Gaza: a castle in the sand

Posted: 19 Sep 2010 08:22 AM PDT

Abu Raad's home is built of mud. Hewn from concrete splits, water and sand, the artifice is necessary because of an Israeli siege that bars all raw materials into the Gaza Strip. Abu Raad lost six houses when the Israeli army blitzed northern Gaza in operation Cast Lead in December 2008.

Fifty-two of his family ran for their lives, under Israeli fire, waving white flags. In 2006 18 others had been killed when a "stray" army shell smashed into an earlier home near the Israeli border, forcing the flight to northern Gaza.

Moment of reckoning

Posted: 19 Sep 2010 08:22 AM PDT

As US-brokered peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) get underway in Washington, most observers are reluctant to give them the benefit of the doubt given a long legacy of failure after many years of direct and indirect talks between the two sides, especially since the conclusion of the Oslo Accords nearly two decades ago. And while both sides are saying that they are going to the talks "with an open mind", it is clear that there is a little change -- if any -- in the declared positions of Israel and the PA on the basic contentious issues.

On the eve of the talks, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu continued to make largely propagandistic statements, saying he wished Israel would have a peace partner like former Egyptian president Anwar El-Sadat. This statement ignores the clear fact that the intensive building of Jewish settlements all over the West Bank, not the absence of Sadat on the Arab side, has been the main obstacle impeding resolution of the Palestinian cause.

Old-fashion imperialism

Posted: 19 Sep 2010 08:22 AM PDT

It is constantly repeated that Afghanistan has always been the graveyard of empires. There then follows a reminder of the annihilation of a British "army" in 1842 in the first Afghan war and of the defeat at Maiwand in 1880 in the second war. It follows that the British failed.

A closer look reveals a very different picture. First of all, for the first hundred years or so of their involvement in India the British had no noticeable Afghan policy. The two powers were too far apart to bother with one another. It was only in the early 19th century and the consolidation of the Indian empire that active relations began, simply because the British had extended their empire northwards and they became concerned about the Afghan habit of raiding south across the border into what had become British India.

Israeli intransigence is the only hope

Posted: 19 Sep 2010 08:22 AM PDT

What an irony that the Palestinians' archenemy, Israel, should also be their saviour. There is a real danger that the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks due to start 2 September in Washington could yield a botched deal that falls far short of the requirements of international law or elemental justice, and sets back the cause of Palestine for decades if not forever. Fortunately, this will not happen as long as Israel's obduracy can be relied on to save the Palestinians from such a dreadful outcome.

Time and again, when Israel was thrown a lifeline by its Arab neighbours that could have ensured its legitimacy and security, its folly and greed lost it those opportunities. But, since those same opportunities came at great cost to Palestinian rights, Israel's obduracy had the perverse effect of safeguarding them. All peace proposals after 1967 were based on maintaining Israel as a regional power and forcing the Palestinians to settle for less than they were entitled to. They were repeatedly offered paltry settlements that in effect legitimised Israel's hold on a majority of their land and undermined their right of return. Had Israel agreed, the Palestinian cause would have been lost long ago.

A fable for our times

Posted: 19 Sep 2010 08:22 AM PDT

The Palestinians' champion -- their White Knight -- is preparing to ride forth next week and do battle at the negotiating table with the racist regime's Black Knight and his minder, the Great Satan. The rules of chivalry don't apply, so the outcome is not in doubt.

However, the White Knight is not quite as white or brave as he seems. Eager to do his lord's bidding, Mahmoud Abbas is a willing fall guy. On this occasion Obama has imperiously snapped his fingers and announced he wants direct talks started "well before" the Black Knight (Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu) ends the partial freeze on illegal settlements in a month's time.

Lessons in Palestinian truth

Posted: 19 Sep 2010 08:22 AM PDT

Writers often romanticise their subjects. At times they even manipulate their readers. A book -- or any piece of writing for that matter -- is meant to provide a sense of completion. Sociological explanations are offered to offset the confusion caused by apparent inconsistency in human behaviour. At times a reader is asked to take a stance, or choose sides.

This is especially true in writings that deal with compelling human experiences. In Behind the Wall: Life, Love and Struggle in Palestine (Potomac Books, 2010), Rich Wiles undoubtedly directs his readers, although implicitly, towards taking a stance. But he is unabashed about his moral priorities and makes no attempt to disguise his objectives.

The price of peace

Posted: 19 Sep 2010 05:51 AM PDT

In an atmosphere of uncertainty, US President Barack Obama has thrown his whole weight behind re-launching direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians with the hope of reaching a settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict within one year. Standing by him are Egypt and Jordan, with President Hosni Mubarak sending a clear message to Arabs and Egyptians that despair and anger should not again undermine prospects for peace.

President Mubarak, in a lengthy article published in The New York Times, set out his vision for peace and the hurdles to be surpassed before reaching it. On the endpoint of negotiations, Mubarak said: "The broad parameters of a permanent Palestinian-Israeli settlement are already clear: the creation of a Palestinian state in the territories occupied by Israel in 1967 with Jerusalem as a capital for both Israel and Palestine." Among hurdles, Mubarak underlined the psychological factor between Israel and the Palestinians as the biggest obstacle to success of the peace process, adding that peace between the Palestinians and Israelis is linked to a comprehensive regional settlement.

Modern day Nazi? Anti-immigration wing gaining strength in Sweden

Sweden's holding general elections, with the ruling coalition expected to win most seats in the parliament. But a controversial far-right party is so far winning most of the headlines. The Sweden Democrats party demands sharp immigration cuts, saying it will ease the pressure on the country's welfare system. And with a real chance of them winning seats - some of the candidates have been attacked and others denied their right to free speech, as Laura Emmet reports from the city of Malmo.

False Flags Don't Fly Anymore

Those who have studied history know that nothing invigorates and empowers an authoritarian regime more than a spectacular act of violence, some sudden and senseless loss of life that allows the autocrat to stand on the smoking rubble and identify himself as the hero. It is at moments like this that the public—still in shock from the horror of the tragedy that has just unfolded before them—can be led into the most ruthless despotism: despotism that now bears the mantle of "security."

Acts of terror and violence never benefit the average man or woman. They only ever benefit those in positions of power.

Countdown to Sudan's referendum

Four months away from a scheduled referendum on self-determination, Sudan, Africa's largest country is at an historic crossroads.

In January, the people of south Sudan will choose whether to stay unified with the north or secede to create a new country roughly the size of Texas. This referendum, the cornerstone of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), which the two of us helped negotiate, was to be the pinnacle of a six-year process to make Sudan more democratic and peaceful.

The pitiful Zionist Federation: forever out of touch with reality

Posted: 19 Sep 2010 02:00 AM PDT

In a major step towards promoting justice and human rights, Britain's Trades Union Congress (TUC) voted this week in favour of a campaign to boycott companies that profit from Israel's illegal settlements. This is a very welcome and commendable decision which acknowledges the illegal nature of the settlements and the goods produced therein, as well as the harmful consequences of buying them in terms of the devastation that it wreaks on the Palestinian people. In an act of solidarity with the oppressed, reminiscent of the boycotting of South African goods during the apartheid era, the TUC is placing ethics over money.

Noam Chomsky and the pro-Israel lobby: Fourteen erroneous theses

Noam Chomsky has been called the US leading intellectual by pundits and even some sectors of the mass media. He has a large audience throughout the world especially in academic circles, in large part because of his vocal criticism of US foreign policy and many of the injustices resulting from those policies. Chomsky has nonetheless been reviled by all of the major Jewish and pro-Israel organizations and media for his criticism of Israeli policy toward the Palestinians even as he has defended the existence of the Zionist state of Israel.

How to spot an antisemtic hate crime hoax

Posted: 19 Sep 2010 12:28 AM PDT

PhotobucketWhat can be done about hoaxes? Probably very little as long as victimization claims are so uncritically accepted, and the payoff for alleged victimization is sufficiently tempting and rewarding. "Hate crime" legislation, although well-intentioned, has created a powerful market for the side benefits of alleged hate crimes. When these crimes are not naturally occurring, or are not occurring in sufficient numbers, a motive to commit hoaxes is created. Provisions in hate crime legislation for civil damages also creates a powerful motive to commit hoaxes.

It also tells about the massacre of Palestinians in Mosque that occurred ON PURIM when Goldstein shot down 40 worshippers as they prayed. Once again showing how these hateful rituals have an impact. In my radio broadcast I also quote Jewish writers saying that Purim shows how Jews have to wipe out not just the "anti-Semites" but their children as well, hence the many references to the ten sons of Haman. Relentless Propaganda

On July 4th 2006, I, and dozens of other antiwar activists began what we called: "Troops Home Fast." It was supposed to be a fast until the troops were coming home from Iraq (Note: After 39 days, I ended up in the hospital with another condition and I had to have two emergency surgeries and 2 blood transfusions, so I had to stop). So a few days after the fast began, I was invited to go on MSNBCs Hardball, and I was told I was invited so I could talk about our fast.

Well, instead of appearing with the juicy Chris Matthews, the guest host that day was neocon, Norah O'Donnell. She introduced me as the "woman who met with 'communist dictator,' Hugo Chavez of Venezuela." We went to a phony break (because the show is taped) and I said: "You know, Norah, Chavez is neither a communist—he's a socialist, nor a dictator. He's been democratically elected several times and survived a coup attempt orchestrated and paid for by our own government."

Almost every few weeks (or days, depending on the season), the following ceremony repeats itself in Palestinian villages around Nablus: A group of Israeli settlers from one of the outposts in the West Bank hills attacks Palestinian farmers while they are grazing sheep or working the fields, hoping to throw them off Palestinian land.

So we're back to Oslo?

A comprehensive and permanent solution is not possible under the current conditions, Yossi Beilin has said. His argument: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu does not want peace and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is unable to meet the Israeli conditions for peace. The solution, which has already become a political slogan: a long-term interim agreement.

There is a great deal of appeal to such a proposal, which dresses up as an appropriate and possible solution. What exactly is that interim agreement? To please Israel it will have to include an article allowing it to continue pouring cement and people into the West Bank and Jerusalem, refuse the return of all the Palestinian refugees and prevent the division of Jerusalem. And perhaps, if the two sides agree, it will include an empty statement about the establishment of a Palestinian state in the future. An interim agreement that does not include these elements will not reach the Knesset.

This is Army Radio

These were very distant, very different days; like all olden days, these days are etched into my memory and will never be forgotten. The building, already threatening to collapse back then, is the same building, the steps are the same ruined steps. Even the same clocks hang in the studios, as if to stay: Time stopped here.

It's the early, merry 1970s: A young man dreaming of becoming the prime minister or a journalist or whichever comes first, joins Army Radio. A journalist who would, in time, become controversial, begins to take shape in the warm, intoxicating, deceitful embrace of the establishment. This week, the Israeli anomaly of the world's weirdest radio station is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Time for memories and lessons.

That Irritating Photograph

Posted: 18 Sep 2010 06:32 PM PDT

Over the years, every time I have come across this historic photograph of Rabin and Arafat signing their 1993 accord, I find myself irritated by it. Why?

The problem is Bill Clinton, and the fact that I cannot help thinking this photograph was painstakingly planned and choreographed well in advance. I can imagine Clinton's advisers debating over what colour tie and suit he should wear, whose hand he should shake and in what order, where he should look and for how long, and what facial expression he should pull and for how long. Or maybe not — perhaps Clinton wholly or partly thought of it himself. All the same, the image looks very deliberately staged, consciously designed to be iconic, and amounts, therefore, to an insult to the viewer's intelligence.

Taxpayers funding Israeli database of American citizens

Posted: 18 Sep 2010 04:12 PM PDT

Never has a nation funded a foreign spy organization's efforts to catalog potential intelligence assets, operatives and, at the same time, take over the job of watching themselves.  This is one of the greatest intelligence coups in history.  Combine this with control of America's airport security and total control of America's communications networks, everything, mobile, internet, even landlines….we might as well pull down the flag and roll over.

Did you know that attending a meeting to organize a bake sale for new band uniforms can put you on a terrorist watch list?  You don't have to join a peace group or protest oil drilling to be considered dangerous.  The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania hired ITRR, the Instititute of Terrorism Research and Response, a Jerusalem based company owned by the Mossad and tied directly to the Israeli Ministry of Defense to track "dissidents" and "activists."  In the process, they managed to find the most dangerous terrorist organization of all, the governor's own non-profit organization, one supporting school funding initiatives.  From ITTR's website:

Trapped in the Spiral of Basel III. Tightening the Noose on Credit Spells Disaster

Posted: 18 Sep 2010 02:27 PM PDT

The stock market shot up on September 13, after new banking regulations were announced called Basel III.  Wall Street breathed a sigh of relief.  The megabanks, propped up by generous taxpayer bailouts, would have no trouble meeting the new capital requirements, which were lower than expected and would not be fully implemented until 2019.  Only the local commercial banks, the ones already struggling to meet capital requirements, would be seriously challenged by the new rules.  Unfortunately, these are the banks that make most of the loans to local businesses, which do most of the hiring and producing in the real economy.  The Basel III capital requirements were ostensibly designed to prevent a repeat of the 2008 banking collapse, but the new rules fail to address its real cause.

Xenophobia and Islamophobia in USA

Posted: 18 Sep 2010 02:19 PM PDT

Xenophobia is a fear or contempt of that which is foreign or unknown, especially of strangers or foreign people. It includes hatred of persons belonging to a different race, or different ethnic or national origin.

The fear or hatred that makes up xenophobia involves a great deal of generalizing about "others".

Unfortunately, if you develop a mindset about large numbers of people based on the actions of a few, you can treat whole populations badly.

Did Tony Blair endorse preventive war on Iran?

Posted: 18 Sep 2010 09:16 AM PDT

Political leaders often draw negative inferences from an adversary's conduct, without realizing that their own behavior is not really that different. In particular, an opponent's past actions is frequently invoked to demonstrate how aggressive/dangerous/hostile/unstable they are, but when one's own country (or a close ally) acts in the very same way, we are quick to find ways to rationalize or justify it and we would never conclude that we might be equally aggressive or irrational.

The Transparent Cabal

Posted: 18 Sep 2010 09:00 AM PDT

History is full of examples of a determined minority prevailing over a more passive majority. A case in point is the neoconservative effort to bring the United States into war with Iraq largely for the protection of Israel. Despite the dubious reasons the neoconservatives advanced — Iraq has WMDs, ties to al-Qaeda — they managed to overcome the resistance of the military, the State Department and CIA partly by infiltrating them for their own ends. As the book title suggests, much of this was done in the open, a transparent cabal.

The cabal is described in convincing detail by author Stephen Sniegosky, who, somewhat retiring, lets the neoconservatives tell much of it in their own words — and what words! full of the passion of their endeavor: "Creative destruction is our middle name:" "precise military action against Hezbollah and Syria for as long as it takes without regard to mindless blather about proportionality;" "There is no middle way for Americans. It is victory or the holocaust;" "Could World War Two have been won by Britain and the United States if the two countries did not have it in them to firebomb Dresden and nuke Hiroshima and Nagasaki — the willingness to inflict mass casualties on civilians?" Like Gaza? we might ask.

A bipartisan look at the Israel lobby

Posted: 18 Sep 2010 08:46 AM PDT

The Bipartisan Policy Center might claim to be bipartisan because it includes both Democrats and Republicans but that does not mean that it is objective.  Two years ago it produced a "task force" report on the Iranian threat called "Meeting the Challenge:  US Policy Toward Iranian Nuclear Development."  It concluded that Iran has no right to enrich nuclear fuel for any purpose and predicted that Tehran would have sufficient highly enriched uranium in one year's time to build a bomb.  It advocated talking to Tehran to give it a chance to surrender on all key issues before attacking it, urging newly elected but not yet inaugurated President Barack Obama to build up forces for the assault.  The task force recommended that the US military should, after bombing Iran into submission, remain in the area vigilant and ready to react to any possible attempt at retaliation by Tehran.

Strictly Scum Dancing

This video is meant to be a comedy more than anything else. It is not an easy task to learn about subjects like the new-world-order, secret societies, the manipulation of the people, and the horrendous acts carried out on the people of this world. Any ordinary person will naturally be horrified to learn of what is really going on in this world. It is natural to be fearful in light of this knowledge, but the last thing we should be is frightened. Fear is one of the many weapons they use to control us. If you fear these people then you are effectively worshipping them and making them even more powerful. We should refuse to be scared of these people... don't fall into their trap. Fear will only reduce your ability to rectify the situation. Once you know what they're trying to achieve, you can do something about it, which is a far better position to be in than sheer ignorance. Therefore we should laugh at people like Bush, Clinton and McCain. Laugh at the fact that their job is to be nothing more than a puppet. Laugh at the fact that they have to put on an act every minute of their public lives. Laugh at the fact that they have to pretend that they're something they're not. Laugh at the fact that they constantly fear being caught out and publically humiliated and disgraced. These people are scared of us finding out about their darstardly deeds, they have to go on TV and lie their asses off in order to fool the ever-decreasing section of society who haven't yet woken up.

Alarmists are once again trying to play God in a bid to solve an imaginary climate crisis based around their own fraudulent belief system, fully aware of the fact that the consequences of their actions will likely kill off millions in the third world, people who they see as nothing more than "useless eaters". Based around the madcap method of "injecting aerosols of sulfate into the stratosphere" to produce "a global sunshade," researchers at the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology have been running advanced trials on how to distribute artificially added sulfates to the atmosphere in the name of cooling the planet. A leading Iraqiya Party member today announced a deal that could finally break the elections deadlock paralyzing the Iraqi government. Influential Shi'ite cleric Abdel Mahdi al-Karbalai seemed to be referring to the deal when he told parishioners there were "signs of a breakthrough" and "glimmers of hope." Meanwhile, 10 Iraqis were killed and 20 more were wounded in the latest attacks. Also, an American soldier was killed in a non-combat incident in Iskandariya.

Aliya Nusseif, a leading member of the Iraqiya party, told reporters that Iraqiya is in the early stages of reaching a deal with the Iraqi National Alliance and the Kurdistan Alliance to select the new government. Under the agreement Adel Abdul-Mahdi would become prime minister, Ayad Allawi the president, and the Kurds would select the parliamentary speaker. The new coalition would reach 204 seats, which is more than the 163 seats needed to select the new government. It has been more than six months since the elections, but previous attempts to reach deals have failed.

Bashir Insanity

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 11:30 PM PDT

This past Tuesday, when the punditocracy was raptly focused on the electoral results in Delaware and New Hampshire, the U.S. State Department quietly issued a policy statement on Sudan that offered the government of President Omar Hassan al-Bashir a path to escape sanctions and restore normal relations with the United States.

Why no fanfare? Perhaps an administration highly sensitive to accusations of equivocation in the face of evil was reluctant to call attention to a policy that emphasized carrots rather than sticks -- or rather, to use the splendidly mangled metaphor of one administration official, offered to the regime in Khartoum "a carrot painted with a finer degree of granularity." Bashir, who has been indicted on genocide charges by the International Criminal Court, doesn't deserve a carrot. But the Obama administration has rightly concluded that absent strong inducements, deserved or not, from the United States and other key actors, the regime in Khartoum could well plunge Sudan back into a horrendous civil war.

Americans Want Smaller World Role

Battered by two lengthy wars and a two-year-old economic crisis, the U.S. public appears increasingly reconciled to Washington's playing a declining global role in the coming years, according to the latest in a biennial series of major surveys released here Thursday by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs (CCGA).

The public also appears increasingly doubtful about the benefits of economic globalization and skeptical that Islamic and Western civilizations can live together peacefully, compared to how it felt in 2002, according to the survey of nearly 2,600 respondents who were interviewed in June.

Minority Rules

If the spectrum of political stereotypes about Sweden ranges from IKEA-furnished socialist paradise to Stieg Larsson-style right-wing dystopia, the country's upcoming election on September 19 seems far more likely to confirm the latter than the former. The Sweden Democrats, a once-marginal populist party whose platform targets immigrants, is on the path to enter parliament for the first time -- and potentially to serve as kingmaker in post-election coalition negotiations.

The Great Internet Freedom Fraud

Posted: 17 Sep 2010 12:49 AM PDT

In March of this year, Hillary Clinton announced that the U.S. government had granted a license to a company whose software would "help information continue to flow freely into and out of Iran." That software was called Haystack, an anti-censorship tool that received glowing coverage from the BBC, NPR, the Christian Science Monitor, the International Herald Tribune, and many other news sources. Perhaps it was Haystack's teasing, provocative slogan -- "Good luck finding that needle" -- that so intrigued the reporters. Or maybe it was the story of its founder Austin Heap, the twentysomething IT specialist from San Francisco who, prior to founding Haystack in June 2009, spent much of his time killing dragons in World of Warcraft. Just nine months later, Heap was given the Innovator of the Year award by the Guardian. Soon after, Heap claimed that he was headed to Washington, D.C., to meet with Sen. John McCain.

What Arabs Really Think About Iran

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 10:31 PM PDT

It is no secret that Arab public opinion toward U.S. President Barack Obama has soured since his June 2009 speech in Cairo, Egypt. According to a slew of recent opinion polls, Arabs have been deeply disappointed with Obama's accommodations to Israel. Analysts have suggested that this discontent has caused Arabs to embrace Iran and its nuclear program, and are hostile to U.S.-led attempts to isolate and pressure the Islamic Republic. But on this front, the numbers tell a very different story.

One U.S. soldier was killed and another was wounded while attempting to defuse an explosive device in Balad. Meanwhile, at least 12 Iraqis were killed and 12 more were wounded in attacks across the country.

The family of a Kurdish journalist killed last May is challenging the results of an official investigation that found Sardasht Osman had ties to Ansar al-Islam and was killed by Islamic militants. A U.S. press watchdog, the Committee to Protect Journalists, asked Kurdish authorities to "launch a new and credible investigation." Osman had written articles criticizing Kurdish regional president Massoud Barzani and many, including his family and colleagues, blamed Kurdish security forces for his murder.

The Real Story Behind Bill Gates And "Death Panels"

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 05:25 PM PDT

The Real Story Behind Bill Gates And "Death Panels" Microsoft founder is a hardcore eugenicist who has publicly stated his intention to use the billions worth of vaccines his foundation funds to lower global population Paul Joseph Watson Prison Planet.com Tuesday, September 14, 2010 Bill Gates' advocacy for "death panels" has caused controversy amongst conservative commentators, but the real outrage behind the story has been completely overlooked -- the fact that Gates is a hardcore eugenicist and has called for lowering the global population through vaccines which his foundation funds to the tune of billions. Gates' "death panel" comments were actually made over two months ago at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Aspen Colorado, but they only garnered attention when the video clip appeared on numerous conservative websites on Sunday, including Breitbart.tv and The Blaze. During a question and answer session, Gates implied that elderly patients undergoing expensive health care treatments should be killed and the money spent elsewhere. Gates said there was a "lack of willingness" to consider the question of choosing between "spending a million dollars on that last three months of life for that patient" or laying off ten teachers. "But that's called the death panel and you're not supposed to have that discussion," added Gates. The Microsoft owner's advocacy for killing granny in the name of spending the money elsewhere strikes at the root of why so many Americans are outraged.
