Materialism that sustains the western democracies is exhausting itself: Fredrick Toben

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 08:12 AM PDT

Dr. Fredrick Toben is a German author and founder and former director of the Adelaide Institute. He has written numerous books on education, political science and history and is best known as a historical revisionist who has extensively argued the veracity of Holocaust accounts by the Jewish historians. Due to his holocaust denial, he has been imprisoned three times in Germany, United Kingdom and Australia.

This is an in-depth interview with Dr. Toben in which we've discussed his viewpoints regarding holocaust, the unconditional supports of the United States for Israel, the plight of Palestinian nation under the Israeli occupation and the fate of Middle East peace process.

About Parrots and Show Ponies

The latest Rebel News editorial Human Stupidity: The Biggest Conspiracy Of Them All shortly touched on the question whether it was stupidity or greed which contributed more to human suffering. This author made the point that greed could do no way near as much harm if it wasn't for human stupidity. To a large extent that stupidity is not inborn. We have been conditioned to act that way.

Dr. Terry Jones Will Burn the Talmud on September 11

Posted: 10 Aug 2010 12:50 PM PDT

Hello Islamophobes, ADL agents, Mossad agents  and just plain assholes who think that Dr. Terry (Slave Labor for Jesus) Jones is as cool as Pam Geller (actually, he is better looking) because he wants to burn a book he has never read. No, I'm not talking about the Qur'an, not even the Bible, I'm talking about the Talmud. That's right, Dr. Terry Jones of the Dove World Outrage Center agreed publicly this weekend to toss in a couple of copies of the Talmud into the fire when he, showing his Christian love, will also be burning copies of the Quran.  Please join him, and I hope, Michael Collins Piper,  on Sept. 11th for this occasion and be aware that this is a BYOT event. For Shas Party members – BYOT means "Bring you own Talmud" and please be ready to toss it into the fire.

Tuesday: 9 Iraqis Killed, 40 Wounded

At least nine Iraqis were killed 40 more were wounded in new attacks. The attacks focused mostly in and near southern Baghdad. Meanwhile, Sunni Muslims are awaiting the sighting of the moon this evening, which will mark the start of Ramadan.

In Baghdad, three bombs exploded on Eshreen Street in the Bayaa neighborhood, killing three people and injuring as many as 13 more while damaging a number of stores; three more people were wounded as they were trying to defuse a fourth bomb. Another bomb in Bayaa left two dead and eight wounded close to Saidiya. Two civilians were wounded in an Amil blast. In Tobchi, a policeman safely exited his car before a sticky bomb attached to it exploded, but two people were wounded in a sticky bomb attack in Doura. A Katyusha rocket left no casualties in the Green Zone.

Barry Soetoro AKA Barack Obama's Political Dynasty Crashes And Burns

While Barry Soetoro's family lavish themselves at a luxury Spanish resort amidst deepening economic turmoil, back home Obama's political dynasty crashes and burns as his approval ratings plunge to a record low of 41 per cent with less than a few months to go before the October midterm elections.

Obama has come under widespread criticism for preaching austerity and financial discipline even as his wife Michelle suns herself at an opulent resort in the Costa del Sol region while parading around in expensive designer clothing.

To Spite Our Faces

Time magazine's new cover girl certainly spawned a piranha swarm of controversy.  Lamentably, the outrage Time's Aug. 9 issue inspired has served to further mask the extent to which Obama-era war propaganda has eclipsed even the Orwellian efforts of the Bush/Cheney regime, and how that propaganda has buried the uncomfortable truth about our global military crusades.

Certainly, the image and the story that accompanied it were as atrocious in a fundamental sense as the circumstances that led to the subject's mutilation.  Equally awful was managing editor Richard Stengel's jack-asinine excuse for the content of the issue. "I felt that the image is a window into the reality of what is happening — and what can happen — in a war that affects and involves all of us," Stengel wrote.

The Cycle of Violence in Afghanistan

Listen to Ron Paul deliver these remarks here.

Last week the National Bureau of Economic Research published a report on the effect of civilian casualties in Afghanistan and Iraq that confirmed what critics of our foreign policy have been saying for years:  the killing of civilians, although unintentional, angers other civilians and prompts them to seek revenge.  This should be self-evident.

The enduring fame of German psychotherapist Hans Prinzhorn (1886-1933) is based almost entirely upon one book, Bildnerei der Geisteskranken (Artistry of the mentally ill), that brilliant and quite unprecedented monograph on the artistic productions of the mentally ill, which appeared in 1922. Sadly, it is too often forgotten that Hans Prinzhorn was the most brilliant and independent disciple of Germany's greatest 20th-Century philosopher, Ludwig Klages (1872-1956).

A tale of two women: Helen Thomas and Elena Kagan

Posted: 09 Aug 2010 02:13 PM PDT

This is the story of two women. One told the truth and her life was destroyed. The other one lied and was rewarded with the highest honor of her so-called profession.

For an astonishing 67 years, Helen Thomas set the standard for consistency and honesty among journalists covering the White House, so much so that after many years she was always given the privilege of asking the first question at all presidential press conferences. Regard for her work was so high that a plaque with her name on it was attached the front row seat she always occupied.

"Mongrel": Historically, and from Obama's Mouth

Posted: 09 Aug 2010 12:46 PM PDT

I did not learn of President Obama's reference to Black people as "mongrels" on ABC's "The View" until two days after the fact, and could not initially believe it had happened. Surely, such an occurrence should have provoked a scream heard in every corner of Black America. Yet, it did happen, last Thursday, and there was no general outcry.

The crime unfolded casually. Asked about his racial background, the president replied, "We," meaning African Americans, "are sort of a mongrel people."

Out of Sight, Out of Mind (Even when it's not out of sight)

Since BP announced that CEO Tony Hayward would receive a multi-million dollar golden parachute and be replaced by Bob Dudley, we have witnessed an incredibly broad, and powerful, propaganda campaign. A campaign that peaked this week with the US government, clearly acting in BP's best interests, itself announcing, via outlets willing to allow themselves to be used to transfer the propaganda, like the New York Times, this message: "The government is expected to announce on Wednesday that three-quarters of the oil from the Deepwater Horizon leak has already evaporated, dispersed, been captured or otherwise eliminated — and that much of the rest is so diluted that it does not seem to pose much additional risk of harm."

Eight Palestinian youths and the crime they didn't commit

Nasser Jaber, 16

Eight Palestinian teenagers were tried in the court of military judge Lt. Col. Menashe Vahnish on November 11, 2008. Referring to a soldier from the Kfir Brigade, Vahnish said, "at this stage, there is no reason to cast any doubt on the witness." According to his police testimony, on October 30, 2008 the soldier, T.M., and some of his comrades apprehended stone-throwing Palestinian 16-year-olds on a road that runs between the al-Aroub refugee camp south of Bethlehem and an agricultural school across the way.

Vahnish also saw no reason to doubt the accounts given by two other soldiers from the Kfir Brigade company, L.G. and G.D., whose statements to the Etzion police formed the basis of indictments submitted by the army prosecutor against the Palestinians. Under the indictment, the eight teenagers hurled rocks "from a distance of about 20 meters at Israeli cars traveling on Route 60, with the intention of harming the vehicles or their passengers."

On July 23, speaking at an ASEAN regional forum in Hanoi, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton declared that her government "supports a collaborative diplomatic process for resolving the various disputes" over the South China Sea. She also made a point of noting that the U.S. would be happy to offer its services as a mediator and that Washington opposes "the use or threat of force by any claimant."

Can the First Lady Take the Secret Service Wherever She Wants?

Posted: 09 Aug 2010 07:47 AM PDT

First lady Michelle Obama has generated some controversy for taking a four-day trip to Spain with her daughter Sasha and several friends. While the White House says Obama paid for her own plane trip and hotel room, the security costs, which included accommodation for dozens of Secret Service agents and an Air Force jet to carry the entire entourage, likely ran into the hundreds of thousands. Given the enormous expense of what was, in effect, a weekend getaway, could the Secret Service have said no to the first lady's trip?

Yom Kippur is coming up, an important Goyim-slaughterfest on the Jewish calendar, and you must be itching to let your bloodthirsty American bull terriers loose on those anti-Semitic Iranians, the last remaining hurdle standing in the way of the century old Zionist dream of a Greater Israel. Knowing you, their name alone, Iranians, is sufficient reason for you to completely annihilate them. Not that you would sacrifice too many Jewish soldiers for that noble task. Why should you put your re-election at risk, if you can make those stupid Americans die for you?! You will only send Israeli soldiers on combat missions if there is virtually no risk for their life, because the enemy is much or less unarmed, or because you were able to bribe the right people in charge of the enemy defense.

After a bloody couple of days, violence subsided somewhat, but at least six Iraqis were killed and 26 were wounded in the latest attacks. Ramadan will likely begin for Sunnis tomorrow night and on Wednesday night for Shi'ite Muslims, depending on the sighting of the moon. The holiday should prompt tightening of security across the country.

In Baghdad, a roadside bomb killed three people and wounded 10 others at a police station in the Ghazaliya neighborhood. The bombing appears to have been another in a series of attacks against traffic police. Interior Minister Jawad al-Boulani has promised to capture those behind the attacks. In the meantime, arms were issued to some policemen.

Why the 9-11 Trial is Being Blocked

Nine years after 9-11, the U.S. government is letting the so-called "mastermind" of 9-11 languish in "legal limbo" in Guantanamo.  Why would they do that?   If they have a case against the man they claim to be Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, why don't they make it?  What are they waiting for?  Why is this criminal process being obstructed, just like the 9-11 tort litigation in the court of Alvin K. Hellerstein?  Who does Attorney General Eric Himpton Holder really represent?

The clashes left two Lebanese soldiers, one Lebanese journalist and one Israeli soldier dead.

Nicole is looking forward to her decade-long overdue visit to her native country on August 6, and like many prospective visitors is now highly concerned about the security situation in Lebanon - particularly as countries like Canada, the US and the UK have issued travel warnings.

Norman Finkelstein: It Wasn't a War

The career of radical political scholar Norman Finkelstein might be described as a sort of heroic painting-into-a-corner. The son of Holocaust survivors, his life's work has been dedicated to exposing the hypocrisy, ideology, and violence that sustains the Israeli occupation of Palestine. The dimensions of his emphatic anti-Zionism, expounded over the course of six meticulously researched and often polemical books on Israel, Palestine, and the legacy of the Holocaust, have made him a pariah in the mainstream and a hero amongst supporters of Palestinian liberation.

The Valley of the Shadow of WikiLeaks

Posted: 08 Aug 2010 06:00 PM PDT

Leave it to the U.S. Department of "Defense" to continue fighting a war it's already irretrievably lost.

On Friday, the Pentagon "asked" online whistleblowing facilitator WikiLeaks to "do the right thing" by erasing all classified U.S. government documents from its servers and handing over any copies. I put the "asked" in scare quotes because although that's how CNN headlined it, the actual story used the far more accurate "demanded."

The Information War

It's almost funny – if your sense of humor runs to the dark side – to watch the Washington power elite go bonkers over the WikiLeaks revelations. We have Pentagon officials stamping their feet and demanding that WikiLeaks "return" the "stolen" documents it has posted online, and refrain from posting any more – as if this material, having gone viral worldwide, could possibly be reclaimed and made inaccessible. Here's Marc Thiessenneocon flack and advocate of torture – calling for WikiLeaks' Julian Assange to be kidnapped, detained, and presumably waterboarded. And it's not just the neocons: Democratic Senators Chuck Schumer and Dianne Feinstein have drafted a special amendment to legislation protecting journalistic sources specifically designed to exclude WikiLeaks.

Try Assange Under the Espionage Act

The outrage over the WikiLeaks release of 90,000 classified operational reports from Afghanistan is slowly congealing into calls for action. Adm. Mike Mullen and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates charged that the leaker and publisher "have on their hands the blood of some young soldier or that of an Afghan family." Former CIA Director Michael Hayden asserted that "this is the kind of stuff that gets people killed," while Jane Harman, the subcommittee chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, said leaked classified information is not an "acceptable" contribution to the debate about U.S. policy in Afghanistan. Julian Assange claimed the U.S. Department of Justice considered charging him as "a co-conspirator for espionage."

Chapter 5 of 200 Years Together: "After the Murder of Alexander II"

Posted: 08 Aug 2010 04:50 PM PDT

Solzhenitsyn's Chapter 5 ("After the Murder of Alexander II") recounts the important period after the assassination of Tsar Alexandar II in 1881. (See here. Donations for the translators are much needed.) The assassination inaugurated a period of anti-Jewish pogroms, restrictions on Jews, and an upsurge of Jewish involvement in revolutionary activities. Solzhenitsyn's treatment is highly reminiscent of Albert Lindemann's treatment in Esau's Tears and in his The Jew Accused in its dismissal of the apologetic accounts written by Jewish historians and in his portrayal of the very real difficulties faced by the Russian government in dealing with its Jewish population. In general, the tensions between Jews and non-Jews recounted here reflect traditional anti-Jewish themes, particularly Jewish economic domination, but there are also themes peculiar to the rise of the Jews as an educated elite that were widespread in Europe at the time. We also see here the theme of Jewish involvement in revolutionary political radicalism which culminated in the revolution of 1917.

Having obtained the lease with borrowed funds, Silverstein promptly raised rents forty percent.

US cannot defeat Iran without nuclear attack

Posted: 08 Aug 2010 01:03 PM PDT

"The Pentagon's planners have war-gamed an attack on Iran several times in the past 15 years, and they just can't make it come out as a US victory," says Richard Clarke, counterterrorism adviser in the White House under three administrations.

Any military historian will tell you that no regular army has ever defeated an organized guerilla resistance in a conventional warfare. The "military attack on the table", rhetoric aside, the Western leaders know that their demoralized soldiers are no match when it comes to fighting the faith-inspired Muslim resistance groups. The US, Israel, Russia, India, NATO and many other imperialist powers are learning that truth currently in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, Chechnya, Philippines, Kashmir and Lebanon.

Britain: Press TV is 'anti-Semite'

Posted: 08 Aug 2010 12:41 PM PDT

The other day I found two news items in daily Guardian showing how the 'freedom of press' works in that country. One was concerning MP George Galloway's outburst on Iranian Press TV – calling Israel's invasion of Gaza "war crimes" and Israel being an "apartheid-style occupation". The other was the Israeli butchery on Free Gaza Flotilla presented on Press TV by Tony Blair's sister-in-law Lauren Booth.

Ofcom, the British broadcasting (standards) regulatory has blamed Press TV for not showing the 'expected' impartiality during its June 5th broadcast about Israeli commandos assault on board Free Gaza vessels carry humanitarian supplies and aid workers, killing nine Turks in cold blood. The regulator also objected to Lauren Booth's comment: "Israeli commandos …. committed a massacre of innocent civilians sailing aid ships to besieged Gaza Strip …. This was obviously a barbarous attack on civilians. One thing is certain: As Turkey buries its murdered citizens – the brave men and women on those ships, in one move, have shifted world opinion against Israeli apartheid."

The Tribe, the Outsider and the Scapegoat

The leftist Mommy State now growing like a cancer in the U.S. wants to force all the boys and girls to share and get along. That may sort of work with five-year-olds, although not very well as any parent will attest, but it doesn't work at all with adults.

These days, forcing the boys and girls to "share" and "get along" is called "multiculturalism." It has never worked in the past, anywhere. It doesn't work now, anywhere, and it won't in the future, ever. There are many reasons why it doesn't work, but I think the simplest is what I call the Tribe, the Outsider and the Scapegoat.

Although Anbar province took the brunt of today's attacks, Baghdad and Mosul also saw a surge in violence. At least 40 Iraqis were killed and 109 more were wounded in those and a few other attacks. An American soldier died of unknown causes in Babel province as well. Meanwhile, the death toll in yesterday's massive triple bombing in Basra rose to 43 dead; about 185 others were wounded.

The son of former Iraqi foreign minister Tariq Aziz says his father's health is deteriorating quickly and calls for his release from prison on humanitarian grounds. Aziz was handed over to the Iraqis last month but continues to proclaim his innocence. As a close associate of Saddam, he was found guilty of conducting execution and displacing Kurds.

"You (Jews in the Diaspora) are changing jackets – you're changing countries like jackets…. If China ever became the world's foremost super power, American Jews would migrate there to assimilate rather than in the US," A.B. Yehoushua, the ultra-Zionist Israeli author told AJC conference in 2006. Many of Zionist leaders Chaim, Ben Gurion, Eshkol, Meir, Peres, Begin, etc. grew up in Diaspora, mainly in Eastern Europe.

Many Jewish writers, such as, Roger Tucker, Gilad Atzmon, Israel Shamir, Simon Jones, etc. have come to the conclusion that the only way to stop the bloodshed in the Middle East would to dismantle the Zionist entity and establish a democratic state for both the native Muslims and Christians and the foreign Jew settlers.

The law passed last month will keep the 'state secrets' in the archive vaults for another 20 years. Some of the secrets include the Holocaust of 100,000 Sephardic Jewish children, Lavlan affair, 1956 Sinai Campaign,Tantura massacre,1967 Occupation of Gaza, West Bank and East Jerusalem, Deir Yasin massacre, 1983 bombing of Marine barracks in Beirut, 2000 withdrawal from South Lebanon and 2006 Lebanon War.

Obama: 'We will leave Iraq this month'

Posted: 08 Aug 2010 02:49 AM PDT

Ben Obama has told the disabled US veterans in Atlanta that as per his February 27, 2009 pledge, US combat forces will be leaving this month. However, Obama was smart enough not to tell the veterans that after wasting over US$800 billion of taxpayers' money and 4300 US soldier dead and another 100,000 wounded – he is still going to leave 50,000 US soldiers in Iraq to look after the interests of Israel in the Middle East.

It was the pro-Israel warmongers like Dick Cheney, Richard Perle, John Bolton, Bill Kristol, Reuel Marc Gerecht, Norm Podhoretz, Daniel Pipes, etc. who fooled the American public by Israeli Hasbara (propaganda) lies to wage a war on Iraq, which had been US ally in 8-year war with the Islamic Republic. Now the same Israeli-poodles are running a vicious campaign against Islamic Republic. Richard Perle in a testimony before the US Senate on November 8, 2002, had claimed that Iraqi oil would pay for US war costs. Maybe it has – but only Perle and Benjamin Netanyahu would know!

Israeli Channel 2 News TV reporter conducted an interview with Dr. Noam Chomsky in Amman (Jordan) on May 23, 2010 after he was not allowed by Israeli authorities to travel to the West Bank to deliver a scheduled lecture at Birzeit college. In the interview, while he debunked Israeli claim that Chomsky is a "Self-Hating, Israel-Threatening (S.H.I.T)" Jew and restated his true relation with the Zionist entity: "I regard myself as a supporter of Israel" (watch the video below).

The reporter kept churning Hasbara lies about Dr. Chomsky, Hamas, Hizbullah and the Islamic Republic. Dr. Chomsky stated that the Israeli refusal to let him enter the West Bank was pre-planned. He defended his meeting with Hizbullah leader Sheikh Nasrallah and Hizbullah's right to carry its weapons as a deterrent. He also rejected Zionist propaganda about Iranian President Dr. Ahmadinejad being calling for the destruction of Israel. He stated that both Ahmadinejad and Hizbullah are willing to accept the solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict, acceptable to Palestinians.

'Secret hand' in French Sahel raid

France's raid into Mali on Thursday, July 22, in an attempt to liberate a French hostage who had been seized in northern Niger in April and held hostage by al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) emir Abdelhamid abou Zaïd in the Tigharghar mountains of north-east Mali, close to the village of Tessalit and less than 200kms south of the Algeria border, was an unmitigated disaster.

Not only did it fail to find Michel Germaneau, but AQIM leader, Musab Abdul Wadoud (Abdul Malek Droukdel) announced two days later that Germaneau had been executed in retaliation for the six AQIM members killed in the raid.

The Grinch Who Stole Conservatism

Posted: 07 Aug 2010 04:06 PM PDT

The GOP is frantically searching for the person who will lead them to the Promised Land (translate: White House) in 2012. Barack Obama is leaving a death stench so heavy that even most of the political allies in his own party are asking him to stay away from their reelection campaigns. You gotta give it to Obama: he has done in one term what most Presidents cannot accomplish until their second (lame duck) term. The problem is, the GOP just can't seem to find their Moses (or even their Ronald Reagan). That means, as far fetched as it sounds now, Obama has a good chance of being reelected. And, once again, when any Democrat candidate for President wins, the GOP will have no one to blame but themselves. 2012 could be another example.

GOP Blank Check for War?

Posted: 07 Aug 2010 02:37 PM PDT

High among the blunders of history was the "blank cheque" Kaiser Wilhelm gave Vienna, after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, to deal with the Serbs as they saw fit.

Five weeks later, Vienna cashed the check and declared war, after Belgrade refused to submit to all 10 demands of an ultimatum. Russia mobilized; Germany and France followed. And war came, the bloodiest in all of European history with 9 million soldiers in their graves.

Iran without Ahmadinejad

Most world leaders are ignorant of the fact that the real power in the Islamic Republic is nation's Spiritual Leader, Ayatullah Ali Khamenei, who is the Rahbar (Supreme Guardian of the 1979 Islamic Revolution). He is the Supreme C-in-C of the Iranian Armed Forces. Under Iranian Constitution, he is not allowed to assume a political position, but also cannot be replaced through US-sponored 'Green Revolution'. The country's elected President is the second highest official State authority who is responsible for the implementation of the Constitution and, as the Chief Executive, for the exercise of the executive powers, with the exception of those matters that directly relate to the Leader.

"Gaza is a man-made crisis"

The quality of life, the economy and food security for Palestinians living in Gaza have been severely impaired by Israel's strict four-year blockade, according to the UN.

Israel says its closure regime is designed to protect Israeli citizens from attacks by militants in Gaza. Hamas, the ruling group in Gaza, says Israel's blockade is aimed at undermining its rule.

Israel destroys Bedouin village, again

Posted: 07 Aug 2010 01:03 PM PDT

Bulldozers returned to the village of al-Araqib in the northern Negev on Wednesday, 4 August, and demolished approximately ten new structures residents and supporters had built a week after Israeli forces completely destroyed the village on 27 July.

Hundreds of Bedouin Palestinians, who hold Israeli citizenship, were made homeless last week after Israeli police, supported by bulldozers, helicopters and busloads of cheering Israeli civilians, razed the entire village to the ground. Investigative journalist Max Blumenthal revealed that not only were Israeli civilians brought in busloads to inspirit the destruction of al-Araqib on 27 July, but Israeli youth were employed by a private security outsourcing firm to physically assist in the ethnic cleansing project itself ("A Tale of Two Summer Camps and One Dark Future, 3 August 2010).

Scores injured in explosions, Israeli attacks on Gaza

Posted: 07 Aug 2010 12:41 PM PDT

Israeli airstikes killed a Palestinian resistance activist and wounded another early Wednesday morning 4 August, east of Khan Younis in the occupied Gaza Strip, reports Reuters, citing Palestinian medical sources. This latest attack comes on the heels of five days of Israeli missile strikes, Palestinian rocket fire and other explosions that have injured dozens and killed one leader of the armed wing of Hamas.

Tens of Palestinians were injured in a massive explosion on Monday, 2 August in the refugee camp of Deir al-Balah in the south of the occupied Gaza Strip. The Electronic Intifada originally stated, using reports from Ma'an news agency in the West Bank which referred to Palestinian medical sources, that the blast was caused by Israeli missile strikes. However recent reports by the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) indicate that "there are reasons to suspect that the explosion was coming from inside the house and occurred for no apparent reason ... Internal explosions occurred in the past in houses amidst densely populated areas, because of mistakes in manufacturing, bad storage of bombs or other reasons, which caused many fatalities among civilians and destroyed houses" ("PCHR Calls for Investigations into Injury of 58 Palestinians ...").

September 11: planes that hit WTC were not Boeing 767s

The official report by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) relating to the two planes that crashed into WTC on September 11, 2001 shows that they were traveling at a speed of 945 km/h and 796 km/h respectively.

Pilots for 9/11 Truth , an international organization of pilots and aviation professionals, has pointed out that, according to the manufacturer, the Boeing 767 develops structural failure and dismembers at a speed surpassing 660 km/h when flying at near sea level in thick air . This has also been certified by a former senior NASA executive, Dwain Deets.

Israel's siege on freedoms

It's three years since I've been back to Gaza. Much has happened since my last visit. Fatah waged a failed coup and now rules only the West Bank, while Hamas is in charge of Gaza. Israel launched its deadly Cast Lead assault. Fuel shortages. Electricity crises. And so on.

I needed to regain perspective. So I walked and I talked and I listened. I went to the beach where women -- skinny jeans and all -- were smoking water pipes, swimming and generally having a good time, irrespective of the purported Hamas ban on women smoking sheesha.

Missing the forest

Posted: 07 Aug 2010 10:17 AM PDT

Avraham Burg

Sometimes you really can't see the forest for the trees. The forest of political, governmental and institutional racism in Israel is dark and deep. One particular tree in that forest happens to have Israelis all riled up: The state's handling of the children of migrant workers. In the shade of a nearby tree is the state's handling of these children's parents, but this excites the Israelis somewhat less. And there are many other poisonous trees in the forest: Citizenship laws, loyalty laws, conversion laws, the razing of Bedouin villages in the Negev and even the story of the Arab delivery man who was convicted of rape for pretending to be a Jew. Each one galvanized parts of society into action, and this is well and good; but few see the big picture, and the big picture is several times worse than the sum of its components.

International solidarity under attack

Posted: 07 Aug 2010 10:13 AM PDT

From small beginnings and with few resources, the international movement in solidarity with the Palestinians has grown into a force that Israel perceives as a major threat. The assault on the Gaza aid flotilla was a lethal escalation in what has become an increasingly bitter campaign against that movement, whose constituents now range from dockworkers in South Africa refusing to offload Israeli goods to students at Berkeley demanding divestment.

South Africa's lessons for Gaza

Posted: 07 Aug 2010 10:00 AM PDT

The Palestinian national movement has overlooked this question: does the Gaza Strip resemble the racist Bantustans of apartheid South Africa? During the apartheid era, South Africa's black population was kept in isolation and without political and civil rights. Is Gaza similar? The answer is yes and no.

What is apartheid? As defined by the 1973 United Nations convention, apartheid is a policy of racial or ethnic segregation founded on a set of discriminatory practices that favor a specific group in order to ensure its racial supremacy over another group ("International Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the crime of Apartheid," 30 November 1973). In Israel, institutionalized racial discrimination is unequivocally founded on ensuring the primacy of a group of Jewish settlers over the Palestinian Arabs. When comparing the applications of the apartheid policy, it is difficult to identify any differences between white rule in South Africa and its Israeli counterpart in Palestine in terms of the segregation and designation of certain areas to Israeli Jews and others to the Arabs, the delineation of certain laws and privileges for Jews and a discriminatory set of laws that apply only to Palestinians.

He is known to be a champion of the "price-tag" policy of reprisal attacks on Palestinians, including punishing them for attempts by officials to enforce Israeli law against the settlements.

Hamas "morality" campaign restricts civil liberties in Gaza

Gazans are caught between a rock and a hard place. While Israel continues to apply a crippling siege on the coastal territory, Gaza's Hamas government is cracking down on civil and political liberties in what appears to be a campaign to slowly Islamicize Gaza.

Last week detectives from Gaza's de facto Hamas government raided several stores and seized clothing which they alleged bore "immoral words." Cotton shirts produced in Gaza City with the slogan "Porn Man Clothing" emblazoned on were confiscated.

It costs a lot of money and we all know how miserable we feel the next day. Nevertheless, many of us, male and female, do it quite regularly, not just as adolescents. Activists work to stop tax-exempt donations to Israeli settlements

Posted: 07 Aug 2010 06:48 AM PDT

As Israel's illegal settlement enterprise in the occupied West Bank continues to be a strain on US-Israel relations, an unflattering light is being shone on US private donations towards the development of the settlements that are increasingly encroaching on Palestinian land.

Most of the construction work in the settlements is in the hands of American, Canadian and European developers. Much of the money needed for settlement development comes from private American donations. It is estimated that tens of millions of dollars reach the settlements in the form of charity, contributions that by virtue of their philanthropic nature enjoy tax-exempt status under the US' Internal Revenue Code.

Back in 2007 the notorious American Jewish right-wing organization, the ADL (Anti-Defamation League) announced that it recognised the events in which an estimated 1.5 million Armenians were massacred as "genocide." The ADL's national director, Abraham Foxman, insisted that he made the decision after discussing the matter with 'historians'. For some reason he failed to mention who the historians were, nor did he refer to their credibility or field of scholarship. However, Foxman also consulted with one holocaust survivor who supported the decision.  It was Elie Wiesel, not known for being a leading world expert on the Armenian ordeal.

This is happening under the nose of the US administration despite its claims of support for a two-state solution and criticism of Israel's continued settlement building.

The Sorrow of Empire

Posted: 06 Aug 2010 06:00 PM PDT

"In the decade following the end of the Cold War," wrote Chalmers Johnson in his 2000 book Blowback , "the United States largely abandoned a reliance on diplomacy, economic aid, international law, and multilateral institutions in carrying out its foreign policies and resorted much of the time to bluster, military force, and financial manipulation." They were certain to produce consequences, Johnson claimed. And so they did, on a September morning a year later, when jihadists previously sponsored by the U.S. in Afghanistan and Bosnia turned their sights on America.

Long before Rahm Emanuel, governments knew how to use a crisis to seize more power . September 11 was followed by an explosive growth of bureaucracy at home, and increased belligerence abroad. Afghanistan was originally invaded to capture Osama bin Laden; though he hasn't been seen in years , American and NATO troops are still here, and the Taliban — once believed defeated — is back and stronger than ever. The invasion of Iraq in 2003 and the subsequent occupation was sold to the American public as a pre-emptive attack against a government in possession of weapons of mass destruction and willing to share them with terrorists. When it became obvious that the WMD story was one colossal hoax, the Emperor's only reaction was a shrug and "So what?"

He said 80 million Americans are "anti-Semitic"-40 million "seriously infected" and 40 million "mildly" so.
