A Neocon Preps US for War with Iran

Posted: 14 Aug 2010 02:14 PM PDT

I guess I was naïve in thinking that The Atlantic and its American-Israeli writer Jeffrey Goldberg might shy away from arguing for yet another war — this one with Iran — while the cauldrons are still boiling in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Pakistani General: Islamic Iran is not acceptable to US-Israel

Posted: 14 Aug 2010 12:23 PM PDT

In a recent interview with Islamic Republic News Agency, Pakistan’s political and military analyst, Lt. Gen. Abdul Qayyum, said that an independent Iran is not acceptable to both the US and Israel. The General is Chairman of Bin Qutab Foundation, a charity organization.

“They could take every step to pressure Islamic Republic to rollback its civilian nuclear program,” he said.

Kashmir – The ‘Valley of Blood’

Posted: 14 Aug 2010 12:10 PM PDT

“Ultimately, I say this with all deference to this Parliament – the decision will be made in the hearts and minds of the men and women of Kashmir; neither in this Parliament, nor in the United Nations nor by anybody else,” Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Primr Minister of India, August 7, 1952.

“The Kashmiri Freedom movement is often portrayed as a communal movement where Kashmiri Muslims are pitted against the Hindus, but this is far from true. There is a rich tradition of Kashmiriyat – a composite cultural identity with the glorious traditions of communal amity, tolerance and compassion – in the Valley dating back several centuries,” Akhila Raman, an Indian researcher on the Kashmir conflict.

Gaza's Poisoned Water

Posted: 14 Aug 2010 11:44 AM PDT

steve lendmanThis article follows an August 6 one discussing Palestinians Denied Access to Water, found through the following link:

http://sjlendman.blogspot.com/2010/08/palestinians-denied-access-to-water.html

It explained how Israel exploits Palestinian water resources, using most of it, forcing them to find ways to get by. Water, of course, is essential to life, rights to it natural and usufructuary. Belonging to everyone as part of the commons, it must be used, not owned or abused, an essential truth Israel corrupts.

Supporting the Wrong Side

When Nelson Mandela stood to greet the thousands of people gathered to watch the world cup final in South Africa, everyone stood to show respect to the man whose moral authority and stardom is unrivalled and uncontested.  One wonders how Mandela came to represent moral and human integrity in our age and how he was treated by a racist government before he defeated it.  What were the accusations levelled at him during the different stages of his struggle?

Once again, is the West’s Frankenstein out of control?

Posted: 14 Aug 2010 10:08 AM PDT

When international condemnation intensified in relation to the crime committed by Israel against the aid flotilla unarmed activists, who were trying to bring food and medicine to the civilians besieged in Gaza, the Netanyahu government started to use expressions like ‘intentions to ease the blockade’.  But here is Catherine Ashton, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, who visited Gaza last week, saying that she saw no sign of easing the blockade and declaring, on behalf of the EU that keeping the blockade on one and a half million Palestinian civilians is “unacceptable”.

Dr. Lawrence Davidson: All Is Not Quiet on the Lebanese Front

Posted: 14 Aug 2010 08:47 AM PDT

On Tuesday August 3, 2010 violence erupted along Lebanon’s southern frontier. Almost simultaneously verbal violence against Lebanon erupted from the U.S. House of Representatives. Soon thereafter Lebanon lost, at least temporarily, $100 million in U.S. military aid. What is this all about?

The Lebanese border, or so-called Blue Line, has been a Middle East flashpoint for decades. It has been the site of repeated wars, cross border skirmishes and often futile United Nations peacekeeping efforts to keep things below a boiling temperature. Israel says that south Lebanon has harbored Palestinian fighters in the past, and now Hezbollah fighters, all of whom endanger its security. At least publically, Israel never asks why there is such long lasting hostility toward it. And, if their leaders do so in private, it never impacts policy. Instead, Israel has consistently waged war on its neighbors to stop the vengeful incursions of those whose land Israel has…what? Gotten from God? Conquered from the Canaanites? Confiscated after chasing out Arab forces who identified them as European interlopers? Stolen?

Saturday: 7 Iraqis Killed, 15 Wounded

At least seven Iraqis were killed and 15 more were wounded almost entirely in Baghdad.

In Baghdad, gunmen killed two policemen at a checkpoint in New Baghdad then set cars on fire, injuring two more people. A half hour later gunmen in Shabb killed a Sahwa fighter and injured two more at another checkpoint. At nearly the same time, gunmen killed two more policemen and wounded two bystanders in Amil, where a separate bomb wounded six people. At least one other policeman was shot dead. In Jihad, a roadside bomb wounded three people. Diyala police raided a house and arrested as suspected assassin.

The Ground Zero Mosque Lies

Posted: 14 Aug 2010 06:50 AM PDT

There never were plans for a mosque at “ground zero.” The entire story is made up by a public relations agency working with the Israeli government and the GOP. There are plans for an Islamic center in an old Burlington Coat Factory store blocks away. That far down the island of Manhattan, a couple blocks away is “across town.” The idea that Israel is financing the “Ground Zero Mosque” controversy when Mossad agents were arrested, dancing in the streets on 9/11, is an obscenity.

Michael Moore Defends the “Professional Left” Against Obama and the Banksters

Posted: 14 Aug 2010 04:28 AM PDT

Following Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs’ ungracious comments about the “professional left,” the usual suspects mounted the corporate media and began venting about the Obama administration.

One such luminary was filmmaker Michael Moore. Mike told Keith Olbermann at MSNBC that the so-called left wants to seize the banks and throw out the bums but the Obama administration simply will not listen. Mike’s naiveté — more likely his mendacity, since he did not roll off the turnip truck last week — will undoubtedly stir the righteous indignation of so-called progressives. In fact, it is designed to do so.

Change that's Not: 'Obama on Bush route'

Posted: 14 Aug 2010 04:16 AM PDT

Recent sanctions against Iran are an attempt by the US to return the country to its sphere of influence, claims veteran journalist John Pilger. "Iran was a pillar of the American empire in the Middle East. That was swept away in 1979 by the Islamic revolution, and it has been American foreign policy to get that back," he said. "It has absolutely nothing to do with so-called nuclear weapons. The nuclear power in the Middle East is the fourth biggest military power in the world and that is Israel. It has something like 500 or more nuclear warheads. It is never discussed." Pilger added that Barack Obama has failed to change the trajectory of US foreign policy and following George W. Bush's line. "For the first time in US presidential history -- it has not happened before -- a president has taken the entire defense department bureaucracy, and the Secretary of State for Defense, from a previous discredited administration. We have basically Robert Gates and the same generals running American foreign policy with a lot of help from people of like mind."

Desperate Establishment’s Latest Rand Paul Hoax Backfires

Posted: 14 Aug 2010 03:46 AM PDT

The latest media hoax targeting Kentucky primary winner Rand Paul has exploded in the establishment’s face after a claim that Paul “kidnapped” a woman during a college prank was revealed to be completely mischaracterized, showing once again how desperate the system is to discredit Paul and prevent him from leading a populist revolt against the status quo.

The corporate media has now launched no less than three hyped or outright manufactured “controversies” in an effort to tear down Paul’s popularity in the less than three months since he won the Kentucky primary. The system is scared stiff of what Paul represents because he is a true constitutionalist with a real chance of winning in October after having brushed aside establishment Republican candidate Trey Grayson back in May.

Hidden Intelligence Operation Behind the Wikileaks Release of “Secret” Documents?

Posted: 14 Aug 2010 02:30 AM PDT

Since the dramatic release of a US military film of a US airborne shooting of unarmed journalists in Iraq, Wiki-Leaks has gained global notoreity and credibility as a daring website that releases sensitive material to the public from whistleblowers within various governments. Their latest “coup” involved alleged leak of thousands of pages of supposedly sensitive documents regarding US informers within the Taliban in Afghanistan and their ties to senior people linked to Pakistan’s ISI military intelligence. The evidence suggests however that far from an honest leak, it is a calculated disinformation to the gain of the US and perhaps Israeli and Indian intelligence and a coverup of the US and Western role in drug trafficking out of Afghanistan.

Peace Process Or Real Peace?

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 11:49 PM PDT

Direct talks between Palestinian and Israeli leaders are the most obvious way to achieve peace in the Middle East conflict. But history has shown time and again that a high-profile peace process alone is no recipe for success.

The Arab League is set to meet later this month to advise the Palestinian leadership whether or not to engage in direct talks with Israel. Palestinian officials say that there is no use in holding direct talks that are nothing more than a photo opportunity intended to create the impression of a peace process while avoiding any substantive commitments.

Iran Betrayed!

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 11:48 PM PDT

Recently, I returned from a 10-day trip to Iran that was primarily a touristic visit for me and my wife. However, I did talk to friends and others whose political views reflected both sides of the government-opposition divide. I sought firsthand appreciation of Iran that went beyond the American- and Israeli-influenced Western media’s heavy focus on Iran as an irresponsible international menace. I suspected that beneath the story of a nuclear standoff with the West was a deeper tale of a nation, a culture, history, identity and human values that could only be appreciated on the spot.

The Jewish Response

There were two groups of Jewish attendees at the 219th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in Minneapolis early this month. One was composed of several members of Jewish Voice for Peace, Jeff Halper of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, and me.

We were there at the invitation of the denomination’s Israel Palestine Mission Network to support passage of the Middle East Study Committee Report, “Breaking Down the Walls” and other Middle East-related overtures, including divestment from Caterpillar, recognition that Israel’s policies constitute Apartheid, and endorsement of the Palestine Kairos document.

Deep in Debt: Paying the Hard Way

Money, money, money... We need it every day and couldn't imagine our life without it. If you haven't got enough, you could borrow some in a bank - it's easy. One has to remember, though, that one day you must pay back that loan... Yet some people can't. What happens to those who don't pay the bills?

Prayer hall or provocation?

Barack Obama, the US president, spoke forcefully on Friday night in support of the proposed mosque and Islamic community centre near the site of the former World Trade Centre in New York that was destroyed in the September 11 attacks.

The project is popularly called the "Ground Zero mosque", perhaps a slight misnomer on two counts.

From Goldstone to Uribe

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 09:58 PM PDT

steve lendman Despite a credible start, the fix is in. Expect justice again to be denied. After the Gaza War (Operation Cast Lead), the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) appointed Justice Richard Goldstone to lead an independent four-person fact-finding Commission to investigate human rights and humanitarian law violations committed on both sides, Israel doing everything possible to obstruct him in vain.

The Commission conducted 188 interviews, got over 300 reports, submissions and other documents, comprising more than 10,000 pages, 30 videos, and 1,200 photographs, much of it gathered first-hand. Secondary sources added corroboration, in total providing clear evidence of Israel crimes.

Irish artists make BDS history, issuing the first nation-wide ‘pledge’ to boycott Israeli apartheid

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 09:11 PM PDT

The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) strongly welcomes the Irish artists’ ‘pledge’ to boycott Israeli cultural institutions until Israel complies with international law. This pledge not only represents a significant victory for the ethical responsibilities of international cultural figures; a key factor in the cultural boycott of Israel, but is a ground breaking strategy in supporting Palestinian struggle for freedom and justice.

Afghanistan prepares for Bagram 2.0

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 08:14 PM PDT

In the summer of 2009, an extraordinary meeting took place in Kabul, the Afghan capital. On one side of the room sat Anthony Lieto, a retired American army colonel who had helped to oversee sweeping reforms in US detention policy in Iraq. Opposite him were two senior figures from the former Taliban government, both of whom had spent years as prisoners in US custody.

One was Abdul Salam Zaeef, the Taliban's last official envoy to Pakistan, who had been imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay for four years after the US-led invasion of Afghanistan.

Israeli Generals and Intel Officials Oppose Attack on Iran

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 06:00 PM PDT

Gareth Porter

Pro-Israeli journalist Jeffrey Goldberg’s article in The Atlantic magazine was evidently aimed at showing why the Barack Obama administration should worry that it risks an attack by the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Iran in the coming months unless it takes a much more menacing line toward Iran’s nuclear program.

But the article provides new evidence that senior figures in the Israeli intelligence and military leadership oppose such a strike against Iran and believe that Netanyahu’s apocalyptic rhetoric about an Iranian nuclear threat as an "existential threat" is unnecessary and self-defeating.

Igniting Armageddon in The Middle East

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 05:22 PM PDT

Aggressive rhetoric and a push for Israel to attack Iran have been, lately, intensified in the American media. While senators are trying to get President Obama to officially support an Israeli attack on Iran, reporters of the main media are trying to convince the average American that Iran’s (non-existent) nuclear weapons program, half the globe away, is a threat to America, and the only viable way to stop Iran is through an Israeli “preventive” attack. They claim that the consequences of such an attack, warned by some military strategists as devastating, are “overblown”.

Are US-Israel Intelligence Agencies Blocking Palestinian Civil Rights to Weaken Hezbollah?

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 05:07 PM PDT

The State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research (NIR) is part of the U.S. Intelligence Community’s panoply of 16 agencies, which comprise the US Intelligence Community (IC). According to Congressional sources consulted below, NIR and Israel have been working longer hours than most members of Lebanon’s Parliament, carefully analyzing the language of the main draft proposals concerning elementary civil rights for Palestinian Refugees. The proposals are currently scheduled for an August 17, 2010 Parliamentary vote and the US-Israel plan is to allow nothing to be enacted into law that would actually benefit Lebanon’s Palestinian refugees.

The Rise of Palestine's Tourism Sector

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 11:29 PM PDT

USAID is responsible for being the number one provider of monetary funds to Israel. It funds Israel over ten billion dollars a year and a third of that money goes into funding it with arms and all types of weapons.

The long 18 meter wall that separates Israeli territory from Palestinian territory was built with money that came from USAID. The catch 22 here is that USAID also gives money to the Palestinian Authority although not nearly as much; more than three quarters less.
