Shocked by the story behind the headline

"It was not at all rational, the way it's written in the news; it was chaos," a member of Ma'an's TV crew said after being caught up in the middle of Tuesday's settler violence near Nablus.

"With the settlers, you just don't know what they're going to do, who they'll target," she said.

Curing world disappointment with Israel

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 07:09 AM PDT

A US State Department spokesman told reporters this week that Washington was disappointed with Israel because of its failure to extend the settlement moratorium for as long as the peace talks were moving.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon used the same words to describe how the United Nations feels towards Israel. French President Nicolas Sarkozy, meeting with President Mahmoud Abbas in Paris, expressed the same sentiment vis-a-vis Israel's decisions.

Knowing one's real friends

The Israeli-Palestinian talks taking place under the auspices of the United States highlight a denial of reality and a shocking ignorance of international relations by the parties involved.

More than providing any chance of a just solution to the Palestinian problem, the talks offer an opportunity to evaluate the credibility and legitimacy of the various actors in the process. They are an opportunity for the Palestinian people, the Arab community, the Islamic community, and the international community at large to review the integrity of several actors in the process and to learn lessons that might make a solution possible in the future. Some of these lessons are already apparent.

Reader comments may often be the best litmus test for public opinion. They are sometimes even more interesting than the article itself because they provoke varying points of view from a wide spectrum of people, many of whom violently clash.

This was certainly true of a recent story and video showing a settler leader in Silwan running down two Palestinian boys with his car. The video, understandably, generated a barrage of comments, some of them shockingly callous.

Tyranny suppressing truth in America

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 05:35 AM PDT

Things are so out of hand with propaganda creating chaos that Americans are taking to the streets in protest. They demand the truth from the mainstream media but is this demand realistic???

There are groups who are taking to the streets literally with their complaint. For example, "Media Research Center" recently sent in trucks with the words, "TELL THE TRUTH" written boldly on the sides of all the trucks. The little parade drove circles around the buildings of ABC, NBC, CBS and The New York Times in New York City.

Heroes for the Beaten, Foreclosed on, Imprisoned Masses

Common Dreams Staughton Lynd could have built an enviable career as an academic but for his conscience. His conscience led him as a young undergraduate disgusted by the elitism around him to drop out of Harvard, and tortured him when he returned to finish his degree. It plagued him after he received his doctorate from Columbia and saw him head to the segregated South to join his friend Howard Zinn in teaching history at the historically black Spelman College. It propelled him to become the director of Freedom Schools in the Mississippi Summer Project of 1964. It prodded him a year later to chair the first march against the Vietnam War in Washington, D.C., and join Tom Hayden and Herbert Aptheker on a trip to Hanoi.

Mumbai Terror Suspect Worked for U.S. Government

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 05:14 AM PDT

Last week U.S. officialdom declared there was still a threat from unsubstantiated terrorists in Europe while New York City police conducted a drill simulating a Mumbai-style attack on civilians in Manhattan's financial district. The State Department's counterterror chief told reporters in London that a travel alert issued on October 3 that advised travelers in Europe that a "Mumbai-style assault" on civilian targets might be imminent, or maybe not.

On Saturday, federal officials acknowledged that U.S. businessman David Coleman Headley, who supposedly confessed to being a terrorist scout in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, was working as a DEA informant while training with terrorists in Pakistan. "Federal officials, who spoke only only on background because of the sensitivity of the Headley case, also said they suspect a link between Headley and the al Qaeda figures whose activities have sparked recent terror threats against Europe," reports Pro Publica, an independent, non-profit newsroom that produces investigative journalism.

A World Made by War

Common Dreams

When you look at me, you can't mistake the fact that I'm of a certain age.  But just for a moment, think of me as nine years old.  You could even say that I celebrated my ninth birthday last week, without cake, candles, presents, or certainly joy.

I've had two mobilized moments in my life.  The first was in the Vietnam War years; the second, the one that leaves me as a nine-year-old, began on the morning of September 11, 2001.  I turned on the TV while doing my morning exercises, saw a smoking hole in a World Trade Center tower, and thought that, as in 1945 when a B-25 slammed into the Empire State Building, a terrible accident had happened.

The Bernanke Speech

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 03:12 AM PDT

When Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke gives a speech about the U.S. economy, it gets a whole lot more attention than when Barack Obama gives a speech about the U.S. economy.  Why is this true?  Well, it is because Bernanke has a whole lot more control over the U.S. economy than Obama does. It is the Federal Reserve that controls monetary policy and interest rates. It is the Federal Reserve that can create money out of thin air. It is the Federal Reserve which is going to have the most influence over whether there will be inflation or deflation. So when Bernanke gives a speech, world financial markets listen. On Friday, news of the Bernanke speech sent gold and silver soaring towards new highs and send the U.S. dollar tumbling once again.  This new Bernanke speech was yet another very strong indication that Helicopter Ben is getting ready to fire up the printing presses in an attempt to get the U.S. economy moving.

Electoral Coup d'Etats

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 02:39 AM PDT

steve lendmanThey're commonplace in developing countries in different forms, at times through what Edward Herman calls "Demonstration Elections," the title of his 1980 book on sham ones in the Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Vietnam. They also occur regularly in countries like Egypt, where for the past 20 years president Hosni Mubarak has gotten around 98% of the vote when he runs. Sadam's Iraq, much of the Middle East, and elsewhere work the same way, holding mock elections pretending to be real, while in the West, especially America, real elections are, in fact, mock ones.

Inside Story - Has multiculturalism failed in Germany?

Speaking to a meeting of young members of her Christian Democratic Union party on Saturday, the German chancellor Angela Merkel said attempts to build a multicultural society in Germany have "utterly failed". What is causing this rise in anti-immigrant feeling? Should immigrants be forced to better integrate, and will it make any difference?

The Iranian dilemma

Bruce Riedel, a senior fellow at Brookings, wrote in the Nixon Centre's "National Interest" last month that an Israeli attack on Iran would be catastrophic. Who Destroyed the 9/11 Evidence?

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 12:57 AM PDT

During the past month I have been involved in research about the people involved in the Rothschild/Mossad network behind the criminal destruction of the steel from the World Trade Center.  I have found that the network that arranged for the destruction of the steel - critical evidence from the crime scene - was organized by Israel's Mossad and their Zionist agents, the real culprits behind the false-flag terrorism that changed the world.  This article will be the final and conclusive chapter of my book, Solving 9/11 - The Deception that Changed the World.

Trudeau's War Measures Act: A Reminiscence

Posted: 17 Oct 2010 11:00 PM PDT

On Friday, Oct. 16, 1970, I woke up at about 7:00 a.m. and turned on the radio. At the time, I was living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The news I heard shocked me. In the middle of the night, Canada's Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau had invoked the War Measures Act. What was that? I had never heard of it. The radio announcer explained that by invoking this law, Trudeau had given himself the power to arrest anyone he wished and to hold any people he wished in jail indefinitely without charging them with a crime.

My thoughts on Trudeau's invocation of the War Measures Act are relevant today because of what I learned from this: that my instinctive distrust of government officials who claim vast discretionary powers over their citizens is likely to be justified.

Declassified Statement on Jonathan Pollard by Caspar W. Weinberger

Posted: 17 Oct 2010 11:00 PM PDT

Editor's note: The following statement (original format [.pdf]) was submitted to the District Court of the District of Columbia on March 3, 1987, by the former secretary of defense one day before Judge Aubry E. Robinson Jr. sentenced Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard to life in prison. Weinberger submitted a 46-page classified declaration ("in camera") of damage caused by Pollard in January 1987 (upon which this unclassified declaration was based). It has never been fully declassified. Explanatory links provided by Grant F. Smith.

I am Caspar W. Weinberger, Secretary of Defense. I offer this declaration to supplement my in camera submission, which detailed the nature and extent of the harm defendant has caused to our national security, and to make known to the Court additional facts which have been brought to my attention. I also wish to address the defendant's self-serving contentions [.pdf] that his espionage activities were intended only to aid Israel, and the suggestion that his actions should be viewed as mere technical violations of laws intended to keep sensitive information from actual or potential enemies.

Time to break up too-big-to-fail banks?

Posted: 17 Oct 2010 10:33 PM PDT

Looming losses from the mortgage scandal dubbed "foreclosuregate" may qualify as the sort of systemic risk that, under the new financial reform bill, warrants the breakup of the too-big-to-fail banks. The Kanjorski amendment allows federal regulators to pre-emptively break up large financial institutions that-for any reason-pose a threat to U.S. financial or economic stability.

Jim Traficant can win in Ohio

Posted: 17 Oct 2010 09:27 PM PDT

Jim Traficant's 2010 congressional race is arguably the nation's most important election, and that is why "they" totally ignore it—to make sure the American people, especially the good folks in Ohio's 17th district in Youngstown, don't even know "Big Jim" is running.

You may ask if doing the right thing is even a factor in American elections anymore.

Lobbyists Killed Jobs Bill

Posted: 17 Oct 2010 09:27 PM PDT

A SERIES OF MAINSTREAM MEDIA reports have revealed how the U.S. Chamber of Commerce recently mobilized its army of lobbyists to fight Senate legislation that would bring once-outsourced jobs back home to the U.S.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit 501(c)(6) that purportedly works to promote businesses and jobs in America. Today, however, the organization is increasingly coming under fire for backing multinational corporations and the outsourcing of American jobs to third world countries. The bill in question was the Creating American Jobs and End Offshoring Act (S. 3816), sponsored by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.).

'Foreclosuregate' and the President's Pocket Veto

Posted: 17 Oct 2010 09:27 PM PDT

Amid a snowballing foreclosure fraud crisis, President Obama on Oct. 7 blocked legislation that could have made it more difficult for homeowners to challenge foreclosure proceedings against them. In a maneuver known as a "pocket veto," Obama indirectly vetoed the legislation by declining to sign the bill passed by Congress while the legislators were on recess.

Mr. Obama's action follows an announcement that Wall Street banks are voluntarily suspending foreclosure proceedings in 23 states. It seems voluntary suspension of foreclosures is under way to review simple procedural errors that the conscientious banks are allegedly hastening to correct.

Treason by Members of the United States Congress

Posted: 17 Oct 2010 08:14 PM PDT

It must have been realised that the letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, signed by nearly 300 members of the US Congress, affirming their commitment to Israel, would be widely publicised and fall into the hands of that illegal Apartheid State, so the writing and signing of that letter should be considered an act of treason. The letter has totally undermined the power of the President of the United States by virtually telling Israel: "It does not matter what you do to the Palestinians, how many illegal structures you build on the territory you stole from them; how you behave towards the Lebanese, or what you have in mind for Iran, we, the signatories on this letter are with you, all the way." I am not a citizen of the United States, I am a citizen of a world that is being ruined by Zionism and its practitioners' thirst for power and greed for land that does not rightly belong to them. Having goaded the United States to attack Iraq, it is now attempting to draw it into a pre-emptive attack on Iran, while continuing to lie about the reason. The Iranian president did not threaten to "Wipe Israel off the map". Juan Cole, a professor of Middle Eastern studies at University of Michigan who reads Persian, has explained that President Ahmadinejad actually stated (quoting the late Ayatollah Khomeini): "The Imam said that this regime occupying Jerusalem (een rezhim-e ishghalgar-e qods) must [vanish from] from the page of time (bayad az safheh-ye ruzgar mahv shavad)."

This story is from 2009 I believe, but I only came across this Youtube clip a moment ago. A Hasidic Jew police officer (the first and hopefully the last in New York) abuses a white woman on the New York subway and a witness confirms this to be the case. What does the Jew do? He pleads antisemitism. What a lying, misogynistic piece of shit he is. Was he suspended? Of course not. Suspending a Jew for their bad working practices is contrary to US law which dictates that Jews must always be absolved from everything.

Circumcision is a Real Killer in America

Posted: 17 Oct 2010 07:03 PM PDT

I can't help being a little obsessed over the fact that more than 100 American male children die every year from being circumcised. We are one of the only news agencies that ever writes about the dark side of this unnatural mutilation process.

A study published last April; Thymos: Journal of Boyhood Studies, estimates that over 100 baby boys die from circumcision complications every year. These deaths are attributed to anesthesia reaction, stroke, hemorrhage, and infection. All infant circumcision is considered 'elective', which is ridiculous on one hand considering that the individual's choice is based on their parent's consent. At any rate, all of these deaths are avoidable.

Sunday: 17 Iraqis Killed, 16 Wounded

Another dramatic gold store robbery occurred in Baghdad today. Authorities believe that insurgents are attacking gold and jewelry stores in order to support their activities. At least 17 Iraqis were killed and 16 more were wounded there and across northern Iraq. Also, Awakening Council leaders are denying reports that hundreds of their fighters have defected to al-Qaeda.

In Baghdad, 12 Iraqis were killed and at least two others were wounded in a coordinated heist at three gold/jewelry stores in Mansour. Separately in Mansour, two sticky bombs killed two people. A blast in Bayaa killed a driver and wounded two others. Three people were wounded, including a doctor, in a blast in Karrada. In al-Mechanic, a blast killed an Industry Ministry employee and wounded two bystanders. Also, Interior Ministry personnel are apparently still using a controversial and completely ineffective bomb detector at checkpoints in the capital.

Murdoch: 'Israel and Jews under attack'

"It is essential that the sufferings of Jews become worse. This will assist in realization of our plans (a Zionist state). I have an excellent idea. I shall induce anti-Semites to liquidate Jewish wealth. The anti-Semites will assist us thereby in that they will strengthen the persecution and oppression of the Jews. The anti-Semitism shall be our best friends," from Theodor Herzl's Diary, Part 1, p.16.

On October 13, 2010 – one of the most powerful Israel Lobby groups, and Jewish Supremacist organization, Anti-Defamation League (ADL) honored the mainstream media tycon, the billionaire Rupert Murdoch – for his "stalwart support of Israel and his commitment to promoting respect and speaking out against anti-Semitism".

West of the 'Auschwitz borders'

Posted: 17 Oct 2010 05:38 PM PDT

Not long ago, during a meeting with foreign reporters, Avigdor Lieberman quoted a statement made by Abba Eban - who described the 1967 borders as "Auschwitz borders." Immediately afterward, the foreign minister presented the "plan" to move territories west of those "Auschwitz borders" so they would be under the jurisdiction of a foreign element (namely, the Palestinians ) which, he claimed, seeks to throw the Jews into the sea. In order to be rid of the Arab population in Israel in return for annexing the "settlement blocs," Lieberman proposes contracting Israel's narrow waist even further.

Turkish citizens find new ways to deal with regime's tyranny

Posted: 17 Oct 2010 05:38 PM PDT

Turkey (AP)

Turkey for beginners is filled with endless surprises. One, which you won't find in the travel guides, is well-known citizens' participation in acts of civil disobedience. These are people who do not allow their respectable status to deter them from being brought to trial for violating the law (alongside Kurds, Armenians and left-wing activists). Isn't it inevitable that a law meant to suppress will be violated? Is this not a civic duty when the law perpetuates privileges?

Yes indeed, show us all the map!

Better late than never, a very senior Palestinian official in Ramallah, Yasser Abed Rabbo, found the right way to challenge Israel and the U.S. As reported by AFP on 13 October, he said, "We officially demand that the US administration and the Israeli government provide a map of the borders of the state of Israel which they want us to recognise."

That's a completely logical and totally reasonable demand.

The art of black propaganda

Posted: 17 Oct 2010 02:08 PM PDT

Of course, while governments in parts of the world steeped in political conflict that turns to bloodshed with sickening frequency have every right to be wary of organisations dominated by political foes, closing a journalists' union is a risky business. The media plays an important role in the Israel-Palestine conflict, where it is dominated by a pro-Israel lobby with influence around the world. It is essential for a more balanced picture to emerge for there to be a vibrant media in the areas controlled by Palestinians.

Dirty War in Afghanistan

Posted: 17 Oct 2010 01:54 PM PDT

On the morning of Dec. 30, 2009, I listened in disbelief as an NPR "terrorism" expert disingenuously explained how the suicide bombing that killed seven CIA employees in Afghanistan was especially hideous, because the CIA victims were spreading economic development and democracy through a Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT).

CIA Director Lou Panetta issued a statement saying, "Those who fell yesterday were far from home and close to the enemy, doing the hard work that must be done to protect our country from terrorism." President Obama likewise glorified the CIA officers, calling them "part of a long line of patriots who have made great sacrifices for their fellow citizens, and for our way of life."

When will this conspiracy of silence end?

Posted: 17 Oct 2010 01:30 PM PDT

The recent and latest - but probably not the last - images of prisoners being abused by Israeli soldiers showed a blindfolded Palestinian woman trying desperately to avoid 21st century brutality in a prison cell with neither bars nor windows. As the seconds ticked by like an eternity it was clear that her body was trying to shrink into itself to avoid the monsters of the modern age, in the land of Jesus Christ, who danced around their victim.

Were the soldiers dancing to celebrate the kidnapping of an Arab girl whose only crime was to struggle for freedom from an illegal occupation? Or were they dancing to celebrate the fact that the international conscience, so vociferous about freedom and human rights in other parts of the world, is so very quiet when it comes to the Palestinians who have been oppressed by Western-backed Israel for more than sixty years?

Engaging the Middle East - after the Cairo speech

Posted: 17 Oct 2010 12:15 PM PDT

As an American, I look at the results of U.S. policies in the Middle East and they remind me of the T-shirt someone once gave me. It said: "Sinatra is dead. Elvis is dead. And me, I don't feel so good."

The Middle East is a constant reminder that a clear conscience is usually a sign of either a faulty memory or a severe case of arrogant amorality. It is not a badge of innocence. These days, we meticulously tally our own battlefield dead; we do not count the numbers of foreigners who perish at our hands or those of our allies. Yet each death is a tragedy that extinguishes one soul and wounds others. This deserves our grief. If we cannot feel it, we may justly be charged with inhumanity.

ADL on the Defensive. Nonviolent Revolution for Palestine Deepens

Posted: 17 Oct 2010 12:04 PM PDT

The Arab Defamation League (A.K.A. as Anti-Defamation league of Bnai Brith) is an American Zionist organization which focuses on defending Israeli apartheid policies even when those are harming Jews.  ADL just named the top ten groups in the US that they say are most organized in their "anti-Israel" stances in the US.  I am proud to have been a co-founder of one of those organizations and to have served on the board of two others as well actively involved in supporting five others (via donations, consulting, advise etc).

I of course do not agree with ADL on anything including on the idea of measuring impact of particular organizations (I believe grassroot work is critical).  For example, some organizations like the Council For National Interest have significant impact while remaining out of the limelight and also one would have to point out that different time frames in the life of one organization (and longevity) should be taken into consideration. I had my own run-in's with the ADL.  Many years ago we even held a demonstration in front of their offices in Connecticut. They did me the honor of writing a report targeting me personally as well as targeting my employer (Yale University at the time) to pressure them about having me on their medical school faculty.  In other words, yes, I think those organizations mentioned by ADL (and those not mentioned but doing similar things) should be proud and redouble their efforts to challenge Israeli apartheid in the US.

Winning The Currency War: The Unleasing of a "Financial Nuclear War"

Posted: 17 Oct 2010 10:11 AM PDT

In the same way that the American people were dragged into invading Afghanistan and Iraq on the promise of victory (Bush's Mission Accomplished), Wall Street will do likewise in launching this unprecedented financial war on the promise that they will come out the victors!

The propaganda has already commenced. The Financial Times, one of the leading mouth-pieces of the financial establishment has declared victory even before the launch of the first WMD. To quote Martin Wolf:

"To put it bluntly, the US wants to inflate the rest of the world, while the latter is trying to deflate the US. The US must win, since it has infinite ammunition: there is no limit to the dollars the Federal Reserve can create. What need to be discussed are the terms of the world's surrender".

"Obama Wars": Woodward's Ominous Narrative on the Af-Pak War

Posted: 17 Oct 2010 09:44 AM PDT

Bob Woodward's book "Obama Wars" in general offers an account of President Barack Obama's national security team's flawed decision-making practices, yet there is malicious intent behind raising the points of Quetta Shura, Haqqani network in North Waziristan, and ISI's support to the Taliban. Even if one presumes that there is some truth in these allegations, it is not understandable as to why hundreds of CIA agents and Blackwater mercenaries who are running around in FATA and Balochistan have not been able to either arrest or kill the top Taliban and Al Qaeda leaders despite the fact they are equipped with sophisticated equipment and gadgetry. Osama bin Laden may be dead or may have been killed a long time ago, but the US wants to keep him 'alive' so that it can use it as justification for its presence in the region and advancing its global interests. In Bob Woodward's book 'The Obama Wars', the author wrote: "Once Zalmay Khalilzad brushed off Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari's claim that the US was arranging the (suicide) attacks by Pakistani Taliban inside his country, as madness, and was of the view that both Zardari and Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who believed in this US conspiracy theory, were dysfunctional leaders".

On the Edge with Max Keiser-Economic Fraud

Posted: 17 Oct 2010 08:19 AM PDT

This program centers on fraudulent acts in the economy. The US bankers are resorting to every effort to make money out of thin air. They are blamed for manipulating interest rates so they would pocket the highest amount of money from the market. Reports indicate that more than 70 percent of the US wealth is in control of merely one percent of that society. It is on interest that people are so upbeat about the system that they do not believe such schemes are ongoing. Filthy politics has also a key role in deteriorating economy. They refuse to revaluate their currencies in order to wage wars and keep their economy up, at least in appearance. The best solution is said to be a return to the gold value system. Waiting on America

Less than a month after it was revived the Israel-Palestinian peace process is dead. The challenge now is how to defer the burial until after the mid-term US Congressional elections on 2 November.

This, in effect, was the meaning of the Arab League meeting in Libya on 8 October. Foreign ministers from 13 Arab states endorsed the Palestinian position of not continuing direct negotiations with Israel without an end to new settlement building in the West Bank. But they also bowed to American pressure to allow another month of diplomacy to try to resolve the issue.

Hamid Gul – Zionists' new 'Sopranos'

Posted: 16 Oct 2010 05:29 PM PDT

Lt. Gen. Gul Hamid, the former Chief Spy of Pakistan's intelligence Agency, ISI, – was the first intelligence officer who blamed the US government and Israeli Mossad for executing the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the US. Since then, the Jewish-controlled western mainstream media has portrayed him as "the most dangerous man". Lately, he is being equated to Tony Sopranos, the Italian crime mafia head in the TV series The Sopranos. Jewish actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler (born 1981) as Meadow Sopranos. She visited Israel in 2008 and called the Zionist occupied entity as "one of the most beautiful, inspiring places" she has ever visited.

It was the Zionist Jew columnist of the Washington Post, Jeff Stein, who bestowed on Gul Hamid the title of Tony Sopranos. Gul Hamid should count his blessings – he was not called "Hitler" as the Nazi-collaborting Jews did to Iranian President Dr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Top 10 anti-Israel groups in US

"While there are hundreds of groups that organize and participate in various anti-Israel activities, we have identified the largest and most well-coordinated anti-Israel groups. These groups are not promoting peace, they are spreading propaganda to assault Israel's legitimacy. We want to Americans to know who these groups are and what it is they really stand for, which is to delegitimize the Jewish state," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director.

The Hidden Slavery of Interest

Most advanced political and economic debate is dominated by the Americans. Through films like Zeitgeist Addendum , The Money Masters and Money as Debt , and books like those of Thomas Greco and Ellen Brown. They have been enormously important contributions to the awakening of the many (including myself!) towards the most pressing problem of our time, our monetary "system."

The one notable exception is interest. Of course all the aforementioned sources have dealt with interest, but to my mind there has been no really comprehensive and satisfactory analysis of interest in the Anglo Saxon world. In fact, most analysts concentrate on the fact that money is debt. There seems to be some kind of consensus that debt is the heart of the issue. But it is not. Without interest, debt would not be a problem, as I worked out here .
