US, S.Korea to hold naval war games next week
SEOUL: The US and South Korean navies will next week stage an anti-submarine exercise...officials said Friday.
The drill, the second joint exercise in two months, will involve at least nine ships plus surveillance aircraft, the US military said in a statement.
....
The drill will be held from next Monday to Friday in the Yellow Sea between China and Korea. It was postponed early this month due to an approaching typhoon.
It will not involve a US aircraft carrier, unlike the first joint naval exercise held in late July. That drill was relocated from the Yellow Sea to the east coast of the peninsula in response to China's expressions of concern.
The statement said US forces would send two US guided missile destroyers, a surveillance ship, a fast attack submarine and P-3C Orion aircraft to next week's drill.
South Korea would send two destroyers, a fast frigate, a patrol craft, P-3C aircraft and a submarine.

NATO soldier dies in Afghanistan
A NATO soldier was killed on Thursday in an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan, the commander of international forces said, which brings the death toll to 533 this year.
"An International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service member died following an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan today," ISAF said in a statement.
The nationality of the soldier was not disclosed in line with ISAF policy to allow the relevant national authorities to make casualty notifications and announcements.

Two killed as NATO tankers, containers blown up in Pakistan
PESHAWAR, Pakistan: Militants Thursday blew up four oil tankers and three containers carrying fuel and other supplies for NATO troops in Afghanistan, killing two people, officials said.
The incidents took place in the Khyber tribal region near the Afghan border, top local administration official Shafeerullah Khan told AFP.
"A bomb planted underneath an oil tanker exploded while it was on the move in a market in Landi Kotal town of Khyber turning the vehicle into a ball of flame, which also engulfed four nearby vehicles and killed two people," Khan said.
He blamed the attacks, which also wounded 11 people, on local militants.
The lawless Khyber is on the main NATO supply route through Pakistan into Afghanistan, where 150,000 foreign forces are battling to reverse an escalating Taliban insurgency.
Khan said militants also blew up three oil tankers and four containers carrying fuel and other supplies for NATO troops. "These vehicles were parked in Torkhum town at the time of attack", he added.
Local intelligence officials in Khyber also confirmed the attacks and casualties.
NATO supplies also travel through the southwestern province of Baluchistan, which is troubled by Taliban violence and attacks by separatists who rose up in 2004 demanding autonomy and a greater share of profits from natural resources.

Entry of NATO containers banned in Peshawar
Due to security concerns, Peshawar police have banned entry of all NATO containers and heavy vehicles, destined for Afghanistan, into the city.
Due to the ban, the GT Road near Chamkani was blocked due to a mess-up of heavy vehicles and cars going to Afghanistan on the road.
However, later on, the police started diverting the traffic back to Nowshehra. Police also banned the entry of heavy traffic in Peshawar and also diverted the trucks containing rescue and relief goods. According to the police, this entry ban will last for two days. The drivers protested against the decision.

NATO containers intercepted in Peshawar
PESHAWAR: The political administration has intercepted NATO containers near the Pak-Afghan border over security concerns, causing a long queue of vehicles on the G.T. Road, SAMAA learnt Friday.
According to sources, NATO containers en-route to Afghanistan were stopped in Peshawar after oil tankers and container trucks carrying fuel and other supplies for NATO troops in Afghanistan have been blown up in Khyber Agency.
A long queue of vehicles on G.T. Road blocking traffic caused trouble to truck drivers.
A bomb exploded beneath an oil tanker while it was on the move in a market on Thursday. Other vehicles were also engulfed.
Khyber is on the main NATO supply route from Pakistan into Afghanistan.

Afghan War: Czechs To Deploy 200 More Troops, Special Forces For Com

CzechRep may raise number of troops in Afghanistan by 200 to 730
Prague: The Czech Republic plans to reinforce its military contingent in Afghanistan with 200 soldiers, thus raising the total number of troops to 730 in 2011, Defence Minister Alexandr Vondra (Civic Democrats, ODS) told CTK today.
According to available information, members of the Czech military special forces are to resume operation in Afghanistan. About a hundred of them are to be sent in.
The special forces elite unit, based in Prostejov, south Moravia, took part in the Afghan Enduring Freedom operation in the past. It fought against Taliban militants until end-2009. Its contributions to the allied efforts were highly appreciated by its U.S. counterparts.
The unit returned home after the Czech leftist parties blocked its further operation in Afghanistan last year. Only some 20 members of the special forces have stayed there this year to protect the Czech diplomatic mission in Kabul.
The government of Petr Necas (ODS) will probably also propose sending more policemen to Afghanistan.
On the other hand, it seems not to reckon with sending in the Arthur radar, which the previous interim cabinet of Jan Fischer planned to do.
Czech soldiers´ participation in foreign missions requires the approval from parliament. Vondra today repeated that apart from increasing the Czech contingent in Afghanistan next year, Prague will simultaneously markedly reduce its participation in the KFOR mission in Kosovo to 90 soldiers from the present 500.
In early September, a group of Czech soldiers left for Afghanistan to start training the local military as of November.
At present, about 530 Czech soldiers operate in Afghanistan, most of them as part of the Czech Provincial Reconstruction Team in Logar.
Czech pilots and helicopters help transport allied and Afghan units. Further Czech troops operate at the Bagram base, some 50 km north of Kabul.

Notice: Potential threat to Stop NATO list
Posted by: "Rick Rozoff" rwrozoff@yahoo.com rwrozoff
Fri Sep 24, 2010 9:06 am (PDT)
For the past 48 hours select material posted to the Stop NATO email list has not been allowed to go through to subscribers or to enter the archives.
This may be a problem with Yahoo Groups in general (much like language encoding problems in the archives and on occasion with the daily digest since February of 2009), but in view of recent correspondence received from Yahoo it may signal something else.
On August 19, 2010 the Stop NATO moderator received an email from the Military Times group (Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times, Marine Corps
Times, Defense News, Federal Times, Armed Forces Journal, Training &
Simulation Journal and C4ISR Journal) demanding that he immediately delete a news item from Navy Times posted on a list in Asia that I was not familiar with or face alleged copyright infringement penalties. (Complete correspondence is included below.)
The next day I explained matters to the Military Times representative, who never responded to me although I had offered to remove the item in question from the Stop NATO archives even though I had not been asked to (see below).
Four weeks later Yahoo informed me that it had arbitrarily removed a Stop NATO posting from the archives although at no time was an attempt made to contact me about it before the action was taken.
The Yahoo email also contained a paragraph, below, that states not only can an email group be shut down but that an individual's email account(s) can be terminated for emailing copyrighted news material, although the intention in doing so is strictly informational.
As can be seen in the exchange between the Military Times person and myself that follows, Yahoo is stating that it can terminate groups and individual email accounts even if one individual emails a second and that email is forwarded to a third party and ends up in the (eminently obscure) archives of an unrelated and unfamiliar email group's archives.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of friends, Stop NATO has a back-up/alterative server that is ready to continue the list (and preserve its archives) should problems with Yahoo continue.
Yours for peace,
Rick Rozoff

RE: Unauthorized Use of Copyrighted Navy Times Material
Dear Denise,
I followed the link you provided - http://groups.google.com.pk/group/misc.activism.progressive/browse_thread/thread/491d4c2c5697eea6 - and it is apparently to the archives of a private email group in Pakistan, one I am not associated or even familiar with.
The news feature you mention is one of ten included in a daily digest of items I send out to a private, (unpaid) subscriber-only email list.
I credited the site, Navy Times; provided the date and the byline, July 6, 2010 by Gidget Fuentes, and even included the URL/link to the original feature.
In no manner did I misrepresent the origin, nature or ownership of the article. Moreover, at no time have I posted an Air Force/Army/Marine Corps/Navy Times item - complete or partial - on a website or even blogsite.
If I were to borrow a recording from a public library and a third party took it and, unbeknownst to me, made copies of it, I hardly see how I could be accused of copyright infringement.
If you insist, I will remove all Military Times material from the (private) archives of my own email list.
But I have some serious concerns about your indication that you might have recourse to legal action against me.
If your copyright policy was a general one, every email news list and most every independent news website in the world would be shut down. Indeed, as there is no guarantee that even material contained in a private email between two individuals can not make the rounds, ending up posted somewhere, I fear that the universal application of your policy could prevent even the passing on of a news item between two individuals - a degree of proprietry exclusiveness and de facto censorship frightening in its implications.
....
Respectfully,
Rick Rozoff

Slovakia plans to withdraw troops from Kosovo
BRATISLAVA, Slovakia: The Defense Ministry says it has proposed to completely withdraw Slovak troops from Kosovo.
The ministry says 140 servicemen now deployed in Kosovo with the NATO-led force should be home by year's end.
The government and Parliament will have to approve the ministry's decision.
Ministry spokesman, Richard Sumeghy, said Friday the Kosovo withdrawal will
enable the country to send more troops to Afghanistan. He did not say how many more soldiers it wants to send there.
Slovakia currently has some 300 service members with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.

Lebanon: French Navy In Joint War Games

Lebanese Army and French Navy stage military exercise
BEIRUT: The Lebanese Army and troops from the French Navy held joint military maneuvers on Friday opposite the Maameltein beach, upon the request of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon and the French Embassy in Lebanon.
The maneuver included participants from the Lebanese Air Force, the Navy, Navy Seals, the Airborne Regiment and the First Armored Regiment, in addition to members of the French Navy.
The soldiers used warships â€" including French ship “Foudre†â€" and helicopters to conduct the exercise, which was designed to demonstrate the capabilities of the Lebanese Army.
The drill consisted of successfully seizing members of a fictional terrorist group who had taken over the Beirut Tripoli international road and were looking to destabilize internal security.
The supposed terrorists were based in Adma and had spread across the shore, and the army worked on surrounding them on the Maameltein Bridge.
Gazelle helicopters inspected the beach and used fire to secure a safe landing for the Airborne Regiment, which was led by Lieutenant Khaled Abbas.
The helicopters got closer to the Maameltein Bridge as warships drew nearer to the beach, and the planes were also used to facilitate the air drop of Navy Seals. The latter set off several explosions in the sea to hinder the terrorists’ movements.
The army forces finally succeeded in surrounding the terrorists on the bridge, thus concluding their exercise.
The army issued a statement later in the day, in which it said several Lebanese and French figures attended the maneuvers.
Among them were Major General Shawqi al-Masri, representing Lebanese Army Commander General Jean Kahwaji, French Ambassador to Lebanon Denis Pietton, and French Military Attaché in Lebanon Colonel Philippe Petrel.
“Masri and Pietton both praised the good collaboration between the two navy forces and the excellent performance of the participants,†the statement said.

Evening Times
September 24, 2010
City braces itself for naval invasion
The city’s businesses and entertainment centres are expecting to cash in when a mini-armada of warships ties up at the King George V docks ahead of the biggest military exercise in Europe.
Up to 10,000 personnel are expected to invade Glasgow next weekend.
....
The potential influx of navy personnel from the Arleigh Burke class destroyers, USS Nitze, Stout and Bainbridge....
Sailors from the UK and 13 other countries will relax before spending a gruelling two weeks back on board an international flotilla around Scotland’s coastline on Exercise Joint Warrior.
The war games in which Britain and her allies will participate will involve 30 ships, three submarines and seven helicopters along with 14 land-based air units, such as RAF staff, and 11 separate ground force units to include the Royal Marines and soldiers.
The first sailors will be in the city on Thursday when eight minesweepers sail up the Clyde to dock in Glasgow.
The UK and foreign crews will be joined 24 hours later by five frigates.
....
Exercise Joint Warrior will also involve military forces from America, Canada, Italy, France, Estonia, Spain, Poland, Belgium, Turkey, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
The aim is to provide co-ordinated tactical training for Britain’s Royal Navy, Army and RAF and units from allied nations.
The scenario will centre on three sovereign nations involved in disputes over territory and terrorist movements, and a range of situations will be enacted in major areas such as air defence, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare.

Inside Norway's underground military HQ
In November, Norway will officially move its military command base to its former Cold War complex in Bodo inside the Arctic Circle.
As Russia is strengthening its armed presence on the other side of their shared border, there is no better illustration of the militarisation of the Arctic, and of its serious strategic value for Norway.
The BBC's Paul Henley has been given exclusive access to the underground Norwegian headquarters.

U.S. May Be Seeking Provocation To Launch War Against Iran: Expert

US may be seeking provocation to launch war against Iran
Nadezhda Kevorkova
-Sanctions played a significant part in the case of Iraq and Yugoslavia. They weaken the country they are imposed against and are, to quote Congressman Ron Paul, precursors to a war. Thus, the situation remains perilous. Not long ago, Secretary of State Clinton practically called for a regime change in Iran. Tensions never subside.
-[T]wo weeks before the last US elections in 2008, Vice President Joe Biden went on record as saying that there were several scenarios for a certain generated crisis, to wit, a war. The Americans will have to tighten their belts. At first they won’t understand why all of that is needed. But they’ll approve everything eventually. Among other places, Biden localized the scenario in the Middle East.
-I don’t rule out that the scenario might have included such a thing as a false-flag attack, or, plainly speaking, a provocation...“False-flag attacks†as a war-starting method were time and again used in the 20th Century.
- A military conflict with a state possessing fairly good armaments, a population of over 70 million, and a trained army will be grave and long-term. No one can predict what its consequences will be.
US rhetoric on Iran and its efforts to involve Russia is a “dangerous precedent†that may indicate that Washington is seeking a pretext to launch a war, career diplomat Dmitry Ryurikov* has told RT.
On September 22, Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree which bans deliveries of S-300 missile systems to Iran. Called “On Measures to Implement Resolution 1929 of June 9, 2010 of the UN Security Council,†the document prohibits any transit across Russia and the transfer to Iran of all types of combat tanks, armored personnel carriers, large-caliber artillery systems, warplanes, helicopter gunships, warships, missiles or missile systems as defined in the UN Register of Conventional Arms.
Dmitry Ryurikov, a diplomat who served for long periods in Iran, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan, has shared his view on the issue with RT â€" its timing, possible consequences and the general situation around Iran.
RT: Medvedev signed the decree to the effect that Russia began implementing the UN July sanctions. Why was the decree signed precisely now?
Dmitry Ryurikov: The sanctions announcement was no news. The decision was accepted and all work involving arms deliveries was stopped earlier.
I would point to the fact that the signing of the decree is timed to coincide with the current UN General Assembly that is being attended by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran, who is causing displeasure by his extensive media appearances. He was invited by Larry King. He granted an interview to RT and others. Whether it is a chance coincidence, I wouldn’t know. The US media noted that Mr. Ahmadinejad became a hero of the day and was outperforming his opponents. He urged President Obama several times to have a public meeting with him at the General Assembly in the presence of representatives of other countries and to discuss all issues that were causing questions. This, of course, couldn’t fail to be an irritant. It was at this point that Russia’s announcement was made, which, however, had in it nothing new.
RT: Why did Russia sign sanctions that could go against its own economic interests?
DR: Obviously, Russia believed that joining the sanctions was more to its benefit than having relations with Iran in that sphere.
RT: What’s Russia’s benefit? It would have been paid $1 billion for its S-300 systems. Iran intended to offer Russia a commission for another 18 atomic stations. Now its rivals will be ticked to take over the orders.
DR: In all evidence, calculations of possible benefits and losses were made. The losses are obvious. Where benefits are concerned, they have not been yet outlined. This way or other, it’s the business of our current foreign policy planners. It’ll become clear later whether they were right or wrong in their planning.
RT: What losses are more painful? Image? Money?
DR: It depends on what point of view you choose. The US, on the contrary, sees this step as beneficial for Russia. It can only welcome the step. The Iranian reaction, as is natural, was diametrically opposite.
[What the US will end up with if it attacks Iran:
- the attacker’s facilities will become legitimate targets
â€" the war will be neither easy, nor rapid
â€" the consequences for the US, the world, the region and Israel are hard to calculate]
RT: The US welcomed Russia’s move. Right after that, media reported that the Iranian and US sides met in New York.
DR: I would like to believe that this event really took place and that it was not the last one. If President Obama didn’t respond to President Ahmadinejad’s appeal to meet in New York, at least their advisers did by starting negotiations. After all, claims regarding preemptive strikes at Iran’s nuclear facilities are a reality. Both in the US and Israel, there are people who would like these strikes to be delivered. US generals have been reporting lately that they are ready to launch them.
Sanctions played a significant part in the case of Iraq and Yugoslavia. They weaken the country they are imposed against and are, to quote Congressman Ron Paul, precursors to a war. Thus, the situation remains perilous. Not long ago, Secretary of State Clinton practically called for a regime change in Iran. Tensions never subside.
RT: What is holding the United States back regardless of its aggressive rhetoric?
DR: It needs a pretext. Iran’s nuclear program theme, no matter how much it is belabored by the media, the IAEA and the UN, provides no such pretexts because nothing has been proved.
Let me remind you that two weeks before the last US elections in 2008, Vice President Joe Biden went on record as saying that there were several scenarios for a certain generated crisis, to wit, a war. The Americans will have to tighten their belts. At first they won’t understand why all of that is needed. But they’ll approve everything eventually. Among other places, Biden localized the scenario in the Middle East. This caused a minor scandal which soon petered out. But it must not be forgotten that the generated crisis scenarios are there, the crisis may become a reality, and as envisaged by the scenario, President Obama should cope with it, that is, win. One is tempted to ask this question: Aren’t certain people in interested states inviting a solution by force?
[Why Iran is not Iraq
- population 75 million (Iraq’s is variously estimated as being anywhere between 26 and 32 million)
â€" a well-trained army, fully mobilized and drilled
â€" a retaliatory scenario available for attacks on the adversary]
RT: What is it that Iran has annoyed President Obama with?
DR: Barack Obama would prefer to take some constructive steps, to find a solution. But aside from him there are many other people that would like to make the Iraq-Afghanistan-Iran region homogenous in the political and economic sense. Besides, it is a strategically crucial region, something that explains the constant questions being posed to Iran via the IAEA. Let me stress that these sorts of frictions between the IAEA and any sovereign state are inadmissible. Should the IAEA so wish, all their grievances could be easily removed at the procedural level.
I don’t rule out that the scenario might have included such a thing as a false-flag attack, or, plainly speaking, a provocation.
One of these days, the prominent US journalist Bob Woodward, author of the best-selling All the President’s Men, is going to publish his new book of talks with President Obama and relevant materials. According to press reports, speaking in an interview with Woodward in July of this year, Obama said the United States could have withstood 9/11 and emerged stronger. Certain US observers feared that the estimate might be signaling readiness for a new attack of this kind, which should meet with a powerful rebuff directed at some terrorists with a clearly defined “Iranian address.†I don’t want to say that any administration may engage in those affairs. But there are people without an official status, who may wish to help the administration obtain a casus belli. They are offering plain-text advice to that effect.
RT: It looks like Iran itself is a target for ground and air terrorist attacks. How can it now be turned into an enemy?
DR: “False-flag attacks†as a war-starting method were time and again used in the 20th Century.
RT: As President Ahmadinejad was delivering his speech in the UN, the simultaneous translation was suddenly discontinued. He made a relevant observation but there was no reaction. Is this an ordinary situation in the UN?
[Reasons for constant escalation of tensions by the US
- a propensity to solve America’s domestic problems by launching wars in areas of the world far removed from the USA
â€" a strong political lobby of “chair-borne hawksâ€
â€" the wish to involve “third countries†like Russia and China in hostile activities]
DR: These things shouldn’t happen in principle. It’s yet another indication of the fact that the UN, like other international organizations, can be influenced. The same goes for the selectiveness of the IAEA grievances. Their structures are not fully independent and sovereign. Clear technical errors of this nature cannot be explained by certain circumstances.
RT: There are a great variety of expert estimates regarding Iran’s military might, ranging from very low to quite flattering. What is the reason?
DR: Iran’s putative adversary is exceedingly powerful militarily. The Iranian armaments, from the point of view of Iran itself, may look sufficiently strong to beat back an attack. But the thing is that the armaments wielded by those who will wish to oppose Iran have been tested, whereas Iranian tests have been held on much rarer occasions. But in saying that, we should keep in mind that the level of armaments is not the only decisive factor. Suffice it to look at Afghanistan, Iran’s neighbor. There is no comparison between the potential of US troops and the groups that oppose them in Afghanistan. And yet those groups constantly create very serious problems for the Americans.
RT: If a worst-case scenario is out and Iran is attacked, will the developments follow the same path as in Afghanistan and Iraq?
DR: I think that in this case the developments will follow a different path. We should keep in mind that in that case all the facilities of the attacking nations will be legitimate targets for Iran. To me, this is the burden of what Ahmadinejad said about that war not being limited to any one country or region. So it’s very difficult to foresee what a war will be all about. A high-ranking US general was right in saying that it was easy to push the button but it was a big question what would follow. A military conflict with a state possessing fairly good armaments, a population of over 70 million, and a trained army will be grave and long-term. No one can predict what its consequences will be.

Japan Mulls U.S. Global Hawks For Missile Interception Role

Japan To Decide This Year On Global Hawk
By Bradley Perrett
-The U.S. Defense Department has argued against Japan building its own aircraft.
BEIJING: Japan is expected to decide by the end of the year whether to order four Northrop Grumman RQ-4B Global Hawk surveillance aircraft that could later be upgraded to reinforce the country’s anti-ballistic missile defenses.
The decision, which has been brewing for years, is due to appear in the National Defense Program Guideline, which will set out future military policy when it appears this year, program officials say.
The Japanese military’s joint staff office is studying the possible order, reflecting its status as a national program. A force of four could provide a continuous patrol, even with one in deep maintenance.
The navy is arguing that Japan is not ready to deploy such unmanned aircraft and should therefore defer the decision. Doing so would open the possibility of buying the navy’s preferred version of the Global Hawk, the MQ-4C, which is still under development for the U.S. Navy as a specifically maritime-oriented patroller.
....
[A] retrofit could eventually include the Japanese Airboss infrared missile detection and tracking system. The sensor was successfully tested in December 2007 on a Japanese UP-3C, a converted maritime patrol aircraft.
....
In the missile-defense role, Japanese RQ-4s would operate purely as a sensor aircraft, cueing the sensors of another aircraft, such as the General Atomics MQ-9 Predator, or ships that would fire the missiles.
....
The defense ministry’s budget request for the fiscal year beginning in April 2011 includes funding for studies and research on unmanned aircraft. The money would pay for investigations into the foreign operation, sustainment and maintenance of high-altitude, long-endurance drones.
Japan has been working on its own surveillance drone in that category since 2001 as part of a program called the Future Unmanned Aircraft Systems Study. That aircraft would fly higher than a Global Hawk, but the government’s serious evaluation of the need for an RQ-4 order indicates that the indigenous drone is progressing slowly, if at all. The U.S. Defense Department has argued against Japan building its own aircraft.
An increase in the Japanese submarine fleet may also be announced in the new defense guideline, local media report. Japan has maintained a fleet of 18 submarines, including two for training, since 1976, but that is set to rise to 20.

352nd Special Operations Group conducts night training operations
Sep 24, 2010
Staff Sgt. Regina R. Machine, 13th Public Affairs Detachment
Aircrews of the 352nd Special Operations Group conducted midnight training maneuvers in the skies above Poland to maintain their state of mission readiness Sept. 18 during Exercise Jackal Stone ‘10.
Jackal Stone ‘10, hosted by both Poland and Lithuania this year, is an annual international special operations forces (SOF) exercise held in Europe. Its objective is to enhance capabilities and interoperability amongst the participating special operations forces as well as build new relationships and strengthen current ones.
Units participating in the exercise, such as the 352nd Special Operations Group based out of RAF Mildenhall, England, take advantage of this exercise to sharpen their skills.
352nd SOG aircrews took two MC-130P Combat Shadow aircraft through various flight maneuvers such as formation flight, cargo air drop operations and in-flight refueling.
....
The mission began with two Combat Shadows flying in formation. As the training progressed, the crews conducted evasive maneuvers while flying at low levels in reaction to simulated area threats.
The Combat Shadows continued the ‘nap-of-the-earth’ flying until they reached the drop zone, where the loadmasters prepared the bundles to be airdropped to special operations forces on the ground.
After the air drop, the Combat Shadows linked up with a 100th Air Refueling Wing KC-135 ‘Stratotanker’ waiting to refuel them while in flight. Refueling was the last task required to successfully complete the night’s training mission.

The Collapse of Western Morality

The Collapse of Western Morality
by Paul Craig Roberts
Yes, I know, as many readers will be quick to inform me, the West never had any morality. Nevertheless things have gotten worse.
In hopes that I will be permitted to make a point, permit me to acknowledge that the US dropped nuclear bombs on two Japanese cities, fire-bombed Tokyo, that Great Britain and the US fire-bombed Dresden and a number of other German cities, expending more destructive force, according to some historians, against the civilian German population than against the German armies, that President Grant and his Civil War war criminals, Generals Sherman and Sheridan, committed genocide against the Plains Indians, that the US today enables Israel’s genocidal policies against the Palestinians, policies that one Israeli official has compared to 19th century US genocidal policies against the American Indians, that the US in the new 21st century invaded Iraq and Afghanistan on contrived pretenses, murdering countless numbers of civilians, and that British prime minister Tony Blair lent the British army to his American masters, as did other NATO countries, all of whom
find themselves committing war crimes under the Nuremberg standard in lands in which they have no national interests, but for which they receive an American pay check.
I don’t mean these few examples to be exhaustive. I know the list goes on and on. Still, despite the long list of horrors, moral degradation is reaching new lows. The US now routinely tortures prisoners, despite its strict illegality under US and international law, and a recent poll shows that the percentage of Americans who approve of torture is rising. Indeed, it is quite high, though still just below a majority.
And we have what appears to be a new thrill: American soldiers using the cover of war to murder civilians. Recently American troops were arrested for murdering Afghan civilians for fun and collecting trophies such as fingers and skulls.
This revelation came on the heels of Pfc. Bradley Manning’s alleged leak of a US Army video of US soldiers in helicopters and their controllers thousands of miles away having fun with joy sticks murdering members of the press and Afghan civilians. Manning is cursed with a moral conscience that has been discarded by his government and his military, and Manning has been arrested for obeying the law and reporting a war crime to the American people.
US Rep. Mike Rogers, a Republican, of course, from Michigan, who is on the House Subcommittee on Terrorism, has called for Manning’s execution. According to US Rep. Rogers it is an act of treason to report an American war crime.
In other words, to obey the law constitutes “treason to America.â€
US Rep. Rogers said that America’s wars are being undermined by “a culture of disclosure†and that this “serious and growing problem†could only be stopped by the execution of Manning.
If Rep. Rogers is representative of Michigan, then Michigan is a state that we don’t need.
The US government, a font of imperial hubris, does not believe that any act it commits, no matter how vile, can possibly be a war crime. One million dead Iraqis, a ruined country, and four million displaced Iraqis are all justified, because the “threatened†US Superpower had to protect itself from nonexistent weapons of mass destruction that the US government knew for a fact were not in Iraq and could not have been a threat to the US if they were in Iraq.
When other countries attempt to enforce the international laws that the Americans established in order to execute Germans defeated in World War II, the US government goes to work and blocks the attempt. A year ago on October 8, the Spanish Senate, obeying its American master, limited Spain’s laws of universal jurisdiction in order to sink a legitimate war crimes case brought against George W. Bush, Barack H. Obama, Tony Blair, and Gordon Brown.
The West includes Israel, and there the horror stories are 60 years long. Moreover, if you mention any of them you are declared to be an anti-semite. I only mention them in order to prove that I am not anti-American, anti-British, and anti-NATO, but am simply against war crimes. It was the distinguished Zionist Jewish Judge, Goldstone, who produced the UN report indicating that Israel committed war crimes when it attacked the civilian population and civilian infrastructure of Gaza. For his efforts, Israel declared the Zionist Goldstone to be “a self-hating Jew,†and the US Congress, on instruction from the Israel Lobby, voted to disregard the Goldstone Report to the UN.
As the Israeli official said, we are only doing to the Palestinians what the Americans did to the American Indians.
The Israeli army uses female soldiers to sit before video screens and to fire by remote control machine guns from towers to murder Palestinians who come to tend their fields within 1500 meters of the inclosed perimeter of Ghetto Gaza. There is no indication that these Israeli women are bothered by gunning down young children and old people who come to tend to their fields.
If the crimes were limited to war and the theft of lands, perhaps we could say it is a case of jingoism sidetracking traditional morality, otherwise still in effect.
Alas, the collapse of morality is too widespread. Some sports teams now have a win-at-all-cost attitude that involves plans to injure the star players of the opposing teams. To avoid all these controversies, let’s go to Formula One racing where 200 mph speeds are routine.
Prior to 1988, 22 years ago, track deaths were due to driver error, car failure, and poorly designed tracks compromised with safety hazards. World Champion Jackie Stewart did much to improve the safety of tracks, both for drivers and spectators. But in 1988 everything changed. Top driver Ayrton Senna nudged another top driver Alain Prost toward a pit wall at 190 mph. According to AutoWeek (August 30, 2010), nothing like this had been seen before. “Officials did not punish Senna’s move that day in Portugal, and so a significant shift in racing began.†What the great racing driver Stirling Moss called “dirty driving†became the norm.
Nigel Roebuck in AutoWeek reports that in 1996 World Champion Damon Hill said that Senna’s win-at-all-cost tactic “was responsible for fundamental change in the ethics of the sport.†Drivers began using “terrorist tactics on the track.†Damon Hill said that “the views that I’d gleaned from being around my dad [twice world champion Graham Hill] and people like him, I soon had to abandon,†because you realized that no penalty was forthcoming against the guy who tried to kill you in order that he could win.
When asked about the ethics of modern Formula One racing, American World Champion Phil Hill said: “Doing that sort of stuff in my day was just unthinkable. For one thing, we believed certain tactics were unacceptable.â€
In today’s Western moral climate, driving another talented driver into the wall at 200 mph is just part of winning. Michael Schumacher, born in January 1969, is a seven times World Champion, an unequaled record. On August 1 at the Hungarian Grand Prix, AutoWeek Reports that Schumacher tried to drive his former Ferrari teammate, Rubens Barrichello, into the wall at 200 mph speeds.
Confronted with his attempted act of murder, Schumacher said: “This is Formula One. Everyone knows I don’t give presents.â€
Neither does the US government, nor state and local governments, nor the UK government, nor the EU.
The deformation of the police, which many Americans, in their untutored existence as naive believers in “law and order,†still think are “on their side,†has taken on new dimensions with the police militarized to fight “terrorists†and “domestic extremists.â€
The police have been off the leash since the civilian police boards were nixed by the conservatives. Kids as young as 6 years old have been handcuffed and carted off to jail for school infractions that may or may not have occurred. So have moms with a car full of children (see, for example, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AaSLERx0VM ).
Anyone who googles videos of US police gratuitous brutality will call up tens of thousands of examples, and this is after laws that make filming police brutality a felony. A year or two ago such a search would call up hundreds of thousands of videos.
In one of the most recent of the numerous daily acts of gratuitous police abuse of citizens, an 84-year-old man had his neck broken because he objected to a night time towing of his car. The goon cop body-slammed the 84-year old and broke his neck. The Orlando, Florida, police department says that the old man was a “threat†to the well-armed much younger police goon, because the old man clenched his fist.
Americans will be the first people sent straight to Hell while thinking that they are the salt of the earth. The Americans have even devised a title for themselves to rival that of the Israelis’ self-designation as “God’s Chosen People.†The Americans call themselves “the indispensable people.â€

U.S. wants to expand military cooperation with India: report
The United States wants to expand its military cooperation with India with more exchanges and exercises, according to a report by Indo-Asian News Service on Friday quoting U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Xinhua reported.
The U.S. official made the statement Wednesday ahead of Indian Defense Minister A.K. Antony's visit to Washington next week, said the report.
"We are looking to expand this relationship in ways that are mutually beneficial," Gates was quoted as saying. "But I think we' ll also be looking at ways in which we can expand our exchanges, exercises, and strengthen-further strengthen the relationship that we have."
Gates also indicated that he would talk with Antony about a 9 billion U.S. dollar deal for the purchase of 126 multi-role combat aircraft for the Indian Air Force through an open competition, according to the report.
Two American fighter planes, F-16IN and F-A-18IN, a version of the Super Hornet, are among six aircraft on offer. The Saab Gripen, Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale and Mikoyan MiG-35 are the other competitors in the bidding, said the report.
Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen also told the media that "just the military-to-military relationship with India is exceptionally strong and growing", said the report.
"The Indian Ocean, we also know, is an incredibly important body of water; not just now, but also in the future. So we recognize the importance of keeping that relationship as strong as it is, and also making it grow," Mullen was quoted as saying.
