European Union Military Committee Delegation Visits EU Navfor And Nato Headquarters in Northwood

On Thursday 30 September, EU NAVFOR and NATO welcomed a delegation from the European Union Military Committee (EUMC) in Northwood's headquarters (United Kingdom).

The aim of this visit was to give the delegation an update on the piracy threat in the Horn of Africa and to discuss the possible mechanisms to improve the actions of Task Force 465.

"To begin with, I would like to say that I am grateful, to the Operation Commander General Buster Howes for his courteous invitation, and to the Belgian Presidency for its contribution to the visit", comments General HÃ¥kan SYRÉN, chairman of the EUMC.

"I have to say, that today, we, not only the EU but also NATO Military Representatives and other officials from both organisations, had a very necessary and fruitful meeting concerning military cooperation and coordination off the coasts of Somalia. We received fresh information and we exchanged views, under a common way of thinking and acting.
....
This meeting was an opportunity for both EU and NATO to identify future challenges for these Task Forces, at both operational and strategic levels.

Polish DM: NATO Combines Wars Abroad, Article 5 In Europe

Poland pleased with NATO’s new look

-During his talks in Washington, the Polish Defense Minister discussed Polish-US cooperation in Afghanistan, where an American battalion is under Polish command. He said that the Americans had placed 60 MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protection) vehicles at Poland’s disposal so far, adding that “to our surprise they pledged to hand over 20 more such vehicles†.

Ahead of November’s NATO summit in Lisbon, Poland’s defence minister Bogdan Klich has said that a blueprint for a new strategic concept meets Polish expectations as it strengthens NATO’s traditional role of a defensive alliance.

Talking to reporters after his return from the United States, where he met with Secretary of Defence Robert Gates, Klich said that the Americans are trying to maintain a balance between NATO’s obligations to defend its members’ territories and the alliance’s expeditionary missions.

"[The concept] corresponds to our expectations. There are provisions in the project that reinforce the traditional character of the North Atlantic alliance, which means NATO remaining a defensive alliance," the minister said.

The November 19-21 summit will be dominated by four topics: adoption of a new Strategic Concept, Afghanistan, missile defences and NATO-Russian relations.

Mr Klich said that NATO’s new strategy was presented for consultation a few days ago. Its final shape, he added, can be changed during debate at various levels within NATO.

“There are countries which hold slightly different views than Poland but I wanted to show to the Americans that in our view no changes should be introduced to the existing draft on fundamental matters,†added Minister Klich.

During his talks in Washington, the Polish Defense Minister discussed Polish-US cooperation in Afghanistan, where an American battalion is under Polish command. He said that the Americans had placed 60 MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protection) vehicles at Poland’s disposal so far, adding that “to our surprise they pledged to hand over 20 more such vehicles†.

Asked whether he discussed with Defence Secretary Gates the date of withdrawal from Afghanistan, Mr Klich gave no answer.

Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said four days ago that Polish troops will not remain in Afghanistan beyond 2014.

The Polish contingent currently numbers 2,600 soldiers.

Ecuador mourns coup attempt victims

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa has declared three days of national mourning for the victims of last Thursday’s attempted coup.

Four people died and nearly 200 received injuries in a day of unrest after soldiers and police angered by pay cuts seized barracks and bases, blocked Quito Airport, injured the President and locked him up in military hospital. Mr Correa was eventually freed by loyal troops.

The authorities are after the masterminds of the mutiny.

NATO Reiterates Georgia Support

•Saakashvili: NATO remains a priority for Georgia

Tbilisi: During his visit in Tbilisi on October 1, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said he expected that the upcoming summit of NATO leaders in Lisbon would reiterate the decision of the 2008 Bucharest summit that Georgia will one day become a member of the alliance once Georgian fulfills the necessary criteria.

While reiterating NATO’s support to the non-recognition policy of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and calling on Russia to implement its commitments under the August 12, 2008 six-point cease-fire agreement, Rasmussen also said that it was his “clear intention†to improve ties between Moscow and NATO, “leading, hopefully, to true strategic partnership†.
....
Saakashvili, who described the Secretary General’s visit as “extremely important†, said “of course†NATO membership “stays a priority for the Georgian government.â€

“There is one thing Georgia can never compromise on â€" that’s the issue of freedom and for us and right now NATO stands for the idea of freedom and that’s why it has strong support of the Georgian nation and in overall of political spectrum in Georgia,†Saakashvili said.

He said that there were number of other issues where Georgia was “flexible†and “very open†, including in respect of engagement with Russia.

During the press conference, the NATO Secretary General expressed condolences over death of four Georgian soldiers in Afghanistan on September 30 and said: “Their sacrifice will not be in vain.â€
....
“I can assure you that NATO also stands firm in our commitment to Georgia,†he added.

Saakashvili said that Georgia would remain a committed member of the NATO-led coalition forces in Afghanistan.

“You should count on our support and we count on your further political support to our territorial integrity, our independence and to future development of my country,†Saakashvili told the NATO Secretary General.

As Afghan War Nears Tenth Year, NATO's 2010 Death Toll At 535

Foreign soldier killed in Afghan bomb attack

A foreign soldier was killed by an improvised bomb in southern Afghanistan Saturday, according to a statement from NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

ISAF's brief statement - following one earlier Saturday reporting the deaths of two soldiers in eastern Afghanistan in a similar attack on Friday - did not disclose the soldier's nationality, in keeping with NATO policy.

The latest deaths bring to 535 the number of international troops killed in the Afghan war so far this year, according to an AFP count based on a running tally kept by the icasualties.org website.

Improvised explosive devices (IEDs), a favoured weapon of Taliban-linked insurgents across Afghanistan, account for most of the deaths among foreign forces in the country.

This year's foreign military toll is the highest since the war began in 2001....

Last year, 521 foreign soldiers were killed in the Afghan war.

About 150,000 NATO and US troops are operating in Afghanistan, tasked with implementing a counter-insurgency strategy designed to reverse Taliban momentum and allow American forces to start drawing down in 2011.
