Has Shane Dawson Jumped the Shark On Youtube?

Jumping The Shark: The point when a television series begins to decline and has run it's course and is relying on gimmicks, odd storylines or replacing characters.

First off, I am not slamming Shane Dawson. I do think he is talented, but I am starting to grow weary of the reliance on tastless sex jokes that have become the stock in trade for most of what Shane has been posting on Youtube. Sure, some of what he says in his videos is funny, but some of the "jokes" wear thin. I rarely post any of Shane's videos here because a lot of what he says is in such poor taste. Another point is that a massive part of the audience are very young and really don't need to hear that stuff. I'm not trying to "protect their tender ears" as most people (even the very young) hear lots of swearing and crude language, but some of it is not for the very young.

In the video below he shoots his "grandmother" and blood gushes from her mouth and there's an impromptu sexual encounter. That, I didn't find too funny. Most of what is supposed to be "funny" is just there for the shock value - and most of it is just the same recycled humor and variations on the same jokes Shane has been using for a long time now.



Don't get me wrong, I'm not an old fart with no sense of humor. I love great fart jokes and sex jokes. Most of the jokes in this video barely registered a smile let alone a laugh. The problem is that his jokes aren't very clever. Sex jokes work best as a sort of garnish. Sprinkled liberally through a scene. Shane wields them like a club and relies on them way, way too much to be effective.

Shane Dawson Has Hit A Plateau On Youtube

In 2009-2010, Shane Dawson was all over Youtube. He was THE rising star getting 10s of thousands of new subscribers every week. If you take a look at what TheWillofDC was saying at the time in his videos, Dawson was gunning for the top spot as most subscribed on Youtube. So what happened? Shane made all the way to 3rd spot in the most subscribed list (which he still holds), but the number of new subs has slowed.

Back in July 2010 ShaneDawsonTV had 1,656,057 subscribers and today his main channel has 2,281,256 for a gain of 625,199 which is excellent. That's about 90,000 a month. Many would kill for those numbers. Meanwhile, Ray William Johnson had about 1,500,000 subscribers last July and now is closing in on 3 million subs and Ryan Higa's top spot (he should take it in May 2011), so Ray has taken the crown as "The Rising Star of Youtube". Actually, Shane's main channel is getting new subscribers slower than 6 others in the top ten. Smosh is about 100,000 behind Shane and will probably pass him around July or August. Even Fred is starting to catch up.

There is some good news because Shane has 2 other channels in the Top 100 most subscribed list, his ShaneDawsonTV2 and his iphone channel called shane. According to the website myu2b.com, all 3 channels get a total of about 1.3 million views each day (which is phenomenal) most people are not watching his main channel. For someone with 2 million subs, he is not getting as many views as others with comparative audiences.

Why Don't You Start An iPhone Channel?

Also, half of his views are on his iPhone channel where he posts short little clips and teasers. If you are thinking about doing this Youtube thing, you might want to consider doing the same thing - several prominent Youtubers are making bank and getting tons of views by doing this sort of thing with a 2nd or 3rd channel. A little extra promotion doesn't hurt - just sayin'.

So, Has Shane Dawson "Jumped The Shark?"

It's hard to say for sure. Yes, he's still getting a lot of views and according to that website I mentioned above he's making somewhere around $1,400/daily gross across all three channels (those numbers are of course simply estimates). But he is relying on the same jokes and not really growing his audience as much as he could.

He seems to be running in place which if he is generating $1,400 a day is a nice place to stay running in, but if you are not moving forward, you risk slipping back. Youtube is littered with channels that were successful at one time but now hardly anyone watches them.

In case you've never seen the episode of Happy Days where the Fonzie (Henry Winkler) actually jumps the shark, the clip is shown below. Happy Days was a monster hit in the mid-to-late 70s and it started using lame gimmicks and storylines that made it less relevent.



The actor who played the ultra-cool Fonzie, Henry Winkler has had quite the career after leaving Happy Days as both a producer and as an actor. He appeared in several episodes of the series Arrested Development, and in one scene he made an inside joke as he jumped a dead shark lying on a pier. Finally...

One good point about Shane's channel is that he does have a solid base of fans who love everything he puts out and watch eagerly. Getting to the point where your subscribers reach a critical mass is difficult to do, and the next step is to try to increase that group of viewers. I don't see ShaneDawsonTV getting many more subs, except those who are newbs to Youtube.

Also, using vulgar language to try to shock your audience only works for a while before the offensiveness of the words is all you are left with. If you hear the same language over and over, the shock wears off, the lack of cleverness is revealed, and people move on. Is that happening to Shane Dawson now?

What Is The Tobuscus Audience Doing In James Cameron's Pocket?

If you follow Toby Turner (aka tobuscus) on Youtube you will notice that his audience finds itself in all sorts of awkward places at the start of his videos, but I don't know if we have ever been in an odd spot like the pocket of director James Cameron before. And what the heck is Tobuscus doing hanging around with the famous director of Titanic and Avatar?



If you follow Toby Turner on Twitter, or any number of the other bigname youtubers like Phil DeFranco, MysteryGuitarMan, Nigahiga, you would have seen that they tweeted about meeting Cameron and Olga Kay and Shane Dawson tweeted pictures with him. It sounds like it was a pretty cool night. If you want to follow James Cameron on Twitter, he is @JimCameron. He just started tweeting on Friday and he's already got 35,000-plus followers. I took a look at some of the people Cameron is following and he started following actor Tom Arnold before he followed Barack Obama - how does Arnold rate that? lol.

You can always count on Olga to get a picture or video of stuff like this. She filmed a bit of her conversation with James Cameron where they talk about her being a juggler and coming to the U.S. Just wish she had gotten a little bit more.

Ask Shane Dawson About Sponge Bob Footy Pajamas

Yes, it looks like Shane Dawson enjoys dressing up in kiddie PJs as he starts this episode of "Ask Shane" decked out in Spongebob Squarepants footy pajamas (as any well-adjusted 22-year-old would do). This is a good clip as we see Shane and the lovely Juicystar07 on the road to Dollywood.



But, then Shane's camera runs out of juice. Which is too bad because it would have been interesting to see Shane's reaction to Dollywood, which is a tribute to the legendary country music star Dolly Parton. Dolly being well-known for besides being an enormously talented singer, being enormously... um, well-proportioned?

Sometimes I just dunno what to make of Shane Dawson lol. This is Shane doing a "Harry Potter" rap for the folks over at take180com (aka Electric Spoofaloo).



And, yes, that's Shane as Hermione Granger - odd that he always chooses the female roles lol. Wonder what all the little Harry Potter freaks will think about this?

And, just in case you are one of the few who hasn't seen the Harry Potter video Shane made back in July 2009 with Brittani Louise Taylor. Actually, I think this was the first video I noticed Brittani in and a year later, she's got 622K subscribers and is number 37 on the Most Subscribed Chart. If you do watch the following clip, Shane's got a little bit of a potty mouth, but you already knew that.



I think that has to be just about one of my favorite Shane Dawson video of all time lol. I laugh just about every time I see the look on Ginny Weasley's (Brittani) face as she looks down in shock when Harry (Shane) drops his pants. Also I think that might have been the first time Shane mentioned his virginity in one of his videos.

2010 Supernote Winners! Team Beard Wins By A Whisker

The tabulations are done, and the results are in. According to Rhett&Link's website, the winners are: Team Beard! Congrats to Wheezy Waiter and his team of beardlovers who dethroned last year's champs, Shay Carl and the Shaytards Rebellionites. It turned out to be super-close.

Shane Dawson's Furry Halloween

So, what do famous youtubers do for Halloween? They get dressed up as a crocodile if you're Shane Dawson and head over to his friend Bree's house where we find Brittani Louise Taylor looking good in her pirate costume and Olga Kay as a cow lol. Shane's doing an episode of "Ask Shane" with all these fellow youtubers.



As a canadian, I do have to take exception to Shane calling out Nadine for being from Canada. She's from Vancouver and is Olga's roommate for a month or two. Yes, some of us do say "aboot" as in "no dowt aboot it" but "y'all" goin' have to deal wid it lol. And poutine rocks!

And had to laugh at Shane dancing with Barney. Something a little creepy about that scene. Loved that line "I feel like I'm in a Tyler Perry movie with that laugh" when Jess started cackling hysterically.

All through the video Shane was answering questions left by his viewers, so make sure you post a question for him on his video and maybe he'll answer it next time.

Olga Kay Pranks Shane Dawson

It's a little midnight pranking for Olga Kay as she gets ready for a visit from Shane Dawson.



The other two girls are Olga's roommate, Nadine and Jess (aka ExoticJess on YouTube) and they've decided to play a song that Shane apparently hates called We No Speak Americano. Just in case you have never seen the video for the song, it is shown below. And pick it up on iTunes.



But that's not all that happened, as later it looks like Shane and Olga plan on pranking Nadine. This video was posted on Shane's iPhone channel so you might want to check that out as well.

Brittani Louise Taylor's Ecomagination Backyard Camping Adventure

Going camping is always fun and there's always something happening that is unplanned and when Brittani Louise Taylor decides to take on one of the Ecomagination challenges suggested by her viewers by camping in her friend's backyard, there are some mishaps.



It's kinda funny when you find out that someone who you are subbed to on YouTube is friends with someone else you have subscribed to on the website. I've been subbed to Brigitte Dale for quite some time and had no idea that she was friends with Brittani Louise Taylor until this video. You should sub to her too because she's a wee bit quirky and puts up some interesting videos. Brittani and Brigette decide to camp in (I'm guessing) Brigette's backyard along with Shane Dawson and Joey Anderton, but first they have to assemble the tent and that didn't go quite as smoothly as you would think.

Plus there was the added problem of sprinklers going off and the girls and the tent got soaked. Typical hardships most campers would face lol. But they survived the wilds of the backyard and completed another Go Green challenge for Ecomagination.

Shane Dawson Takes His Family To Disney World

Shane Dawson has decided to treat his family to a day at Disney World and filmed them meeting various characters and going on some rides. Shane proposes to Minnie Mouse, but it looks like she won't be there for the ceremony. He also has something of an awkward moment with Donald Duck and Pluto is a little bit frisky in the restaurant.

The best part has to be Shane's mom's reaction to the Beverley, a cola drink that Shane brings her to imbibe. Be sure to try it the next time you are at Disney World.

And don't forget that he is also planning on giving away that Mickey Mouse ears hat that he signed on the back. Just leave a comment on his video about what your favorite vacation moment with your own family was and Shane will decide which one he liked best and you get the ears.

A Sleepy John Green Admits He Likes Balls

John Green of the vlogbrothers is a little jetlagged from a long, long trip to Munich. It took only the blink of an eye in the video, but trust me, it's a lengthy trip and poor John got no sleep. Probably reminding him of VidCon when he still stayed up for an extended period on BlogTV trying to whip up the Nerdfighter community to vote for the Harry Potter Alliance so they can do good things with the proceeds with the $250,000 prize being offered by Chase Community Giving challenge on Facebook.

And yes, all that hard work paid off as HPA went over the top while John tirelessly promoted the cause, getting viewers of the vlogbrothers to take action and get friends and family to vote for them. You can read about them winning at their website: thehpalliance.org.

John also mentions that he will be heading over to London, England and then Edinburgh, Scotland next month (August 14th - London, the 15th - Edinburgh).

"Shane Dawson signed my balls!"

I liked his point about Hank (the other vlogbrother in case you didn't know) not making the title of his video "Shane Dawson signed my balls!" just to garner gratuitous views from the curious. In case you missed Hank's video, he showed off a couple of balls that Shane had signed for him from the ball pit at VidCon that you see John leaping into at the start of the video.

I didn't realize that John had a blog (well DUH, Bradshaw). John's a published author and it only makes sense that he would have some excess words for his readers as well as viewers from YouTube. Ask Shane Dawson About Pokemon & ijustine

In this edition of "Ask Shane", Shane Dawson dons a Pikachu costume in order to answer view questions and dance. Do you know all the words to the Pokemon song? I've never watched any TV show about them so that leaves me out.

One of the question from one of Shane's viewers was: "Who would you marry, f**K, and kill out of the choices of joenationtv, brittanilouisetaylor and ijustine. You have to watch the video to find that out. We did learn one very important lesson from this video though... do NOT make ijustine mad.

Brittani Louise Taylor & Shane Dawson Q & A At VidCon

Check out BrittaniLouiseTaylor who has 470,897 YouTube subscribers and is the 44th most subbed youtuber answering some questions about herself and her channel on YouTube. According to Brittani, she was on YouTube for about 3 years before she finally took off. I first spotted her in a few of Shane Dawson's videos before he really took off and finally broke down and subbed to the cupcake queen a while back. If you watch Brittani, you know that she is a genuine nutbar and interesting youtuber.

Speaking of Shane Dawson, he joins Brittani in the video below to answer a few questions from the audience. In case you don't follow Shane, I'll put a link to his main channel after the video. Actually you were probably auto-subbed to Shane Dawson when you created your YouTube channel (kidding), because Dawson is one of the most wildly followed youtubers going. He rocketed up the most subbed charts in a little over a year from about 14,000 subscribers to his current total of about 20 ga-zillion subs (actually Shane has 1,699,999 as of today).

Shane Dawson Wet The Bed (Again)

Here's Shane Dawson's latest. We start with Shane and Sha-nay-nay planning on bumpin' uglies until Shane spots her "roommates." Dawson then harkens back to his childhood when he used to sleep over at a friend's house. Poor Shane had what might be called a "small bladder problem." But the mind of Shane Dawson quickly comes to the rescue by blaming the family pet. Poptart is goin' bye-bye.
