our Airmen employed by a combatant commander."
....
Chief Roy also received a mission brief from Rear Admiral Brian Losey, the CJTF-HOA commander, and Command Sergeant Major Scott Mykoo, the CJTF-HOA senior enlisted leader.

"I was absolutely impressed with the leadership here at CJTF-HOA," the chief said. "They really appreciate the work our Airmen are doing for the task force. I thank them for their leadership and continued support of our Airmen deployed here."
